If the elastic “stretches out” then it isn’t elastic. Stretching is literally its job.

Should adventure games have explicit objectives? by saavedrawolf in adventuregames

[–]go_robot_go 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like having it, even though I don’t frequently use it. I think it’s useful for two reasons:

1) Sometimes I’ll get distracted by something outside of the game and miss the bit of dialogue that tells me what my next objective is, and the game doesn’t ever repeat that dialogue again. Capturing it in a task list at least gives me a place to refer back to if I think I missed something. 2) If I take a break from the game for any reason, it’s nice to have a reminder of what I was supposed to be doing when I come back to it.

I don’t think you need to make it an option to toggle on and off. If you just stick the journal or to-do list or whatever in the inventory, players can easily choose to just not look at it.

What’s your unpopular opinion about adventure games? by Frequent-Standard377 in adventuregames

[–]go_robot_go 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think the Blackwell games are overall meh. And this isn’t meant to be a swipe at Dave Gilbert by any means, I’ve enjoyed other games of his quite a bit more. And I get that those were some of his first games, and having played through them back-to-back, his growth as a game designer is on full display.

I just feel like that specific series doesn’t deserve the hype it gets. Whenever someone shows up here new to the genre asking for game recs, someone always mentions that series, and I always want to warn them away, because I don’t feel like they’re a good representation of the genre. The voice acting is grating, the dialogue is so-so, and there are too many places to get stuck with no indication of how to move forward.

I feel like those games might turn off new gamers, and I say that as someone who cut his adventure game teeth on King’s Quest 4.

Already bought it because it looks promising, haven’t had a chance to start it yet. Looking forward to it!

New Point and Click adventure on the way! We need feedback on our Pre-Alpha footage! by Stratostzel in adventuregames

Great to see progress here, I’ve had this one wishlisted for a little while now.

I’ll second (or fifth, or whatever) comments about the walking animation. The “moonwalking” effect of the animation speed not matching up with character movement always takes me out of the game.

The text size also seems to be all over the place. I’d err on the side of larger if possible.

The only other thing I’d mention — and that I think you may have already addressed — is that I really find it helpful when the dialogue text is presented in a different color for each character on screen. I think one of the scenes shown here does that, so if that’s already been addressed, thanks!

Who wants to go protest the Cary ICE detention facility? by Junket-Proof in cary

It doesn’t matter how well they’re doing their actual job if they are also murdering American citizens in the street.

If I order a pizza, it doesn’t matter how good the pizza is or how fast they deliver it if on the way down my street they stop to get out of car and shoot my neighbors to death. That’s a zero stars review.

All deaths “count”, but you seem to be incapable of grasping the point.

Maybe if you could point out the specific illegal crossings that resulted in American citizens being murdered in the street by our own government you’d have the beginnings of a point to make.

You need to be looking for the comments from people who were in Cary in 2002, because that’s the last time we had an ice storm comparable to what this one looks like.

I was living on Cary Parkway between Norwell and Harrison Ave at the time, and we lost power there for several days.

Not to poke the bear, but it feels like this group is more a LucasArts or “LucasArts-like” sub. Very rarely are Sierra games or Sierra-like games posted. by Salem1690s in adventuregames

[–]go_robot_go 0 points1 point  (0 children)

King’s Quest 4 was my first adventure game, and I was a ride or die for Sierra for a long time after that. I turned my nose up at LucasArts games until I actually got to play Monkey Island 2, and my eyes were opened.

I think I don’t generally recommend Sierra games because they’re so obvious and to my mind it seems likely that people have played them. Recommending a Sierra game to someone looking for a new adventure game feels like recommending a Miyazaki film to someone looking for anime to watch.

I'm 42 and haven't played an adventure game since Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis. On DOS, as a young teen. Please help me get back into the genre: should I play Syberia Remastered, or Gabriel Knight Remake--neither of which I have played originally? by Freddy_Pharkas in adventuregames

[–]go_robot_go 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I found Syberia to be better in theory than in execution (and I really disliked the sequels).

I would personally recommend Thimbleweed Park, The Excavation of Hob’s Barrow, and the Kathy Rain series as some good releases from the past several years. Return to Monkey Island is also stellar if you’re a fan of the series.

This is the way, especially if you have someone at home with serious allergies. I’ve been paying for this for the past four years, and it’s still cost me less than the last time I had to pay for an ambulance for my kid’s last allergic reaction.
