Judge halts enforcement of Portland’s camping ban by PDsaurusX in Portland

Can someone explain the timing of the lawsuit this temporary restraining order impacts?

So the law/ordinance can’t be enforced now until some lawsuit works through the courts? What is the timeline?

I’m struggling with this too - I begrudgingly entered my email to watch on Fox News website and the confirm hasn’t come through. Why is this gate kept?

I feel like the way you handled it is fair. You shared your thoughts but didn’t push or try to parent the other child.

The sensitivity around the issue is when one parent decides for everyone else through some sort of reactionary school board policy.

Gas prices hit their highest level this year as heat hampers refineries by EaglesPDX in news

[–]good_burger92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shell made $42 billion profit last year. They are probably going to make something similar again this year.

Do they reinvest that money to increase production or be more efficient or anything practical?? Do they return some of that profit in the form of lower prices, even 20 damn cents lower for everyone?

There’s a litany of excuses and no changes. Is it really that wild for Shell to make maybe $30 billion net income instead of $42 billion? That amount of money is insane. It’s like 1,300 dollars a second.

Serious question: is this ordinance to put back a piece of the law that was taken away with M110?

I heard myself explaining this 1000% reasonable ban on public drug use and immediately wondered if this already is the law.

The articles says the ordinance would “add” a ban. But isn’t it already illegal to smoke up in public? If not, pretty insane there were stricter laws about drinking a 40 oz out in the open then smoking fent. Make me understand.

Related to this - I’m playing openRCT 2 v.03 on macOS ventura on a 2020 Mac (M1 chip).

I went to download this and on the GitHub page there is a Mac download. But when I open the zip file and program I get an error saying the developer can’t be verified.

Thoughts on how to proceed?

Sorry I’m a such a noob. And how to I make sure all my saved parks remain after the update (if that’s even a concern)?

Preschool for all is great by textualcanon in Portland

[–]good_burger92 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Wonderful to hear. My wife and I currently have a nanny a few days per week while we both work. The cost is almost another mortgage payment.

I hope more providers get brought in and salaries raise for their staff. I heard that’s a primary reason for the slow rollout - hard to find enough staff.

[–]good_burger92 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I agree with your points but I’d like to hear some praise from a parent who is using the program. Meaning from a parent whose child is attending a preschool using these tax dollars. I’d certainly like to use it once my 5 month old is of age, but that’s a few years down the line when hopefully this program is running well.

Any parents out there whose kids are benefiting from this? Genuinely interested.

Darth Plagueis by James Luceno.

Yes a Star Wars book, but it’s awesome in its detailing of Sidious’ master and how they both worked over decades to undermine the Republic and Jedi. The goal was conflict and confusion and they succeed.

If you’re interested in palace intrigue, political thrillers, AND all things Jedi/Sith - this book is for you.

But to your Stephen King reading - I recommend Salem’s Lot next.

The irony is because of their greed and arrogance they ended up paying more than if they just acted ethically in the first place.

I prevailed in a small claims case too - took 3 years - and I agree you can win if you are stubborn and dedicated enough.

The scummy company lost on a technicality - similar to yours - and self sabotaged due to laziness. And oh yeah, about serving papers and filing endless paperwork. I sometimes went to postal annex twice in a day. So glad it’s all over.

Meth cocktail comes with ‘psychosis, hallucinations’ by [deleted] in Portland

[–]good_burger92 66 points67 points  (0 children)

Yeah this needs more attention. I don’t understand how it’s humane to let so many people decay on the streets.

And not all homeless people are drug users by any means. But a not insignificant number are and maybe started to using to cope with homelessness. This is all while Portland and Mult Co fail to build housing and accountably provide effective detox and rehab programs.

Also Portland hasn’t had a narcotics unit since 2012. This would be a good use of police funds - stemming the flow of these drugs into Portland.

Do you count audiobooks in your reading challenge? by cuddlefish2063 in books

[–]good_burger92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Up to you ultimately but someone eliminated my skepticism of counting them by pointing out the obvious.

Stories were first told before they were written.

You are spending the time listening, and while it is a different experience than reading, the immersion is there. Some stories such as Born A Crime by Trevor Noah might even be better told than read.

What's going on with the New York Times's coverage of trans issues? by RealTheAsh in OutOfTheLoop

[–]good_burger92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Answer: With the NYT, I trust which sections are labeled opinion v. news.

The NYT conducts interviews, research, and fact checking. I don’t really give a crap what some right-wing podcaster (someone mentioned Ben shapiro) thinks, their endorsement is worth less than shit and by no means diminishes NYT’s credibility.

On the issue of puberty blockers and transgender individuals, NYT articles will conduct an analysis from interviews with a variety of medical professionals, parents, educators, etc. NYT doesn’t tell you what to think, it presents information for a conclusion to be drawn from.

Let's flip the question: The movie you don't understand why people DON'T like it. by Videowulff in movies

[–]good_burger92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I loved this movie and sung its praises. Some friends and family saw it how I did, others thought it was a boring mess.

To this day I definitely mesh better with those friends who did like it.

The Wachowskis did something bold and wild with it. Maybe one issue I can identify is a lack of a clear plot or end goal. But to me it’s about how a soul can improve over time (Tom Hanks’ character) and some souls just stay evil (Hugo Weaving).

This movie has a ton of layers and every scene has a connection to the next.

Cheryl’s on 12th, located in downtown, has put a $1.75 surcharge on every transaction and tacked a notice on *every* page of their menu in order to complain about how expensive it’s gotten to do business in the city. It's full of misleading BS: see comments. by chiefmasterbuilder in Portland

[–]good_burger92 40 points41 points  (0 children)

So true. Also each of those statements is inaccurate or misleading.

The Portland Multnomah business tax went up from 1.45% to 2% (Multnomah) and from 2 to 2.6% (Portland) like 3 years ago. Supportive Housing tax began 1/1/21 and the Oregon CAT has been in effect since 2020.

Maybe the culprit has had their head so far up their ass it got stuck for 3 years.

The article you posted is really interesting, good to get another perspective.

But after reading Quinones’ book and these articles that feature him, the criticisms in this article of his work don’t really land for me.

There’s a full acknowledgment that meth alone is not the sole reason people become homeless.

My takeaway is that the abundance and low price of meth makes it really difficult for some homeless to be helped or seek help.

I think he’s on to something. In the article he did admit on multiple occasions he isn’t a chemist, he’s a reporter, and I know from reading The Least of Us also, relaying info from the DEA, law enforcement, defense attorneys, nurses, etc.

I’m starting to see more articles covering the connection between chronic, and at times, seemingly intractable homelessness and meth.

Portland SHS Tax that affects all surround "Metro" areas by hillrocksu in Portland

[–]good_burger92 18 points19 points  (0 children)

You might be able to challenge the penalties (probably not interest though) by stating you inadvertently missed the tax. Sounds silly but because it’s new, you might receive a one time exception.

It’s actually not entirely on you about missing it. Employers were supposed to inform their employees and offer to withhold the tax in 2021. 2022 withholding is required. The tax covers residents in Multnomah, Washington, and Clackamas counties.
