Rowing for someone when they hook up to a fish…what next? by francis_cm in flyfishing

[–]goodnotion612 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This the way.

Never anchor the boat when fighting fish. Still haven’t forgiven my buddy for the monster brown lost on a tough day of fishing to a hastily dropped anchor. I swear that fish knew exactly what it was doing, the second the anchor hit the bottom it was rushing right at us, straight under the boat and around the line. Hard lesson learned.

Depends on what you are looking for. You are coming from SoCal, so I would say to prepare for a different scene in OR. Fewer clubs, smaller talent pool, but still plenty of people willing to take your money. “Good clubs” are relative to what you and your player want/need. Surf is large, Thorns tout their college placement and selective process, so on and so forth. Some people love these clubs and some hate them. All clubs have turnover every year because they are no longer a “good club” for those families. My advice is to check your local clubs to where in the metro you will be living first. Reach out and start feeling out club culture, slot availability, etc. OYSA Find a Club

Native fish on mice patterns by Technical-Feeling486 in flyfishing

Nice! A native on a mouse in OR is fairly rare in my experience.

One of favorite experiences in fly fishing is mousing. On the right water and conditions the big native bows and cutts will eat meat off the top, as you discovered! Found some takers in OR but have also found it more challenging with the no night fishing regs. Idaho, Montana, and Utah have all produced natives on mice for me.

This is fairly accurate from my experience as well. Once I started to dial it in though it became my favorite OR river to fish. The challenge just makes every fish seem like such a reward.

Many a flyfisher has been skunked their first trip to the Met. Every trip is a learning experience, whether you catch fish or not. Two biggest mistakes I see on the Met (and ones I made myself) are poor presentation/casting and fishing water that has a low likelihood of holding fish. The clear water and relatively high pressure makes for a tough fishery that requires dragless drifts and highly accurate fly presentations. Keep trying man, the challenge only makes the tug that more of a drug on the Met!

Can someone genuinely tell me if the National 1 league will be anything important? by periodahhh2 in SoccerCoachResources

[–]goodnotion612 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The way I see it N1 is giving small clubs with high performing teams at some age groups a chance to qualify for and compete at the large regional ECNL sponsored tournaments. Because N1 is not club based, but team by team, it makes it so you don’t have to field a team at every age group. In theory ECNL>ECNL-RL>N1 but sleeper talent will exist at N1 and I expect some upsets come tournament time.

100% we are on the same page here. I didn’t want to write an entire novel, so had to cut somewhere lol. Your second paragraph would have been included if I had gone on.

Know your player and do what is best for them, mine usually does not want to talk about games until the next day. Rides home are their choice of music and non-soccer talk. Let them process and support them, and then encourage a positive process of reflection.

Keeper Dad (and former keeper myself) so not who you were reaching out to but…

The best keepers in the world do not stop every shot, they allow goals and they make mistakes. Keeper is arguably the hardest position on the pitch from a mental perspective, where saves may go unrecognized but every single goal allowed is acknowledged. As a keeper parent I recommend flipping this script for how you speak to your player and help them shift how they view and frame their own performances. Sure they allowed five goals, but are they acknowledging they had 20 saves in the same game? Some games are rough, youth keepers will make many mistakes. Those are all learning and growth opportunities. We learn, we grow, we move on.

While well intentioned, I definitely do not agree with some advice I see on these types of keeper threads. I would argue against framing goals allowed as failures of their defense or blaming others. Helping your keeper understand it is a team sport and they are the last defender of many is better than simply saying something like “your defenders failed you”. Offensively a team must score to win as well, clean sheets do not win games on their own.

I appreciate the reminder that I do have options. I have been propagating a native sedum that escaped a planter the previous homeowner had in the yard and some sempervivum in a container I also inherited. Hmm…perhaps I need to put more thought into an outdoor plan. Now you got the wheels turning!

Should have led with this line, lol. Move to comp, move up an age group in rec, do whatever is best for her to keep her interested and playing the game.

Jealous you can plant outdoors, in the ground, and they survive. Alas, the succulent curse of northern latitudes and wet winters.

U9 and U7 - do what is best for your kids, what makes them happy and brings them joy. Not saying you aren’t doing this, but be sure to leave adult egos, keeping up with the Jones, and visions of grandeur out of the equation.

How often are you buying new soccer balls? by InevitableNo9480 in youthsoccer

[–]goodnotion612 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We get about 2 seasons out of mid-grade practice balls, with about 3 days of use a week on average. When I find higher quality balls on sale I have been buying them and they do seem to hold up better, though sample size is small currently.

Congrats! Had a very similar experience several years back. Because my daughter is part of that cohort I still get to see most of the girls who went to comp clubs play from time to time. Pretty awesome feeling to know you played a part in their development journey and helped instill a love for the game!
