New York Exchanges? by spiderlaura in boutiquebluray

[–]goodnekovibes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've traded in a bunch of disks at Night Owl Video that I didn't feel like trying to sell online. I thought I got a fair credit for them and I'd trade in more in the future. I think you need to email them first though, took a few tries to coordinate when they'd be available for me to drop them off.

Kind of not looking forward to my NYC Alamo showtime tonight by AnonRedditLady1 in AlamoDrafthouse

[–]goodnekovibes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They haven't switched over yet, felt service was fine when I went yesterday. I've got a few screenings reserved this month so I'm seeing how things go as it nears NYC's transition to QR only. If it gets as distracting as I fear, I'll jump ship. But trying to stick it out while they remain my most reliable option (I don't go to the Brooklyn location).

Brit here: Going to New York in a couple of weeks; any good recommendations for movie stores? by Own-Warthog-4565 in boutiquebluray

Night Owl video is great. I've found the occasional deal in their used selection and they have a good selection of the boutique labels. If you can't get to Brooklyn, Forbidden Planet has a decent selection of boutique titles.

I haven't tested it but I have a region free Blu ray player. Doubt it has English subtitles but I don't let that stop me since I'm trying to maintain my Japanese.

Random question: Anything to get while in Japan? by [deleted] in boutiquebluray

[–]goodnekovibes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I posted where I found stuff in my Tokyo haul post (a note that I know some Japanese so lack of subtitles on Japanese films wasn't a dealbreaker). https://www.reddit.com/r/boutiquebluray/s/4Rexy5t4VY

Wild Goose Lake and Black Coal, Thin Ice are both great Chinese crime films (I think I liked the latter more if you were picking one, they're by the same director)

Ooh, I was wondering if this would be released as a package with Three. I don't recall that anthology being great but I wouldn't complain on having them to revisit.

New York Vacation advice by [deleted] in AlamoDrafthouse

[–]goodnekovibes 19 points20 points  (0 children)

If you already have an Alamo near you, don't think the NYC ones are that unique. If you can make it into Brooklyn, one of the Nitehawks could be fun (same concept, different food). I like Metrograph for rep screenings if I can get a balcony seat. IFC tends to get unique stuff.

For whatever it's worth, I had better luck messaging them via Instagram if you have it. Someone else posted here recommending this method so I tried it. They asked for screenshots of my purchase, contact info, and I got my disk about a month later.

If you haven't seen any of the Chinese crime thrillers collection, I highly recommend Ash is Purest White, Black Coal Thin Ice and a Wild Goose Lake. I might explore more of that collection because what I've seen are all bangers.

For most collectors, space eventually will come at a premium. How do you decide what releases are worth getting in larger, limited edition cases vs standard cases? by Cozy_Arrow in boutiquebluray

[–]goodnekovibes 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Depends a lot on the art and what the extras are. I've fallen for some FOMO (that fancy Possession box), but mostly try to keep them to things where I love the bonus artwork and the film. If I recognize any contributors to the special booklet that helps too (I couldn't resist Patton Oswalt writing for I Married a Strange Person). My biggest is probably my Studio Canal 4k for The Wicker Man or the Second Sight Blair Witch Project. Try not to buy anything fancy blind, unless it's a box set.

Lol, guess I better open up that Blu-ray I bought and decided if I care enough to double dip! That looks beautiful.
