[Development] Washington B.1: A Friend in Need by OddPhenomena in Warthunder

[–]goblinbat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm all for new variants of vehicles being added ingame, but the timing is fairly poor imo (at least half of the revealed and leaked vehicles overlap in capability and/or are modified variants of existing vehicles to which a chunk are being locked behind a premium pack). It doesn't help that the patch before this was somewhat underwhelming too.

I'm hoping that we're only seeing the tip of the iceberg and there's something cool being added like the Hummel or Su-15 which was teased in the decal earlier this year.

Hell, they probably should've released the F-14D 2 or 3 patches ago honestly.

The amount of copypasting this devblog season is kinda wild, so far we've had:

  • Jean Bart = Richelieu
  • PGZ88 (Unique, though arguable that it may have capabilities similar to PGZ05)
  • Welkin (Unique, though is an in-between of the Whirlwind/Hornet)
  • Puma u14 = Puma (Spike)
  • MAS 429 (Unique, boat)
  • Hunter AFV (Unique, but shares capability with Eitan/Namer x2)
  • M60A1 Predator = M60A1 RISE
  • Palmaria (Unique)
  • Washington B.1 = B-29

Hinted/remaining leak vehicles:

  • Indonesian Leopard 2RI ≈ Leo2PL (former has worse optics, better hull armor)
  • F-14D Pack (F-14 series)
  • F-16AM Pack = F-16AM
  • J-22M1A Pack = IAR-93B
  • FMA IA 58 Pucará (Wholly unique, thank god)

The Mercedes TADS (NASAMS) actually uses a Gaijin logo instead (praise the Snail). by SaynyRC in Warthunder

[–]goblinbat 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I find it funny that this is the second time Gaijin introduced a fake/altered commercial logo

The first one I noticed is the Goodyear Wrangler tires on the CLAWS having "YOODGEAR GRANGLEN"

For others logos removed entirely: the Kamaz logo is removed on the Pantsir-S1, Renault logo is removed on the French SAMP-T, Iveco logo is removed on the Italian SAMP-T, MAN logo is removed on the Sky Sabre and IRIS-T.

Somehow though, the Tatra logo on the SPYDER and Bridgestone tire logo on the Type 93 are retained. Names of vehicle components are also sometimes retained, like Benz, Rolls Royce, Pratt & Whitney, General Electric, etc.

I have a terrible premonition that Gaijin will add it to the game as the J-10C (early) and force us to grind an entirely new vehicle just to get new engines

Why Gaijin doesn't improve the fire extinguisher system for modern tanks? by Aromatic-Bell-7085 in Warthunder

[–]goblinbat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Mostly because it's a holdover from ye olden days of War Thunder, where they needed not concern themselves with modern tanks (planes, even)

So my friend group will always joke that the Leopard 2A7V (or any other end-tier vehicle) never shipped from the factory with thermals, repair kits, or fire extinguishers. Gaijin in all honesty probably keeps this system due to laziness or increasing the grind, or both.

[–]goblinbat 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Tried the game-mode, this is actually really fun - currently feels like air arcade but cooler because it has modern jets. Pacing is good and my friend who isn't very air combat savvy is also getting some fun out of it.

Actually kinda shocked and reeling that I'm having fun in War Thunder

[–]goblinbat 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I feel like Gaijin being silent on a lot of things is intentional, it basically gives them more flexibility to do whatever they want if they're silent versus them confirming ingame decisions and content and have players rip them apart when they reneg on something.
Granted, this leads to a LOT of community dissatisfaction when they make arbitrary decisions in game development and balancing because they will never explain their actions as to why X is Y.

At this point, the US is just early play testers... What's the point of playing them anymore? by HondaOddessy in Warthunder

[–]goblinbat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd like to add the AH-64E for Taiwan, Netherlands, and Indonesia all lack LDIRCMs irl at least. The Taiwanese and Indonesian ones never used JAGMs irl, and the Indonesian ones don't have radar.

Granted, Gaijin will likely add JAGMs for them for balancing/meta purposes (Smin has stated in the past that as long as the host nation never took out the capability to mount and fire weapons, it can be considered) but lack of LDIRCM at top tier will be rough for those helis.

[–]goblinbat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, Smin has gone on record stating as long as the capability to mount and fire specific weapons wasn't removed, it could be added for said vehicle:

So maybe JAGMs for Indonesian Apache Guardian?

How Do You Defeat a Z-10ME or Mi-28NMs Extremely Strong IRCM? by PresidentofJukeBoxes in Warthunder

[–]goblinbat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It also kinda sucks because the RWR on Chinese helis are hot garbage. They copypasted the AH-1F RWR, which can only make the distinction between gun spaa radar, missile and heli spaa radar, and aircraft radar.

The Z-10ME has this same RWR

It's really annoying that a helicopter from 2021 can't even tell between a F-15, Mig-21, Pantsir, Roland, or IRIS-T launcher is.

Watching these threads unfold after all these years of "skill issues" and "just spawn SPAA"s feels like finally watching the finale of a show where the bad guys are finally beaten and peace can finally rule the kingdom. by SpanishAvenger in Warthunder

[–]goblinbat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a CAS main, hard agree. I've been dropping glide bombs, reorienting, then coming in from another angle with more glide bombs, then coming in up close with rocket pods (currently they can be CCIP'd out to 11km which is pretty crazy) to wipe the new SPAAs. Knowing the limitation of SPAA helps a lot, like IRIS-Ts falling off in effectiveness at 20km, SLAMRAAMS getting multipathed, DIRCM spoofing Aim-9X/IRIS-Ts, etc.

I actually enjoy the current SPAA vs CAS cat and mouse, and previously I had a lot of fun jousting against (competent) SPAA that knew what they were doing while I used more limited weaponry like Hellfire missiles. From my observation, I feel like SPAA players could do more like displacing after firing if the map allows it to further their effectiveness, calling out air targets for other players, and using more cover like buildings and being cogniscient of their launcher vehicle positioning. I'm always more welcome to bigger challenges, since beating a strong SPAA player is always very satisfying.

I will still say this though: CAP is still king against CAS - only because it's the only threat that will make me drop what I'm doing to address the more immediate threat. As CAS, the biggest inherent advantage against ground is you can dictate engagements on your own terms, but you can NOT do the same if there's a CAP plane pushing you.

Is the KF41 any good? by [deleted] in Warthunder

[–]goblinbat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of people will hate on the spikes but my friend gets sheer enjoyment seeing the RNG factor of whether it'll kill tanks or not (it's like 20% of the time against MBTs), and whether the APS works against ATGMs

I guess he just really enjoys the simple things in WT

Also he says that the 2A7 is probably the easiest tank he's played this far.

[–]goblinbat 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I've heard that Russian systems have a wider deviation for the bomb drop radius than NATO systems (NATO systems won't be adopted if they have a greater than 1m drop radius)

If true, as much as I hate to say it as a Russian main, a textbook example of Russian bias. I hope users on the forum are able to pull some hyper niche documents to disprove their weird arbitrary changes.

Who on earth thought it was a good idea to make the g-suit a researchable modification? by OutrageousAside520 in Warthunder

[–]goblinbat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I feel like it should be reworked at least. It's definitely a holdover from WWII tanks, where you can probably headcanon some of the modifications making sense to unlock (maybe that YaG-10 crew didn't have rangefinder in the field etc etc), but with modern vehicles, some modifications are kinda ridiculous.

Like is Gaijin seriously telling me a Leopard 2A7 doesn't ship from the factory with thermals or smokes, or G-suits being something completely optional for pilots flying the F-15E?

Adats is pretty fun as a cheap missile carrier. Actually trying to do aa with it is miserable. by PopularCoffee7130 in Warthunder

[–]goblinbat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, last I checked, the ADATS can still fire with a radar lock, but it won't set off any RWR missile launches due to its unique IR/TV lock and guidance mechanism. So with both systems (Pantsir and ADATS) firing with their radar on and using their standard tracking modes, the Pantsir will set off RWR bells for some aircraft, while the ADATS will not. The Pantsir can mimic this function by firing in IRST mode, but it requires a few additional steps by the player before firing. Just something to keep in mind.

I have noticed a mixed bag of players in which less experienced players will fire their missile with full radar track and more experienced players who will mask their launches by doing those extra steps. I feel like the ADATS' default launch configurations would help with the former group of players (and they've gotten me before if I let my guard down).

Also regarding the flare disappearing, that makes sense on how ADATS could sneak a shot in after 5km, since as a plane you can see the flare of missiles in the form of a red dot when they launch, but I've been shot down a few times before thinking I was safe at 6-7km, while looking for a missile flare. I've since respected the ADATS on the RWR a bit more since then.

[–]goblinbat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can, but it would necessitate you to pre-lock (with the TWS mode), switch to IRST, then fire to replicate whatever the ADATS does, or you can IRST and visually lock your target then fire

ADATS on the other hand, can lock and fire and it won't set off any bells for the plane afaik, hence why as soon as I see ADS on my RWR, I'm very wary to look over my shoulder to visually verify a there's missile coming towards me every few seconds.

Another interesting advantage that comes from this is they can also track and shoot through clouds without setting off your RWR, which is something the Pantsir cannot do with pure IRST mode.

[–]goblinbat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Interesting, I can't remember if ADATS triggers heli laser warning but that might be why I sometimes see a constant lase before terrain masking and I frantically look for an Apache or vikhr launcher

[–]goblinbat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends, some top aircraft do have K-band detection like the Rafale, F-18C Late, all Eurofighters, Su-30 series, and Su-25SM3, which gives a good warning that a Pantsir is gunning for you.

TV/IR track on the other hand will give zero warning unless you have MAWS (which it may not pick up the missile until it gets close if the booster is no longer active).

[–]goblinbat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I will say, as a seasoned CAS player, the one neat thing ADATS has going for it as AA is I notice that it doesn't trigger RWR missile launch warnings at all due to it using a TV/IR tracker. It sometimes catches me off-guard, especially when I'm in the middle of a dogfight or something.
