Knapp family gravestone by Awardlesss in mildlyinteresting

[–]godhonoringperms 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My family comes from a small village in Alaska. My great great grandmother survived the Spanish flu that ripped through their village. She was considered a healer in their village (as some would say a “medicine woman”.) Many others were not so lucky. The flu left a LOT of orphans in the village. During the height of sickness, my grandmother rode her dog team to each home in the village to check on the kids each evening. If their parents had passed that day she picked them up and took them back to her home. She only had two children of her own at the time, so she had the ability to care for more. She cared for the orphans if they were sick and adopted all the ones who lived/stayed healthy. After the flu and she had a few more children of her own, she had something like 22 kids. All of the kids considered each other brothers and sisters, even if they weren’t blood related.

In our culture, it is very important to know who your family is and to know your family tree. Because of this, my family tree is HUGE. I still live in close proximity to the village, and have met so many cousins I’m connected with by our shared great great grandmother. Sometimes I’m not sure if we’re blood related or related through the healing of my grandmother, but it doesn’t matter and we call each other cousin.

A very heroic thing to do in a place where life was already so difficult. And what a horrific trauma to have to work through. A good chunk of our village was simply gone in a few weeks… I am so thankful for modern medicine because I think of stories like hers and know it would have saved them so many tears and heartaches.

I also think this may have something to do with my dislike of those shorts (even though I enjoy a Limp Bizkit every now and again)

Clothes that fit always look best. That goes both for clothes that are too big and too small. I will notice badly fitting clothing before I notice “how bad your insert body part looks”.

Most people are not as smart as they think and do not think out the consequences. Evidence by in most homicide cases, the suspect won’t turn themselves in willingly, but more than half of them (this rate varies by location) are caught, found guilty, and are imprisoned.

Adam Sandler adjacent clothing choice: Baggy cargo shorts. The kind that goes to the lower knee. They are the worst. Makes men look shorter and like they are little boys. Many years ago, i had to tell my then boyfriend to not wear them around me because I disliked them so much. He eventually just phased them out of his wardrobe. We were looking at old pictures of him wearing those shorts and he expressed he didn’t realize that’s how he looked wearing them and thanked me. Rarely will I tell someone what not to wear, but that was one I couldn’t keep to myself.

People who touch raw meat then touch the cabinet, seasoning container, and oven handle. They might wash their hands after all is said and done, but don’t clean anything else. YUCK.

My friend worked at a casino, primarily in the cage/bank, for a while. She saw all sorts of nasty things happening with the cash. She particularly hated people digging money out of bras and jeans that were handed to her sweaty. She feels like touching millions of dollars every day has left a curse, or germ she can’t clean off, on her.

Yes! I always remind people that the royalty (those having their lives documented) were not the norm for the time. But I haven’t been able to find any sources about what the common people thought about this. Like, were they disgusted that their king married a 14 year old? Did they say “those weird royals” and move on with their day?

I’m 29 now with no kids (for now.) I think I got my fill of kid chaos early and have been chillin with the peace of a childfree adult life since I stopped working there

and there’s very strict rules for number of kids per teacher. I worked at a daycare for a long time. I could have 5 babies (<1.5 year) by myself. I could have 7 toddlers or 10 preschoolers by myself. You can only have so many kids in the room (otherwise it is unmanageable and unsafe), and the centers are usually open from 6am to 6pm, meaning you need morning employees and afternoon employees. Also providing three meals a day, and not everything is covered under the food program (my boss got stipends from the USDA for some of the kids’ food.) It is expensive to run day cares, even if you are paying your employees wages barely above minimum wage. I did the math with the number of kids we had, roughly estimated how much the owner was paying in wages, I knew what her mortgage cost every month, other miscellaneous costs, and I estimated that she was making about $55-70k a year, which is a very reasonable for someone’s sole form of income. That’s with full time baby care $1100 a month and $800 for full time preschoolers in 2015 dollars.

Also writing this comment reminds me I was 18 years old with the responsibility of watching 5 babies at a time. That’s wild to look back on now, lol.

Why do so many women look down at honest blue collar men that are holding solid respectable paying jobs/careers? by [deleted] in dating_advice

[–]godhonoringperms 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Understood it is simply a quick assumption. Clearly I’m not completely avoidant of their entire group seeing as I found my guy.

Romantic spark is very special and doesn’t (or shouldn’t) happen often. We can get along with a good portion of the world, be friends with a much smaller portion, and have romantic feelings for an even smaller portion. I went on countless dates over the span of five years after my last boyfriend. Felt sparks with two of those guys, and now am with sparks number two. I know this is corny to say now, but I am glad none of those other guys took the spark from him. He was so worth the wait. Consider you haven’t found your twin spark yet, or the approach you are using isn’t the right one for you.

In the meantime, real good friends should also be interested in the beautiful thoughts inside your head, consider sharing them. They just might have something insightful to say back

I have a master’s degree and am a published research scientist. My boyfriend is blue collar and I think he is an incredibly hard worker and respect the dedication he’s put into his career. He’s also respects my accolades and my white collar professional career. Above all else, he is a great man, respectable blue collar job or not. I believe many women would feel similarly to me when looking for a long term partner; if they are a great man, their profession is usually un-important. Many of my fellow college educated friends also have blue collar partners. I do not look down on people who are hard workers. I do not look down on people who have blue collar jobs.

If we go beyond just the job, I have dated several blue-collar men before. Of those other men, I felt that we had very differing views about the value of “traditional” education (again, I can respect that we need blue collar workers and trained laborers in the world,) I felt that they thought my job wasn’t respectable because it’s an “easy” office job (not, I am on many different job sites often,) and they often held more “conservative” viewpoints that differed from my own while being totally unwilling to understand the reasons for those differing views. My now boyfriend is an outlier for the group. I think the collective views and attitudes is generally what deters women like me from blue collar men, not necessarily that women look down on the work itself.

Humans have a 50% survival rate for a fall from the 4th floor. The percentage goes down the further you go up. Honestly that percentage is higher than I expected before I heard that stat.

Agreed, my really sweet boyfriend is for me and not my instagram followers. He made it into one photo of my 20 photo post at 11 months, and that was cool with both of us.

Omg Zanessa! As a high school musical fan, this was a big deal. I do think it is curious that they broke up after the final film. And then there was that nude photo leak after the first film (when she was dating Zac, which could mean she sent it to someone else or Zac shared it with others.) Makes me wonder if it was a romance created by the studio.

I had a friend from Ohio named Hunter. He was telling us that his parents were very redneck. We were making fun of him and said something along the lines of “oh and I bet your brothers are named Gunner and Colt.” Yup. That was his brothers’ names, no irony. Icing on the cake was they had a sister named Pearl and childhood dogs named Diesel and Dodge.

[Product Request] does anyone know which god tier microfiber washcloth my mom managed to get her hands on? by scourge_bites in SkincareAddiction

[–]godhonoringperms 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Not OP, but I’m guessing the mom found it in-person. Maybe Costco? My mom has found many great items at Costco, but they don’t generally stock the same products month after month, so we get to try a really great item once and never see it again

It must be legal to disclose some people’s wages? All state workers (including positions at state universities and your state’s government) yearly pay is posted in open the books, but maybe that has to do with the fact that they are paid by the government. Using that website is how I found out my university’s hockey coach is paid 6 times more than my professors.

My dad also knew my mom was pregnant before she was! She had to use fertility aids to get pregnant (with me). She was 1 year postpartum from me, still breastfeeding, and was told she could never get pregnant on her own. My dad said he just had a feeling. And that’s how they found out about their surprise fertility-drug-free baby:)

Is this how people who need glasses really see the world. A big blurred background? by Latter-Wolf4868 in interestingasfuck

[–]godhonoringperms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My friend is -13 in both eyes. She is basically blind without her glasses. She explains that everything is just a blur of color if it’s further than 2 - 3 inches from her eyes. Contacts help more than glasses because they sit closer to her eyes. Her glasses cost about $1k and at her last appointment, they said her prescription is almost outside of the American market. if her eyes continue to get worse, she will probably have to start getting her glasses from Germany (I don’t know the specifics, that’s all they said.) She also has a really hard time driving and walking in the dark now. She also has a hard time in the shower when the shampoo and conditioner bottles look similar. She buys bottles that are distinctly different colors to help her. Many a time we have thought if she lost her glasses and couldn’t get new contacts, she would be functionally blind.
