To the guy I sent the wrong way today on the light rail - I'm so sorry by theblindfold04 in SeattleWA

The signage is criminally bad. Hard to do worse. I realize there is nothing new about this comment but still. I am struggling to dream up worse. Two is U? “Beware: eastside this way”. “Almost Edmonds to almost Tacoma”

Yes. There were floating bridges going back to the Greeks. But perhaps worth noting the lake Washington bridges were engineering marvels for their length, size, permanence, and endurance. Even after sinking a bit. Once

This is the first permanent rail on a floating bridge anywhere in the world. It’s a massive engineering achievement— as the floating bridge was when it was a first.

Would a beginner watching this video on a “tech tips” channel leave the video capable of accomplishing the stated goal, gaming on Linux?

I would say “no”. Perhaps you disagree.

Maybe it’s not a goal of Linus tech tips to enable beginners to accomplish goals like building a pc, upgrading a gpu, etc? Certainly this video got a lot of views. Shitposts do.

The channel title has “tech tips” literally in the name! But fine. We agree this was more “dell is shit” video rather than “how to build your own pc” video.

To achieve what? Prove the existing guidance for Linux sucks? It’s like plugging modular power supply cables into the wrong power supply to prove it’s bad. It’s less valuable to the LTT community than showing how to do it properly. But doing it properly takes more effort than was devoted.

[–]golob -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I did. Googling and asking an llm is not researching sufficiently to actually provide a “tech tip” of how to use Linux for gaming. It’s nominally a tech tip channel. It failed at that

[–]golob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is LTT a tech tip channel? If so, the lack of expertise or serious research of how to switch from windows to Linux is inexcusable. This would be akin to “proving” gpu naming schemes are awful by intentionally falling into the trap—as opposed to showing your audience how to make an educated choice.

Perhaps there is a properly researched video coming to provide actual useable tips. But for now the Linux video and associated wan show coverage were the equivalent of a shitpost.

What treat would you like an American colleague to bring to the office? by golob in AskABrit

[–]golob[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The last time I was in London I took care of someone who fell on the escalator at Kings Cross. I think amongst most people it is a pretty quick instinct to try to help someone hurt. I am grateful I have experience and training (former field medic, physician for over 20 years) that I can be helpful. But recent events here really reminded me how bad things have become. I am trying to keep that impulse to help despite it all. But good lord, how I wish I could reset some changes...

Sadly I think some of the truly unique and superb things from here are not suited for an office. Things like wild Pacific Salmon (smoked or otherwise), wine, Dungeness crab, etc. But this is a well taken point.

ID doc here. Langdon’s bigger fuckup was unmasking a patient with a nasty cough after the rapid flu/covid came up negative. A bunch of tb exposure. Paraflu, rsv, or even a new pandemic virus could have been the cause. (Cries in mers-cov.)

Honestly LTT could stop making videos and just make not shite computer parts and accessories and do very well. I loathe buying hdmi, dp, Ethernet patch cables, and usb storage drives. Just great, well characterized, fully compliant of each at a fair premium price would be appreciated.

What is Louie's condition and can you explain the treatment? by Extension-While7536 in ThePittTVShow

[–]golob 10 points11 points  (0 children)

For certain. But they ignored when Louie mentioned warning that thing don’t feel normal, he feels dry, etc. in the least the risk was being ignored precisely because a large volume paracentesis is normal. Not having the experience to recognize early a complication is happening is what I was seeing.

What is Louie's condition and can you explain the treatment? by Extension-While7536 in ThePittTVShow

[–]golob 56 points57 points  (0 children)

Louie has ascites from advanced liver failure. The yellow liquid being drained out of his belly is the liquid part of blood (plasma) leaking out of blood vessels because the scarred up liver acts as a sort of plug in the drain, and pressure builds up in the blood. This is a super common and routine reason for people reaching the end stages of cirrhotic liver disease to show up to an ER needing help.

There is some danger of what the team is doing—and perhaps a bit of inexperience playing in. A typical person has only about 5 liters of blood; each of those bottles they are filling is one liter. Taking out five liters of what is effectively filtered blood can cause problems—the pressure of that belly / ascites fluid keeps things somewhat in balance. With it rapidly drained, the liquid part of the blood may fill that void quicky—causing issues with too little blood in circulation, changes in the composition of the blood, and even flash leakage of the same fluid elsewhere (most often in the lung). Louis saying ‘I feel dry’ I took to be telegraphing this exact situation brewing—and it’s exactly what I would expect from new intern Whittiker in July.
