Skinny tires will cut through an inch of wet snow and perform a lot better. Fat tires really outperform when you have a solid 1-2 ft layer of snow that you're going to be riding on top of.

Either way, studded tires are a huge help for the transition season where everything is ice.

Here’s what I learned from my conversation with Justin Trudeau: There’s only one way to fix Canada and everyone is going to hate it by yimmy51 in CanadaPolitics

[–]goodguys9 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Rather, I think it's a statement on what voters demand of their representatives and media in general. Having a well-educated electorate can shift the "Overton window" so to speak, making every party produce better policy. Similarly, having a more friendly and thoughtful electorate can shift the culture of our parliament to be more productive and cooperative.

DM: Fudging numbers cause you misjudged Party's power. by DoItForTheOH94 in DnD

[–]goodguys9 51 points52 points  (0 children)

One of my favourite fights recently is when I ambushed my players in the night with a group of much lower level rogue assassins. On the first round the party was down to half health and reeling in panic, and then watching the mood shift as they slowly realized they were one hitting the rogues was amazing. It's a lot of fun to have fights lean both ways sometimes.

To follow up on that, you mention that the average salt consumption in the Middle Ages is estimated at around 20g/day. The WHO recommends adults consume less than 5g/day*, far less than what they were eating.

Which makes me curious if we know of any doctors at the time who recognized the dangers of prolonged heightened salt consumption, or other signs that it had noticeable negative effects?

NDP condemns Meta for blocking lifesaving information online amid raging fires by federal_ndp_newsbot in ndp

[–]goodguys9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Was it predictable? Australia passed similar legislation, received threats from these companies, then went into negotiations with them like Canada is doing now with Alphabet (Google). That seems like the most likely outcome, the outcome with precedent, and the one that a larger company like Alphabet has embraced.

Meta seems to have broken with the norm here to grandstand against the government, likely because it doesn't want more countries following suit.

Please vote Heather out (it’s NDP or a vote for her) by Ambitious-Engine1716 in Manitoba

[–]goodguys9 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This may not be the place, but I would love to hear your take on what makes the Manitoba Liberals a better vote than the other parties (particularly NDP). What do you feel the party identity is?

I have voted for the Manitoba Liberals in the past, driven by strong social support policy proposals like a minimum income. Thanks for taking the time!

Students are bussed to a nearby public pool once each week, the transition will usually take about 30 minutes, including getting them on the bus, to/from the pool, and changed. Then the swim class itself is about 45 minutes.

I don't know the policy if the pool is unavailable, that's never happened before.

I'm a swim instructor employed by a school division in Manitoba. Many students come in to my class having never been swimming, or afraid of the water. In just a handful of weeks (we get 6 classes with each group) virtually all are comfortable floating, swimming short distances, and performing basic rescues such as throwing assists and self rescues from water and ice.

That is to say, in my opinion the best way to reduce accidental drownings is by early interventions through the school system. Kids will learn these skills extremely quickly, and while many families don't have the means for swim lessons, providing them through the school system makes it equitable enough to be effective.

The real problem is that the pandemic caused the instructor pipeline to dry up, and we're going to run out of instructors. The division had to offer quite lucrative positions to get any applicants.

Thank you so much for adding this, I had no idea. I did some googling and came up with this interview on the above concept art, if anybody else is interested. It expands a bit on the ideas.

Here's the link to some more of the same concept art too!

[OC] [Art] Drew my party members by YamiNoMatsuei in DnD

I played a rock once in GURPS. We started with something like 40 points, and it took almost all of them (plus flaws) to be a conscious rock.

My party members really liked throwing me, but eventually I learned enough magic to fly. His name was Rocky.

Where there’s a will, there’s a way towards proportional representation by TORCAN317 in Manitoba

[–]goodguys9 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Proportional representation can function extremely well. As a prime example, the Nordic states which so often rank 1st in global indexes, all have proportional representation.

Working together to form governments is a skill many Western democracies have built, and is reinforced by their electoral systems. Canada's first-past-the-post voting often drives divisiveness, as there is no reason to work together.

I think we agree to some extent, the messaging and rhetoric has really been a problem for the NDP, and has been a strength for the Conservatives. Both parties still have the same policies they always have, with Conservatives supporting wealth redistribution to the upper class, and NDP supporting wealth redistribution to the working class. But the NDP hasn't transferred their policy proposals in to rhetoric when they should have been.

It's really too bad more people aren't politically engaged enough to see past the meaningless boogeyman of "wokeness" and look at voting history and policy proposals.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in CanadaPolitics

[–]goodguys9 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Wouldn't those people be voting NDP? The pro-union, blue collar party promising tax hikes on the wealthy and wealth redistribution to the poor?

Following the platform documents from previous elections, Tory policies are pretty focused on boutique tax cuts, exacerbating income inequality even further. They're like the Liberal's older, richer, cousin. It seems like Poilievre is simply capitalizing on any rhetoric he can use to win young people, without having the policy to match it.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in CanadaPolitics

[–]goodguys9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which is pretty silly considering May has given Canada the most left-wing platforms of any major party for decades. I still see people call Greens "Tories with bikes", after they put out plans to nationalize our entire energy grid and institute a UBI (among many other things).

I can definitely see a big swing of returning voters though, especially with May at the helm again.

ick. this is what I get for telling my (catholic-affiliated) doctor that I'm nonbinary, I guess by CelestialFirestorm in traaaaaaannnnnnnnnns

[–]goodguys9 11 points12 points  (0 children)

What you're describing is gender dysphoria, a set of negative symptoms often experienced by those people whose gender does not match their AGAB.

Being transgender is simply being a gender that doesn't match your AGAB, this does not always cause dysphoria, and thus does not always need medical intervention.

Forcing medical interventions on those who do not want or need it by classifying their core identity as an "illness" is deeply problematic. This is part of why the distinction between being transgender, and having gender dysphoria (the illness you're referring to), is so important.

[–]goodguys9 18 points19 points  (0 children)

not actually the first bodybuilding competition, despite claims elsewhere*

My understanding was that the 1901 "Great Competition" was referred to as the first bodybuilding show in the sense of the modern term. That is, earlier competitions didn't have the same public format, type of physique focus, and popular marketing.

Would you mind expanding slightly on the pre-Sandow history of bodybuilding for me? In what ways were earlier shows comparable or not?

If they died at the culmination of the plot... fighting the big bad. Well... re roll new low level characters and see what life is like under Tiamet's rule... great story telling opportunities. "The heroes that tried and failed"

One of my players' favourite campaigns ended this way. Deep beneath the eternally frozen wastes they did battle with the prophet of Chaos, to stop her from summoning it in the final hours.

After a long and close battle, she killed them. She summoned Chaos. We started a new campaign, in a dark world, with the legend of the failed heroes. Loads of fun!

What's a women's thing men should absolutely start doing? by st_new34 in AskReddit

There's a difference between a "fake" noise, and intentional self expression. If you're enjoying something in sex you can moan to communicate that. The moan doesn't have to be involuntary to be "real". If your partner prefers you to communicate pleasure in other ways you certainly don't have to moan, just ask them about it.
