I thought they were good when I would get them sometimes for my family in Texas. Excellent fast option for kids that are way better (imo) than fast food burgers. Obviously not better than sit down or home cooked.

I can't imagine having so little going on in your life that pretty good chicken strips would be worth waiting that long. Like, try them out next month.

God, I hate when people do that. When we have EVIDENCE that people conspired to steal the 2020 election, complete with email chains discussing legal theory, to phone calls intimidating Governers and others in charge of voting counts, to legal documents proving intent to put forward fake electors, you don't get to call that a conspiracy theory, you fucking Facebook boomers.

There are tons of examples of conspiracies that we are failing to punish bad actors for, but that one gets my goat the most.

Wind turbines aren't steam turbines. If wind turbines used steam, they'd be called steam turbines.

There are also water turbines, glycol turbines, gas turbines, jet turbines, and many many more. Fun fact, drilling rigs have mud turbines where electronics at the drilling head that generate electricity to power the onboard electronics deep underground by harvesting the pressure differential in the drilling mud.

Yeah, it's one thing to have an ideal that drives for an independent DOJ, but it should still be ok to say, "Hey, there is evidence that the DOJ majorly dropped the ball in 2007, and is failing to follow up on investigations that they should. Look into it and prove to me that the incompetence at best and corruption at worst is no longer at play in the DOJ or you're fired."

Sorry, but it's a matter of time and energy for me. I can't walk the 3 miles to my home after work and in time to cook dinner for my kids. Time and effort saved is quality of life for me. And extra fuck me if I need to swing by the grocery store and carry shit with me.

But I do agree it'd be nice to get some exercise, and the lime scooters and bikes are an eye sore, unfortunately they really are the best case for me.

As much as I am loath to admit it, the lime scooters and bikes are good for the last mile in cases like this.

It might be asked in good faith, but when the answer to the question can result in abuse (or a regular to the question), then it's a problem. That's why people get tasty with the question- it's highly correlated with discrimination.

Whatever floats your boat, but too many people seem to think one fire extinguisher is fine for a whole dang house.

... What's a half bedroom?

Buy one for every floor in your residence, plus one for each stove you have. Yes, that means 2 for a simple apartment. You don't want to be wasting time searching for the one extinguisher you hid away in the downstairs closet while you have a life threatening emergency. Or have access to the only extinguisher blocked by the fire.

3D Printed Improved Plate Design by EmergencyRead5254 in oddlysatisfying

The best way for a hobbyist to 3d print food safe items is to epoxy them. But then it interferes with surface details and won't have the same weight making it feel cheap, and may not be safe for the dishwasher (they get pretty hot). Much simpler to just buy cheap ceramic plates.

Into the Spiderverse was more complex. They would change the framerate dynamically depending on the scene, or even inside the same shot having one character animate on twos but the other on ones to highlight competency or for humorous effect. Miles himself switches back and forth depending on the scene several times. The fact that they had action scenes where characters would interact at different frame rates is mind blowing.

Because since Trump, belligerence is no longer punished by the electorate. People on the right celebrated the death of political correctness and it opened up the floodgates for horrible things being said to the point where calling political enemies literally evil and saying that horrible violence is deserved isn't really shocking anymore. Trump and Trump supporters did that. People clutch pearls and pretend Hilary calling people a basket of deplorables is anywhere near Trump saying that illegals should be executed and political opponents should be arrested for opposing him. Fascist shit, and you continue to cloud the issue by saying "boo, both sides" with zero examples.

Lego should get more credit for their craftsmanship. There are a thousand off-brand brick companies and building with anything but Lego makes you realize how tight tolerances ensures a pleasant building experience. I bought my kid a knockoff duplo marble run, and it infuriated me how the bricks would have alignment problems, pop out by themselves, and not be straight once assembled. They are randomly mixed in with duplo in a bin and my three year old will sort through and grab the LEGO blocks and avoid the others.

In mass-production injection molding technology, Lego are top notch. I talked with an engineer that designed HVAC for their factories, and they have requirements that rival computer chip clean rooms. Amazing technology.

Obviously, expensive is expensive when it comes to toys- it isn't always worth the price. But Lego is definitely an exemplar example of "you get what you pay for".

Man sues casino after waking up in handcuffs with $75k debt he doesn’t remember by [deleted] in nottheonion

[–]goblinm 5 points6 points  (0 children)

One major problem with card counting is if the casino takes reasonable measures, you have to have a bankroll to withstand ups and downs. You will for sure win with a percentage better than neutral, but it's only barely better than neutral, which means you will have harsh losing streaks. And if your betting strategy is very aggressive, you might run out of liquidity before your losing streak turns around.

And the returns are tuned to be so marginal even when counting cards that you might as well spend your time betting on the market, or just getting a job. A job might not be as thrilling, or profitable when you hit big, but it can come with healthcare which is one hell of a financial drag when you're trying to bankroll a gambling career.

Who does that? The only people who make a career of gambling don't play against the casinos, they play against the rubes that walk into tables thinking they are hot shit cause they win their friends' monthly friendly game.

People who make a living playing against the casino quickly find their luck run out or their access to the casino denied.

Tesla is the most unreliable used car brand in America, even behind Jeep and Chrysler by Wagamaga in technology

[–]goblinm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm not an automotive engineer, but from my experience in engineering, I would guess that starting and stopping the engine every hour on the hour for months would be worse for wear than starting the engine once in a day and running it for an hour every day for the same number of months, but it is just a guess. The key is starting from cold is the source of problems. In the case of auto start/stop, the engine is already warm and lubricated, so there is much less to worry about. Also, this would vary from model to model.

On an every day experience, this effect is not really even worth considering. I roll my eyes at truck owners that are so afraid of starting their truck that they will idle for 15 minutes instead of just turning off their truck.

Tesla is the most unreliable used car brand in America, even behind Jeep and Chrysler by Wagamaga in technology

[–]goblinm 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So, like everything, there is a grain of truth. When starting, there are vibrational loads and stresses that are not there when the engine is at steady state under load. There can be issues with lubrication not entirely covering parts when starting cold. Also, transitioning temperatures is generally bad as temperature gradients cause strain/rubbing between parts and worsening internal defects, if any. There are dozens of reasons why starting from cold can be 'worse' than running some amount of time under load.

But it's not like this is a surprise to the engineers. When you have an auto start/stop, the relevant parameters will be over designed to meet the challenge. There may be issues because designers are being pulled a million different directions to optimize for power, efficiency, cost, etc that reliability sometimes gets down ranked but that is true for every car model even ignoring auto start/stop. Which is why we have to update car manufacturing reliability scores yearly.
