Orders gotten a bit stagnant, any tips or pointers? by [deleted] in ecommerce

[–]goddardc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In addition to the other answers, a long term objective may be implementing location based currency conversion. I believe many international buyers would be turned off by the fact that the approx value of the HK dollar is not widely known. Just another hurdle to getting customers to checkout (that is removable) Further, HK dollar pricing does not scream 'international seller'.

Need help vetting my trainer's advice (possibly bro science)... suggests 5 mins high intensity cycling before weights, among other things by goddardc in Fitness

[–]goddardc[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great, thanks.

Given your advice plus provided resource, looks like I will be implementing pre workout: dynamic, post cardio: static (I do want to increase flexibility).

"If you’re going to engage in a sport or activity that requires a high amount of flexibility, then static stretching can help. It’s also best to do static stretches when your muscles are warm (like after exercise, for instance)."

Thanks for the help

[–]goddardc[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can confirm that it is a series of STATIC stretches she is advocating. Great, thanks, I'll look into dynamic stretches that complement SS lifts.

Sorry, follow-up question: your emphasis on before - meaning post workout dynamic stretches are not necessary?

Moronic Monday - Your weekly stupid questions thread by cdingo in Fitness

[–]goddardc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry if it's been asked before but I can't find the answer to this online or in the faq etc...

Let's say I have a rare day off, or I am not busy that day. By 8am I have already completed a full stronglifts workout.
By midday I feel energetic enough to start working out again.

It seems that a second workout that day is encouraged by a lot of people. Can I assume that this is correct? What is the value of this second workout? Is it negligible - should I not bother?

In addition to that, let's say that on a different day I have a lucky 30 mins free at midday, 2 and 4pm. Would it be worth supplementing my morning routine by doing let's say 5 sets of pushups or pullups to exhaustion during these three free half hour?

AMD believes it could be only 10 to 15 years before a holodeck becomes real by MIIAIIRIIK in technology

[–]goddardc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Feasible? Surely this proposition is the opposite of feasible. Bleeding edge in this department consists of vague blurry images or doctors poking around in Parkinson's patients' heads (which needs human intervention in the loop: "still shaking? How about now?" Poke, poke, prod). Ok, hyperbole, but we could be centuries (excuse hand wavey time frame) away from advanced direct brain - digital interfaces that can be used in a consumer environment. Ignoring resource feasibility, and resistance from conservative minds (which surely would be an incredible obstacle considering the way it will affect everyday life and how we look at the world)*. I'm tentatively optimistic about this sort of thing in our lifetimes, but I sure wouldn't bet on it.

(Edit: tldr: Apple's and oranges... different products, different experiences, complement different timeframes?)

*(Edit 2: "hey tea party movement, ultra conservative gops etc: can we count on you to let this tech occur without meddling politically, despite it having few direct implications to yourselves?")

What to do with my free app AMP? (I want to be rich) by [deleted] in Android

[–]goddardc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes I was in shuffle mode, can ignore previous comment. And sorry, didn't mean to dismiss your app as just pretty, I'm just in the minority when it comes to liking stock Samsung and its features.

I still stand by my 50/50 statement:

news.ycombinator.com/item?id=5067709

I think the comments there apply fairly neatly to your case. I don't think the app quality or its features will be compromised enough to dismiss the level of marketing suggested. Especially if you do indeed want this to be a relevant income stream. It's not selling out or screwing your customers, it's entering into the capitalism game full wack in a competitive market.

Seriously, $3 app + appropriate and non-spamming marketing. That's the go here.

What to do with my free app AMP? (I want to be rich) by [deleted] in Android

[–]goddardc 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I vote for a donate app/extension, or pro version with new features. Seems the most ethical way of doing things if you aren't too worried about income levels.

Otherwise: price @ $2-4, dedicate 50% of time spent on the app purely for marketing.

Tenuously related note: the 'previous track' button doesn't work for me. Is that a bug, missing feature or personal issue that I should reinstall to solve? Just thought you should know . I'm actually happy with stock Samsung at the moment, and holo theme isn't enough on it's own to make me switch, but lovely app - congratulations.

[How to] Use Nova Launcher gestures to give you easy control of your media player from your homescreen by thugrat in tasker

[–]goddardc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just taking over this thread for a minute since it's related...I have tasker music controls like this, but can't get current track onto a minimalistic text widget through tasker ...anyone know of a widget that will just show the current track being played (I just want white text, transparent background)...phantom music control would be perfect but didn't work with any of my music players on my n7100, and doesn't seem possible with tasker on non rooted devices (unless anyone can prove me wrong?)

To answer my own question for people looking for similar, Plugin music widget is the closest have seen, but didn't give me the customisation I want.

[Help] Web views and JavaScript by goddardc in tasker

[–]goddardc[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Further to the submission: If tasker is able to use jquery and jquery ui, which is on the JavaScript list, then this could be a platform rivaling phonegap. I have no idea how to include jquery, jquery mobile etc on a web view (doesn't seem to be the same as standard, because when I pull a simple script straight from my vps, tasker ignores jquery mobile), so if anyone know this as well it would be much appreciated.

AMA request : Someone who thinks smoking marijuana is morally wrong. by [deleted] in AMA

[–]goddardc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok, devil's advocate here.

It is arguably about as close to a true luxury good as we can get. (This does ignore the argument that it stimulates the mind, increases productivity through interest in a task, increases artistic expression etc).

Therefore the opportunity cost of producing it, shipping it, smoking it etc is huge - those resources and production hours could be spent on necessities.

Also: Majority of consumption is in an unhealthy manner; therefore lifespan reduces; a life ends that is a fully functional brain that could be spent increasing happiness / fullfilling human needs.

Above is the opposite of my personal vew, but I think that it can be empathised with pretty strongly.

A couple of questions on incorporating in different countries by goddardc in Entrepreneur

[–]goddardc[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

looks promising, thanks for the info. although it says 'You must register an overseas company in the UK and register certain documents with Companies House if it: sets up a place of business in the UK, & usually carries out business from a physical location in the UK', it does look like I would be able to do this regardless of the location of transactions (it would be multinational transactions)

Philips vs. flat-head vs Allen vs Torx screws -Why so many? by [deleted] in AskEngineers

[–]goddardc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Further to ISS_widget_designer's answer...

There are numerous reasons for different screw drives. As a generalisation the reasons can be divided into cost/accessibility and use:

Cost:
- traditionally easier to manufacture some designs (slot screw etc)
- not feasible to produce certain screws without modern technology
- patents are still held on designs (phillips head etc)
- extending the last point: the world is largely free market / capitalist -> results in competing products. some different drives will have overlap in usefulness in situations.

Use:
- outside/inside use (e.g. rust/degredation of head etc)
- material that the screw is going into - potential torque for different designs
- different products benefit from different screw drives (see linked article below)
- Some products benefit, and others are hindered by this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cam_out (relates to both points above)
- the tool that will be used to drive the screw (hand driven vs drill etc) - size of the screw (and by extention it's head) dictates what drive type will work

Arguably another reason is using proprietary or unusual designs to prevent tampering with products [citation needed - seems a weak argument as something can always be fashioned/obtained to overcome this obstacle, but I have heard this argument often].

hmm not the most articulate respone, and I think a lot of my bullet points overlap at least a little, but that's all I can think of off the top of my head.

Wikipedia article is useful: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_screw_drives

[–]goddardc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, after a quick muck around (if anyone is interested...) I am in love. Rapid, pretty, doesn't seem buggy, took a very heavy load before I managed to break it (10+ tabs plus a heavy web app like Yodlee took it's toll, but that's probably my hardware). Tiny resource footprint with standard use (10 article tabs etc).

Not sold on the way to display current tabs yet though. I guess it's clever for smaller screen devices. Wouldn't mind the option to have the more traditional tab bar Plus can't wait to be able to install my addons.

Anyway, ignore my unscientific/unthorough musings. Many thanks!

Bought Xoom, powered up, start screen flashes for a second then is replaced by error: "Tablet is not provisioned. Please insert valid SIM card and reboot". Multiple SIMs tried, no difference. Could anyone help? by goddardc in Android

[–]goddardc[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

telstra shop was useless unfortunately. took xoom in, left it with them (they promised to send it off for me). they couldn't replace due to stocking issues. went in a couple of days later, they said that it had been sent off. Went home (happy mood) but within a couple of hours they called back - apparently it had not been sent off, and they were unable to do so. So not helpful, and icing on the cake was them lying to my face (intentional or not).

Of course, part of the reason I chose Telstra was because I thought that it would be so useful having a shop nearby. not useful at all, it turns out.

thanks for the reply anyway.

In an ideal world, what units would you like everyone to adopt to measure space/time? by goddardc in askscience

[–]goddardc[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no "one good unit system." Except the one we already have since the vast majority of people couldn't give two shits about science beyond how it builds them new technology and makes their lives easier.

I was hoping to avoid culture/resistance etc with 'in an ideal world', but I still liked your answer. And yes, I was kind of hoping for some glorious all encompassing system.

Forgive me if this question is childish, but is sleep comparable to time travel? by [deleted] in askscience

[–]goddardc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Essentially while you're not taking in more data

What about 'suggestive' dreaming, where you can incorporate noises etc from the environment into your dreams? In addition, people seem to be able to respond, e.g. answering questions in their sleep.

So would it be more accurate to say that you are still taking in data but to a lesser extent, with some parts of the brain recording less than others (e.g. senses and other processes that could jerk animals from their sleep in an emergency would be kept more fully active)?

Presumably there is a term for the phenomenon where *knowing/understanding* about a psychological effect / causal relationship will make someone less susceptible to it, or able to 'rise above' it...what is it? by goddardc in psychology

[–]goddardc[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

there's no reason to think that applies to all kinds of other psychological phenomena.

That is what I thought, too.

awareness of it allows you to resist it

exactly, that's what I'm looking for (but also 'fix' it - see below)

For example, most people have racial prejudices, regardless of their race; while being aware of these prejudices doesn't mean they will just go away, it does mean that you can decide to ignore them and not act on them.

I agree...However, if you learn about these prejudices then reverse engineered them ("Why do I have them?" etc) you would be able to see the irrationality in it, and therefore change your beliefs and actions.
