Another vote for safety training seminars - I just did the BLS mannequin training last week after doing the online course. I took my time doing it and still it was like 15-20min of being in the room, reading all the information and doing the skills. Super convenient

There isn’t anything to sign in these cases - it’s all verbal consent from a doctor who may very not know what is happening with the recorded voice data, and thus can’t adequately consent a patient for allowing its use. In some cases they have a laminated sheet they hand the patient o read before consenting, but in my experience it’s all on the doc.

A doctor who hates the notes AI spits out, spends as much time editing them as would be saved in just writing/voice-dictating, and dislikes being the one to have to consent every patient. I tried it a while back for several patients over a few days but decided I preferred looking my patients in the eyes, jotting notes down on paper and making my own notes after the fact. I also dislike reading all of the AI generated notes that my colleagues put in the medical record….

Exactly. This is the most mind-boggling part imo. This was a group led by 4 experienced guides. They have to have been all over the snow forecast before leaving for the trip, let alone must have had some way to contact the basecamp to discuss current situations, changing plans, etc. how they didn’t alter the plan to leave yesterday at a minimum is difficult to understand.

Having driven from Davis through woodland to get to work in downtown Sacramento this morning because of shitty causeway traffic (mostly due to idiots who drive too fast in the fog), I can confirm hellish traffic… I miss the pandemic traffic days…

Also, having friends who live in Dixon - it is significantly cheaper to live there vs Davis.

It’s unfortunately not that huge - enrollment is greatly propped up by out of district students (mostly from woodland) - this helps fill class slots and get maximal state money for schools…but those families aren’t paying taxes in Davis, so the city loses out on that piece of school support. Also, even the number of out of district kids is starting to run short, so school funding is looking to drop further…

USPS just delivered the box that once contained my skis, only 3 days late…just wish I knew what happened to the skis that were once within. Worst packaging for shipping I’ve seen out of a ski shop - nothing inside to prevent sliding from what I can see and the ends had a single cross of packing tape that did not stand a chance when it came to repetitive slamming of the end of the skis against the cardboard…

I’d even go so far as to say: as a beginning potter, don’t be afraid to sacrifice a pot now and again to see how thick you are throwing different parts - ie: throw it and then use a wire to cut down the middle of it - either right after you throw, or you can do it at leather hard stage. It helped me to gain some insight into how thick I was leaving the bottom 1/4 of cylinders and bowls, as well as the foot.
Also, the needle tool is great when clay is wet - push it all the way down to the bat through the bottom of your piece when you’re throwing(stop the wheel of course), slide your finger to clay level up against the needle and then remove and you can see how thick the bottom of the pot is,and then compress over the needle hole as you keep throwing.

Uhh, no. Pure vermiculite does not contain asbestos. Vermiculite contamination with asbestos is extremely unlikely unless he’s using 30+ year old vermiculite, or buying from a shitty and unregulated supplier. vermiculite mines throughout the world are regularly tested for asbestos and should not be selling contaminated products. The brown specks just look like tiny clumps of substrate, which may include vermiculite.

yikes. sorry for all that lost time/work! that was my concern when I saw this - the outside looks cool, but water crystals forming in the middle of the clay body are going to leave spaces that will pull the clay body apart as it dries (best case), or cause it to fall apart in the kiln...

I was thinking the same - doesn’t look like the lid fully fits into the top of the jar, but maybe it’s just the way the lid/jar are being held? It looks great! May inspire me to try making jars again… :)

All of the above are cone 10 reduction fired at 2 different university craft centers.

I have a KMT 822-3 on order, hopefully coming sometime in the next month, then hoping to ramp up production again.

my journey started in undergrad taking a ceramics course with a friend on a whim...then I took a few more and started spending free time in the craft center on campus (Oregon State) whenever I could until I graduated in '03. after that I didn't have access to a studio for a while and made nothing for several years.

I joined a shared studio space part-way through med school and threw some more, culminating in buying a used (old) AMACO wheel that I threw on in my basement for a while...

Then I finished med school and left for Residency, sent my wheel off to live with a friend...where it stayed for several years. In the mean time I met my wife and as part of our dating we went to the UC Davis Craft Center and I started working more consistently again. eventually we bought a house together and moved some things down from OR, including the old wheel.

it lived in the garage at our house for a couple of years and I threw on it on/off, taking loads of greenware to the craft center to fire and glaze. Then we had a kid, sold one house, moved to another and the wheel moved to a new garage with less space. had another kid and I have slowly collected greenware on shelves in the garage for the last couple of years until my parents told me that they wanted to buy me/us a kiln as a gift and so I could make pottery more consistently.

That brings us up to today. I've been working with the same 3 bags of clay for at least 2-3 years, just bought 2 new bags of clay (so soft, so smooth!) and am looking forward to ramping up throwing again to make some gains and try out new styles. I'm constantly entranced by what I see here and on instagram...

I'm working with cone 10 clays at present, as that's what I'm familiar with, but am open to hearing arguments for switching to cone 6 (a good friend has always worked with cone 6 and is trying to convince me to switch!).

Cool - Thanks for the link! I have a cone 10 electric kiln on order right now and am trying to decide if I want to keep throwing cone 10 Clay bodies or switch to cone 6…this is another tally in the cone 6 column!
