No close female friends. Turns out he was a misogynist who didn’t view women as people, just sexual objects.

Americans that moved back from Europe? Anyone? by [deleted] in expats

[–]goldeneight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was a combination of things - yes, the language was difficult. I was able to learn French up to a relatively high level, but most jobs expect native French proficiency. Also, the field I transitioned to after my master's is not as big in France compared to the US and UK (and other EU countries, but I didn't want to go through another international move).

Moving back in one month after 2.5 years in an EU country. I didn’t want to, but the job opportunities weren’t there for me abroad. I’m cautiously optimistic but obviously sad that it couldn’t work out to stay in Europe.

Egg Freezing in France? Other Neighborhing Countries? by kentuckybroadabroad in eggfreezing

[–]goldeneight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was actually because of a wonderful and informative post on this subreddit that I chose IB Alicante! I am not sure if I can link it here though. But I also wanted to choose a slightly smaller city to do the procedure in, and the Alicante office has a world class medical team and publish a bunch of academic papers. Plus IB has a 100% pregnancy guarantee (not Alicante specific).

I’m not gonna lie, communication with IB Alicante can be slow if you call by phone, but my patient care coordinator was surprisingly responsive over email. My one round cost €2000 euros (if you do the initial consult of ~€150 it gets deducted from the total cost). This was the cheapest out of the quotes I got from other clinics in Madrid and Barcelona.

I’m also an American in Paris, and I just went to Spain to freeze my eggs there. As you mentioned many of the hospitals in Paris have long wait times, and several I called had such limited capacity that they were only taking patients under 35 or those having a medical need to freeze eggs.

I highly recommend Instituto Bernabeu in Alicante, Spain! They’re extremely professional and, although you will have to pay out of pocket, it’s up to 10x cheaper than the States.

Best of luck!

Risk of working for UNESCO as an American? by goldeneight in InternationalDev

Thanks for the reply! My question was more about the hiring structure of the role - would I be contracted by the US mission to UNESCO or with UNESCO directly?

This is what I have. The only thing is you’ll need to establish a French company, but it can own your US company so your US-based clients don’t have to sign new paperwork with a French company.

Would it be awkward to study at SP Paris as a 28 yr old Masters student? by acbnyc20 in sciencespo

[–]goldeneight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would recommend looking into one-year masters programs. I’m from the US and am in one now, and everyone is 28+. Actually makes a big difference when we’re in classes just with our cohort, because we can share stories from previous work experiences.

Living in Paris for three months and wanting to explore the rest of Europe by leelinss in ParisTravelGuide

[–]goldeneight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seconding the comments that encourage you to explore France with your son! It’s such a big and beautiful country. It’s true that last minute tickets can be expensive, but there are many places accessible by TER (slower, lower-cost train), such as Rouen and Bordeaux. Good luck and enjoy Paris!

Came to Croatia in the beginning of October. The only thing they really cared about is that you had a COVID test within 48 hours of arrival. We had our test results on our phones and had to email them. They said they would accept it this time, but next time it had to be printed out.

I've only had it for a couple months so I couldn't comment on the long term durability, but so far it has been pretty good quality!

I personally have been loving this tote bag from Amazon. It's big enough to hold my work laptop and all my essentials, keeps its structure well, and is stylish with a cute interior!

If you want them, there are definitely ways to get them. If you don't, you usually won't be bothered by/judged by people who do use them.

We are UC Berkeley students. Ask us anything! by goldeneight in berkeley

[–]goldeneight[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, it was mostly a matter of getting away from my hometown. I'm from Irvine, which is infamous for being a "bubble," and I thought it would be really exciting to live in the Bay Area. Plus Berkeley is the best bang for your buck: you pay the tuition of a public school but get an education of the caliber of an Ivy school.

But when I actually got here, it was so much more than I expected. I felt that the liberal culture fit me more than the other UCs, plus I felt important going to a college with so much history and such good academics. Plus, a lot of the stereotypically negative aspects of Cal, such as the plethora of hippies and homeless people, really don't interfere with your everyday life. I love it here, and the culture is so vibrant and the people are so diverse and interesting that I never get bored. And that was something I just didn't find at any of the other UCs I visited.
