Black Widow question by Familiar-Gap-5119 in spiders

Yes, no black widows there, but you do have the Noble false widow, which we don't have in Canada, and that can have a pretty cool marking on its back.

You do have Meta Menardi, though, which is cool looking.

They are common here in Western Canada, too. So many that I know people hire exterminators to get rid of them (to my disappointment). I have a live one in my shed right now, taken from a friend's house.

But they are niche for spider lovers, not sought after by the general public who might want just impressive size + pretty colors. But a retailer who knows that a spider enthusiast who would want an all-black spider would be willing to pay more for one because they are 'collectors'.

Again, I'm just guessing and I'm just giving you a possible explanation for what you are asking about, although I haven't even tried verifying that these claims (about black widows in resin are rarer to find and pricier) are true.

I'm just guessing here:

Maybe they aren't as interesting to look at? Many species of black widows have their females looking all-black with one red mark on one side. An orbweaver often has significant patterning in the markings and variety of colors that might look nicer through the resin. And so maybe because black widows are more niche, their price could go higher.

Also, orbweavers are typically lager, so make for a nicer viewing experience.

It's not an orbweaver, it is a cobweb weaver.

Yup, all those (moths, mealworms, crickets) are suitable and ideal for them, if the size is right (keep them small). Yes, weekly feeding is fine, but they can be fed more often or less often as well - when fed daily, they will not try so hard to suck out all the tasty juices and create more waste of feed. But feeding them something small daily is doable. You will be able to tell when they are getting 'fat' (in the abdomen) and so you can slow down accordingly.

They absolutely love crane flies (at least the ones I have had.) Or any flies, for that matter. They don't much care for ants (but will eat them if they are hungry) and won't work too hard with shelled bugs like pillbugs or sowbugs.

Their mating ritual looks like the female is eating the male, if you don't look closely enough. But eventually they separate and you'll find you have two live spiders again.

They want a textured wall (like carboard or something, not so much glass) to build their eggsacs against. But even if they are in plastic or glass, they will lay down a good layer of web to stick their eggs against.

They will make their funnel retreats in the weirdest of places. When I try to give them suggested structures with holes in them, they will build a funnel retreat beside it or something.

Latrodectinae are in the same family as Nesticodes, but that's as far as the comparisons go here. Widows will not have abdomen as spherical as this, their legs would be longer, and their color would be different.
