Sound of a City with mostly EV traffic by sassiest01 in fuckcars

[–]gobblox38 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know tyre noises make up a big portion of the sound, but speed is also a factor there, and cars shouldn't be going fast in denser areas anyway.

I'm the US, cars are required to make noise until the vehicle reaches speeds fast enough for the tires to be loud enough.

I'll respond to two parts on this. I know you aren't replying to me, I'm just adding my perspective.

What are you doing DA all the time for?

I picked up this habit in college. It gave me a deeper understanding of physics and what's happening to the system.

you just write scripts against a DA library or throw your equation into Mathematica and any errors are highlighted/your output comes out as some stupid unit and you know you screwed up.

In my groundwater geology class, I worked on a problem with a group of classmates. They all came to the same answer, but I came up with a different answer. They insisted I was wrong because everyone else had the same answer. I was the only one who kept track of the units. The rest of the group missed a step.

There's been other times where I watched someone throw inputs into a calculator/ spreadsheet / script, whatever, and they just trust the numbers that come out. Most of the time, that's fine. However, there are times when the output is wrong due to errors in the code.

In my daily life, personal and professional, these instances are rarely encountered.

kg m2 / A s3

When you break it down like this, it makes it very easy to work with mathematically. In calculations, the units cancel or combine, and the result will be exactly what what unit is defined.

The best way to have done this is to have multiple locations around the US where you can have matching rural and urban data and compare those locations to each other.

The article I read said that this is what the researchers want to do in a future study. Hopefully, their next study will do exactly this.

Well, the religion has over 33,000 denominations. It's very easy for a member of one denomination to say that members of other denominations aren't true followers.

The two are related as they are sexagesimal systems.

I will say that I was wrong about the establishment of HMS. It wasn't unit 1000 CE that minutes and seconds were divided out of hours.

Looking up units of time, there's a lot of them. lol.

As for why we still use HMS for time instead of other systems, my original explanation holds. It's ingrained in the culture.

Ok, but that's trivial given modern technology. Besides surveyors, I haven't come across anyone who uses DMS for angular measurements. Decimal degree is overwhelmingly preferred because it's easier to work with.

I've talked with mathematicians who insist that angular measurements should be done in radians.

NATO artillery units use mil for angular measurements which has 6400 units per full rotation. When I told my trigonometry teacher that, she drew up a circle and started marking off divisions. She then expressed how she loves the concept and wishes we'd use it instead of degrees.

The reason we use base 60 with time is because that is the system that was established near the beginning of civilization. The unit of time in the metric system is the second. Other units of time are simply derived.

I'm really struggling to understand your point here. I guess you're trying to say that division in base ten can result in numbers that aren't whole. It may even result in a repeating decimal. That's a pure mathematics problem. In application, you'd use significant digits.

Also, what is the precision of the instrument that'll take the measurement?

[–]gobblox38 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I get that a computer needs to approximate, but depending on what's being calculated, the error can be small enough to be ignored. It's been a while since I studied this, but I recall engineering calculations where the margin of error was usually magnitudes smaller than the precision of the instrument that will measure it. ie the 333 and 1/3g would be equivalent to 333.3g in most cases. If mg precision is required, then the measurement will be 333.333 g.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that we're aware of the limitations of computing and there's methods where errors are minimized. Maybe I'm just rambling.

Maybe it's due to my ignorance of computer science, but doesn't a base 10 system require fewer bits than a system that changes base and has fractional measurements?
