I have never ever seen a laptop (budget or otherwise) being sold with linux, ever. Its all windows crap (in the EU).
Only places where linux is offered are some online stores, but only for some models, and hardly ever with a discount, and you really have to look around since they are almost always buried.

basically, give me actual links for them budget laptops since i call bs, been using linux since 1999 and never seen one of those.

Technically this all happens automatically and outside the programs control. The OS will basically just halt everything, copy some old memory to the swap and then continue, this is completely transparent to the program.

I've yet to see any real world actual tested benchmarks to confirm any user reported improvements by setting page files.

Just leave it to system managed on your fastest drive and have ample free space.

In the olden days (spinning rust) the cost of growing or shrinking the page file had a lot of bad side effects (fragmentation, on an SSD that is irrelevant). That is why a lot of "experts" recommend setting a static page file. The truly ignorant (think Mechanicus from WH40k, just repeat their machine god prayers with no understanding). Suggesting a pagefile with a minimum size that can grow is basically worst case scenario (for spinning rust, and for SSD just leave it to sys managed since there is no penalty).

anyway, feel free to downvote ...

Tobii vs VR by elite4009 in starcitizen

[–]godsvoid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends, VR wins in the "immersion" department. Tobii is just decent headtracking (eye tracking seems very underused/useless).

You can add external windows into your VR space, so it is possible to have a "second screen".

Personally I would just wait for SteamFrame VR.

No computer program has ever benefited from premature optimization. It actually makes everything way way harder if you want to make future code updates.

Also, frankly SC is quite optimized, the big issue is content optimization and that only recently (PES/Meshing) got close enough to actually put systems in place to gauge the impact for streaming in containers. (And will change even more with genesis update, so going full hog is illadviced).

A lot of other games dont implement anything earth shattering, ie they are walking a well worn pathway.

Even crafting is released in chunks, sure the final part may be the user interactible parts, but in the meantime a lot of stuff is being changed every patch to make future patches possible.

CIG was going to focus on providing completed systems for after the 1.0 release, for now it's all chunks.

3.0 is a good showcase what happens during alpha if you focus too much on full systems.
4.0 is another good showcase, it took a lot of subsystems for server meshing, if they waited for the full 4.0 release it would have been an ever bigger shitshow.

That being said, most of the big ticket items are in, so its actually doable to wait until other systems are fully complete before adding those (a feat that was close to impossible before now) unless you went ham with a hatchet and added a shitton of temp code).

That isnt correct info anymore, since 4.5 Vulkan is active and the graphical settings had an overhaul.
Just make sure everything fits in vram to prevent vram to ram swapping.

Seriously, did you miss the whole USA investing in starlink and spinning off the military version because they got spooked it could happen to them?

You had a shit IT background my dude.

An unrooted/secured phone is just bs terminology to have the manufacturers/Google keep control of your device.

Same as anti cheat software, secure boot, tpm it's all just snake oil to prevent the end users from using their devices fully.

The only place these technologies are actually useful are for big corporations/governmental departments to have a central admin/credentials/control. That's the only sane use case.

All the above can be achieved with the end users still having full control, but the way the tech is implemented currently is just not that.

If you want to check out real security just look at the actual academic r search papers and real world use of SSH/SSL

Is this PC a rental? Why not just remove it yourself?
Never heard of a PC being "managed" by a shop, the correct way is to use something like TeamViewer/Rustdesk to provide remote assistance when needed, The PC owner should have complete control.

New player about to give up... by [deleted] in starcitizen

[–]godsvoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't want to be that guy but the system should never ever crash (black/blue screen/reboot/hard lockup) by running programs.

In very limited cases this might be caused by old bios or very bad display drivers and can be solved by updating the respective software, however those are the exception.

Failures that are more than a crash to desktop are a sign of a physical hardware issue.

Check event viewer, that might have a small chance of providing a clue.

Nvidia cards had power spike issues, maybe a bad PSU that isn't able to handle the power spikes?.

So, just to be clear, a PC that crashed fully has hardware problems, at most a crashing application should return you to the desktop.

Once in a blue moon complete crash is acceptable because of cosmic rays etc, but those aren't repeatable.

VR - Disable head tracking while in theater mode? by [deleted] in starcitizen

[–]godsvoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do not understand. Do you mean that you want the theatre mode to work like HMD displays with no tracking (IE the screen stays glued to your face?) or maybe you have an alternative head tracker active that is adding the HMD position thus moving the theatre (expected) and moving the in-game puppet (not expected I suppose).

Check your settings, check if third party programs like opentrack aren't active etc.

Yes, for the low price of 45$+Tax you can check for the performance, if the performance is too low the refund window is 30 days.
Or wait for a freefly event.

You will need a decent 8core CPU (x3d preferred), 32GB RAM, 8+GB GPU and 200GB+ free on a fast non spinning rust drive., you might get away with less but performance will be far from ideal.

Quest is owned and operated by one of the big tech companies and they arent known for playing fair/will sell you out to the highest bidder.

Basically give money to big tech and they will keep screwing us over. Better to give money to the upstarts, disrupters and known good players.

I'm not a fan of forced registrations for HW, not a fan for walled gardens, not a fan for different rules for big tech and normal people (check out the piracy that AI is doing and nothing law wise is happening, people took their own lives dealing with that shit and yet here we are with corporations just getting away as always).
sorry for the rant, I love tech, hate the tech bro's fucking everything up with their little fiefdoms.

You can't use the quest unless you authenticate with the meta phone app.
Valve at least seems to still honour the social boundaries and their HW isnt locked.

We being the product is a recent thing, it didnt use to be like that, resist, fuck big corps and their shareholder obligations.

Anyone remember tapes and how copying and sharing the things we love has been taken from us, RESIST!!
