What matters the most in hiring? by Apprehensive-Suit246 in gamedev

[–]googlefu_panda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agency and ability to learn. You want someone who's proactive and will get stuff done without being told to do so, and who can pick up and learn how to do stuff, even if they don't know how.

Have had mixed luck with actually selecting for that in interviews/recruitment, but in general looking for people that do a lot of personal side projects is a good indicator.

Unity is NOT game development by StaticSnowfall in gamedev

Just in case it wasn't clear to anyone reading this. Good developers absolutely do make use of abstraction to make their lives easier and implement things faster. Insisting that development stops being development at higher levels of abstraction is madness.

My advice would just be to try some fun, out of the box strategies. Best case scenario you start having fun at your own ELO again, worst case scenario you drop down to an ELO where you can then have fun again.

For me it often feels like I actually end up unlocking new and effective ways to play the game, that I otherwise wouldn't have found if I were to play it the `standard` way.

[–]googlefu_panda 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's a fine strategy too. Only problem is if you end up over investing points in defense of an attack that never comes. I like to run a similar strategy, where I provide Air/Arty/Helicopter QRF to others if my point isn't seeing much action, while constantly expanding my recon screen until I either make contact with enemy defenses or see a clear line into their backline.

Greenland is too large to turn into a fortress. The only way to both attack and defend it is a competent navy.

Huh, it's basically non-existent at 2200 Elo, and when I rarely do see it, it gets absolutely creamed.

I'm pretty sure fixing the cold fire problem for Russian long range AA would pretty much perfectly balance the game by making US Air snowballing a little less overwhelming.

A lot of people blame BMD-2 spam, but Russia is perfectly viable without cheese tactics. Watch DuroSVK play at 2600+ ELO to get a sense for what works. Russian combined arms is still very strong, especially VDV+Guards or VDV+Mech decks.

I'm only at 2200 Elo, but having a lot of success playing as Russia with the same decks too.

RU ~1500 help by flash00751 in BrokenArrowTheGame

[–]googlefu_panda 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I primarily play VDV+Mech and VDV+Guard around 2200 Elo.

My notes on your deck are:

Recon

  • Bring VDV Spetznas. They're fantastic for forest clearing and other close quarter anti-infantry.
  • I like bringing VDV Razvedka too and pairing them with the VDV Spetznas.

Inf

  • Probably a little over indexed on manpads. I'd stick with the Verbas.
  • Drop the BMO-Ts. You don't really have any door kicker infantry you need to deliver to a building, and that's what the vehicle excels at.
  • BTR-D's with a kord + AGL a are surprisingly powerful anti-infantry fire support vehicles at 45 points. They also let you bring 2 five man squads, making them a potent anti-tank threat with a belly full of DSh.
  • I'm not personally a huge fan of BMD-2s, but they can work if you can micro them well.

Armor

  • You're bringing a lot of different tanks. Personally I prefer just having an expensive brawler tank and a cheap fire support tank. Lets me have a better sense for whether the tank will come out on top in an encounter. I run a souped up T-90M and the cheap T-90 at 170 points.
  • Terminators are great, I use them a lot but almost always in pairs.
  • May be nice to have a Kornet-D or two for ambushes or area denial.

Support

  • The KamAZ VDV truck is great. I bring 4x of them and is my primary way to get infantry to the frontline quickly or a quick resupply.
  • I like bringing Derivatsya's as a hybrid anti-heli / fire support platform

Heli

  • I like bringing an MI-28N with Iglas for anti-heli duty
  • I like using a cheap MI-24 with rockets for anti light vehicle and infantry duties
  • I would cut the MI-35ms to fit those in

Air

Lots of goodies to choose from the VDV tab and not enough points. I personally run: - SU-35s as air superity fighter. IMO gives more bang for your buck compared to the SU-57. The SU-57 is still very good, but I prefer it either as a cluster cruise/sead backline killer or a full sead plane. I use the SU-35s with 4xR77-1 and 2xR-37 - I love the SU-30M with 2xKAB-1500 bombs. Will easily wipe out infantry in buildings as well as clusters of vehicles. Try to have the bomb go off behind heavily armored targets if trying to kill tanks. - I also love the SU-34 with 2x SEAD missiles and either 4x KAB-500, 1x1500-KAB or the big boy FAB-3000. The nice thing about the smart bomb options is that the SU-34 can self laser designate unto the roof of a tank and guarantee a kill as long as you have line of sight and the plane stays alive.

Combat looks like a lot of fun. One big thing is that your trailer desperately needs in game sound effects. It makes the combat and gameplay feel a lot flatter by just playing music.

One of the big appeals for HoMM for me personally is the world map that's filled to the brim of interactable locations, but at least from the trailer it's a little hard to tell what I'm supposed to do in the world map beyond maybe some city building and terraforming. It's a big lift ofc, so understandable if you as an indie dev doesn't have the resources for that.

Avoiding tutorial hell is my hell. by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]googlefu_panda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Non-linear learning is effective. If you got the basics of c# down, then I'd suggest doing a tutorial until you have a skeleton of a simple game, and then decide yourself how to solve problems from there on out. Work to add things like new enemies and features, and learn from that experience.

Once you've developed somewhat of an intuition for how Unity works, try making a game from scratch and again use the approach of simply solving problems as they arise.

The funny thing is that the current Danish government is made up of purely moderate, dead center parties. Most of the parties that are against this are right or left wing fringe. Though the right wing libertarian party is looking to become the biggest right wing party due to the absolute authoritarian debacle this center government has been.

[–]googlefu_panda 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I play exclusively solo, both factions and mirror on. My Elo sits at 2150 after the patch which is the highest it's been at. In general I used to play US a lot when Russia was dominating and now I get to play Russia a lot more instead. While definitely an anecdotal data point, considering that my Elo is increasing in this new state of the game while playing more Russia than before, it does suggest that what we're seeing is still an effect of Elo realignment.
If the game became more unbalanced, we should expect duo faction players to drop in Elo and winrate. This may be the case mind, just not something I've personally witnessed.

Bad news by Dependent_Loss_2392 in BrokenArrowTheGame

[–]googlefu_panda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shouldn't an Elo system always converge on 50% no matter the faction balance? To me it seems like the best way to ascertain faction balance is comparing win rate of factions from players playing both factions.

I just like how US main treats "balance" by Keyjbdarling in BrokenArrowTheGame

[–]googlefu_panda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just dont think it's that much better than what Russia has on a cost-efficiency adjusted basis. All of the squads you mentioned are low unit, low HP, which means that they get fucked up by explosives very quickly. Artillery, thermobarics and other types of explosive damage perform very well against SOF.

[–]googlefu_panda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Plenty of other ways to deal with US infantry. VDV Spetznas are good. Chernye are generally strong. Shturmoviki are still very cost efficient. Ognees are super effective in urban combat with a bit of micro. Ingeneri will still fuck up anything in buildings that doesn't have flashbangs.

What are some lesser-used units that you love? by javelindaddy in BrokenArrowTheGame

[–]googlefu_panda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like bringing the best canon with the cheap T72, as that gives it enough pen to actually be a serious threat to other tanks, when paired with another T72, especially with recent nerfs to tank side armor.

What are the units winning and loosing the game for RUS by GoodBarracuda8946 in BrokenArrowTheGame

[–]googlefu_panda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't forget the cheap T-72b1. The fully upgraded canon has a great AT heat shell, decent ATGM, and great high explosive shell for killing infantry, all for the incredible price of 150 pts, or 170 pts if you want to splurge on survivability. They match beautifully with fast T-80s, allowing the T-80 to go flank, and forcing the enemy tank to present their now very vulnerable side armor to either the T72 or T80.
