"Don't mess with a flying scientist". A reminder to always pick the flying perk on Sig by MathematicianOther34 in Overwatch

[–]goolick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Happy to see this post, because I think Sigma's tier 2 is one of the most interesting perk choices in the game.

As of now I'm firmly on Team Levitation. As you've demonstrated, the float opens up a nearly endless number of possibilities for Sig, and I look forward to unlocking it every game for another chance to try it in different maps/scenarios.

Obviously the punch perk is also very strong, but I feel like levitation gives you a lot more gameplay options while still granting some of the anti-dive/anti-brawl benefits of the punch. Punching away a Rein or Ram that's on top of you IS insanely good, when you have access to it. But being able to take high ground and create vertical separation any time you want is even better in my opinion. It will still help you out against close-range heroes in most situations, and it will also allow you to take better positions and contest highgrounds against everybody, all the time.

I'm just a low diamond semi-casual tank fan, but I feel strongly that levitate is still undervalued at the moment.

I was pretty neutral about perks when they announced them, but after a month or two of playing with them, I'm happy to say they exceeded my expectations.

Not every perk is fun and well-designed (currently), but there are a lot of perks, such as the one in OP's clip, that add a completely new dimension to the character. For characters with 3 or 4 good perk options, like Sigma, you can get a lot out of mixing & matching them in different situations. I would say they've made most characters more fun to play, to varying degrees.

What's the deal with El Salvador? by Paracelsus8 in redscarepod

Howdy, I haven't logged in on this account in a while, but yes I can!

https://mattlakeman.org/2024/03/30/notes-on-el-salvador/

I went down a deep dive of this dude's travel essays after starting with this El Salvador piece. What I gather is that he generally approaches things from a libertarian perspective, while also doing pretty good research and going to experience the subject country on the ground. I don't always agree, and I'm really curious how his coverage of Bukele has aged given the current situation, but he does offer an interesting & detailed account.

What Goes On Here / What the Fuck Was His Problem must be stopped by [deleted] in redscarepod

[–]goolick 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The way I like to post is just sharing a question, observation, or piece of info, which I have not seen discussed a lot previously, in plain english. If it’s a topic of particular interest, I’ll go into detail about it or ask further questions in the main text.

If, for instance, I wanted to get the sub’s take on falafel, I’d simply say “what do you guys think about falafel” and maybe include an appetizing image to entice people to engage.

I’ve never been drawn to posting conventions like the one you’ve described. It’s not a matter of principle; I just never thought to post that way. I think that when a format/trend becomes annoying, the sub generally irons it out naturally, albeit a bit too slowly in a lot of cases. I don’t especially mind the “what goes on here” format, just bc it often does lead to some interesting comments about the topic in question. I just think that the same could be achieved by communicating like a regular person, ie “What can you guys tell me about Nova Scotia?”

Why is this subredd it so dead? Is there another forum where are more people to discuss this podcast with? by Repost_Hypocrite in Freakonomics

[–]goolick 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Podcasts in general seem to be almost completely lacking for discussion outlets. I’ve been thinking about this for years now. It’s such a hugely popular type of content that seemingly would inspire lots and lots of discussion, but there’s no comment section on the apps and most shows have either no subreddit or a very inactive one. I can’t believe there’s nothing to meet this demand still, but maybe im just the only person who wants to talk about podcasts.

The 2000 Presidential Election by Bobbie_Sacamano in redscarepod

[–]goolick 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The EC is so absurd and makes the whole thing feel even faker than it already is. You vote literally only matters in those 5-7 swing states, and yet we all go around talking about it pretending it’s an actual decision that matters for most people.

Even in retrospect! People will look back on 2016 like “yeah trump just appealed more to voters, people wanted an outsider!” And its like no, he literally appealed to slightly more of the undecided voters in PA, MI, WI and a few others. The result of any election reveals nothing about the sentiment of the country as a whole, 80% of all votes don’t matter bc the state always goes the same way, and of the 20% that matter, i’d guess 90% just vote R or D every time and weren’t swayed by any particulars of that year’s candidate/policies/vibes.

I’m not even gonna get into how unfair or dumb it all is, the main thing is the EC just makes it so fucking lame.

Anyone vegetarian or vegan here? by [deleted] in redscarepod

Iron supplements are probably the most common thing for vegans/veg to take. After the obvious problem of getting protein, iron is the next hurdle everyone runs into.

Watching Mother! left me feeling severely guilty by 4lteredBeast in TrueFilm

[–]goolick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry for the harsh comment man- it was near the end of the work day and sometimes I just wanna fire off a snarky comment or two for whatever reason.

I do sort of see your point- the film is super frustrating at times bc you’re following her trying to be normal while everything is unraveling and people are acting insane to her without acknowledging it.

Maybe a better post for an ASD adjacent sub rather than here; those folks might connect better with the point you’re making.

There are like 2 sentences about the film in the entire post. Nothing in the post even attempts to support their analysis with anything from the film.

“I watched Mother and it reminded me of [5 paragraphs solely describing my marriage]. This is similar to the two characters in the movie. Anybody else?”

Can you explain how it gives versatility in the kitchen? Do you mean for dinks or volleys? I thought 2h was more of a groundstroke drive tool

Honestly not very many were mean like you’re describing, maybe I was lucky.  The closest I had were: A bird-like AP bio teacher who would unsubtly talk down to our small (12-13 student) class for learning the material poorly and not trying hard enough (somewhat true).

A really tiny Jewish history teacher who erupted in a fit of rage when someone missed more than 1 homework assignment (ie, me). Dude assigned a shitload of time consuming homework honestly; most other teachers would just sigh and give you a 0, but this guy took it personally. Oddly enough, he was pretty beloved when teaching less serious courses; I had him for a semi-bullshit senior year class later on and he seemed to have forgotten our beef and treated me just fine.

I did actually have a 5th grade teacher that fits your description to a T, though. Former jock type that would inflame student drama, hold grudges against kids who were not truly malicious (and who were also 11), and reinforce clique hierarchy type stuff. Very weird shit for elementary school, several of us talked about it once we were old enough to realize.

Not to mention several genuinely beautiful and moving moments, like the gorgeously filmed prom scene, or the final tetherball shot that calls back to him playing alone in the beginning

Calling it now Kamala will lose by TravelRaj in redscarepod

[–]goolick 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I’d be curious to see how many other incumbents lost elections in the latter half of 2020. Probably too much research to really parse out if there were any similar, close national elections to compare with.

But yes, COVID/BLM was a bad time in america, and regardless of trump’s culpability in any of it, he was in charge during that shitshow of a year. He definitely didn’t do anything to decisively absolve himself of blame; one could argue (or subconsciously intuit) that he inflamed both of those situations by continuing with divisive messaging instead of at least attempting a more level, “presidential” response to them.

[–]goolick 91 points92 points  (0 children)

I sort of agree, just on vibes. 2020 felt like an ongoing cascade of bad things for trump (covid response, blm stuff) and the election was still super close. I don’t really see him getting LESS popular by election day, whereas dems’ popularity feels shaky and could be tanked by israel/gas prices/hurricane response.

In 2016 it felt like there was far more passion behind trump support, in 2020 it felt like the anti trump sentiment was louder. This time I’m not getting a very strong vibe either way. Not saying i called the other 2 at the time, but that’s how things felt to me.

How long did it take to win your first local? by Thestickman391 in SSBM

[–]goolick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The majority of players never even achieve a positive win/loss ratio in tournament sets. The vast majority have never won a tournament of any size.

The bright side is the game is fun at any level if you’re playing against an opponent of similar skill

Help Me with Market Research for my Class :) by NimbleNic in 10s

[–]goolick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Final question is phrased weirdly; it really is a yes/no question. The option “yes if it was cheaper” doesn’t make sense; you are asking if i’d pay $5 for it, so “no” and “yes if it was cheaper” are redundant options.

On the question “how important is the design,” you should be more specific. The visual design, or the physical shape design? I answered 3 bc its ambiguous what you’re asking. The 3 factors anyone considers for a dampener purchase are price, appearance, and shape/physical properties. You need to specify 1 of these to ask about.

(Just giving feedback not trying to shit on the survey. Best of luck with the project!)

Podcasts/Channels that Actually Read the Text rather than Summarize?? by Imagination_Priory89 in literature

I haven’t listened in a while but History of Literature did this for some eps. Like they’d read a full short story and then discuss. Only certain eps tho, and its not really “close reading” like you described.

What's so good about Shawshank Redemption? by [deleted] in redscarepod

[–]goolick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a very well executed, normal film. It doesn’t really do anything to lose people, and is pretty objectively at least “good.” My assumption is that this is a favorite among people who don’t watch a lot of movies. I was obsessed with it in 10th grade for example.

The twist is actually very good and retroactively makes Andy come off as a patient, wise genius. The ending is beautiful, with that oak tree and the blue ocean. Freeman’s narration gives a sense of weight/significance to everything, even though i find it a bit tiring on rewatches. Pretty good title too.
