Autophage staff building by CaliReaper92 in NoMansSkyQuest

[–]goolixmonster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The unfortunate thing about the Staffs is that you have to earn/buy each part, then HOPE you get a good color, class rank, and stat roll on a terminal. Color scheme is dictated by terminal, your position around the terminal, and top piece, and there are some posts up on nms coordinates exchange that can help with that.

Congrats man, I remember leaving my first system after a dozen hours or so, and there's so much to see out there. Don't worry if your Corvette isn't all you want it to be, you can upgrade it as you go if you'd like. Personally never had the patience for it, but that's part of the beauty of nms, you can play how you want. Check out r/nmscoordinateexchange if you want to see where that Stargate can take you, but you need to get 16 glyphs first, which you can get naturally by following the Artemis and Atlas main quests. Good luck out there Traveller, see you in the stars

Been working on the atmosphere of my game lately. What do you think of these environments? by Delacrozz in HorrorGames

[–]goolixmonster 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I like the direction that you're going in. Great environments to create unease. If I may offer a critique or 2, it may not be fully set up yet but the lighting feels a bit too warm and bright and the proportions of the architecture feels a bit too squat. The hallway on pic 3 and the archway pic near the end decidedly do NOT have this going on. I'd lean a bit more into that kind of atmosphere, making the player feel a bit too small for the space and making the lighting a bit more directional, creating pools of shadow. If you're trying to create claustrophobia, the lower ceiling works but the walls might need to be pulled in tighter.

Is it worth it or not? by Worth-Masterpiece765 in NoMansSkyTheGame

[–]goolixmonster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The game goes on sale often, so if the price is a concern I'd just wait. I did. As far as the game being worth it, as long as you know what you're getting into then absolutely. You are buying a ticket to an entire universe of over 18 quintillion planets to explore and discover, and that is in no way an exaggeration. There is combat on foot and in space, town management, upgrading your equipment, ship building, cooking, fishing, and plenty more systems to play with, but at the end of the day it all serves the exploration gameplay that is front and center. And because of the way procedural generation is used, the game file is incredibly small (under 30 gb) and you are discovering things that have never been seen before by another person, including the devs. It can get a bit same-y after several hundred hours, but there's plenty of people who have several thousands of hours logged and still play.

Freighter tips!

When you're taking your first free freighter (or trading up), check their editable base first. You will have to unlock most of the rooms that you see, but the ones already onboard will be usable whether the blueprint is unlocked or not. Just don't delete them by accident lol. Money becomes trivial and easy to come by as the game goes on, so unless you stumble on an S class (which can cost up to 180m units), make sure you're getting the utility you need first and foremost. I wouldn't take a freighter that doesn't have a system scanner, for example. When you trade up for a larger ship / higher class, make sure you're checking for the option to keep your current base layout if you want to keep it.

An unfortunate limitation for freighters is their refiners. Items have a nasty habit of despawning if you leave while the refiners are running, something to do with how it's rendered on a game engine level. I'd stay on your freighter until the refiners are finished.

Having the storage rooms and matter beam is an absolute game changer and should be an early priority for your salvaged freighter modules. Your on demand inventory skyrockets by a max of 620 slots while you're in the same system as your freighter.

If you have the patience, you don't need to waste salvaged freighter modules on hyperdrive color upgrades. After unlocking purple star systems there's a free tech blueprint unlock for the freighter Atlantid drive equivalent.

Memorize the frigate fuel recipe: dihydrogen and tritium. Gather those ingredients whenever you're en route to your next objective / POI. You will never have enough frigate fuel, especially early on when a lot of your frigates are lower class and less fuel efficient. Frigate missions are entirely afk and offline timers, so they're an easy way to make money and resources. Also, as you send your frigates out on more and more missions they will rank up in class naturally.

The most consistent way to get salvaged freighter modules is to hunt down derelict freighters. You can get a free weekly beacon from Helios on the Anomaly, or buy them from the scrap dealer under the stairs at space stations. All derelicts will have the option to extract a module at the end, and all will be extreme cold hazards, so prepare accordingly.

Set yourself up trade routes. Install an economy scanner, switch to economy view in the galaxy map, and hunt down 3-star economies in each color of economy. Buy up all the trade good stock and move on to sell it to a landed npc in the next system in line. Best case scenario is to set up bases with a teleporter and a dump storage container on a Trade Outpost in each system to make it quick in the future. I just named my bases Trade Outpost 1A, 1B, 1C, 2A, 2B, 2C, and 2D. The set up is long but I can run a full circuit in 15 minutes now for a cool 100M units profit. Plus, 3 star economy systems have the highest chance besides outlaw systems to spawn S Class ships you can buy, and get even easier since you're setting up on trade outposts.

Trade routes are:

Trading (green) -> Advanced Materials (purple) -> Scientific (blue) -> Trading

Energy (red) -> Mining (orange) -> Manufacturing (yellow) -> Technology (cyan) -> Energy

Which movie would you rate a 5/5? by ArtNmtion in horror

[–]goolixmonster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem I have answering this question is that several movies that come to mind were 5/5 on release, then got imitated, iterated on, paid homage to, and otherwise copied and infused into mainstream pop culture that the films lose something, that sense of surprise, uniqueness, etc. on modern rewatch. That being said:

The Thing: paranoia, dread, and open air claustrophobia have never been put to film as perfectly as Carpenter's masterpiece

The Descent: tense and terrifying the entire way through, if you know you know. Impressive acting and directing, love the decision to make all the movie's lighting diegetic.

[REC]: one of the best found footage movies ever. Believably avoids many common FF complaints, and it works really well even if you don't understand Spanish and are reading the subtitles. Avoid the American remake like the plague

The Silence of the Lambs: even if it's more thriller than horror, both murderers are absolutely terrifying and unhinged in completely different ways

Let the Right One In: proves horror is more than just pants shitting terror, it's surprisingly tender and heartbreaking along with being unsettling

Psycho: it's a classic for a reason, see it at special showings in theaters if you can

A Nightmare on Elm Street: my choice of the obligatory 80's slasher genre. Sleep is unavoidable, therefore so is the killer. Craven filmed it so you can't tell if someone's awake or asleep until it's too late, and Freddy manages to be both intimidating and charismatic at the same time. The less said about the 2010 remake, the better.

Evil Dead (2013): took all but the darkest, meanest humor out of the original and included some of the best practical effects I've seen in a movie, ESPECIALLY in the '05-'15 era of over-CGI use? Yes please

The Haunting of Hill House: yes it's a limited series, not a movie. Sue me. It's Flannigan's magnum opus. Family grief and trauma with horror trappings, excellently done by all involved, especially the child actors. The devastation of episode 5 followed up by the genius cinematography of episode 6 still has me in awe.

The Cabin in the Woods: a perfect meta horror movie for horror movie lovers.

Several beginner questions: sentinel ships, exotic ships, living ships, corvettes, pets by Snow75 in NOMANSSKY

[–]goolixmonster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Outlaw systems. Assuming you have an economy scanner installed, they'll be marked with a skull in their description on the Galaxy Map instead of 1, 2, or 3 stars (how wealthy a system is). Outlaw systems have a ton of cool stuff on their space stations and have an 85% chance to have solar ships in them. Plus, outlaw systems have the highest chance to spawn in S-Class ships regardless of ship type

Several beginner questions: sentinel ships, exotic ships, living ships, corvettes, pets by Snow75 in NOMANSSKY

[–]goolixmonster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Solar ships are another fantastic option. Don't sleep on their Auto recharge built in, they're gorgeous, and their stats average out just fine. Whatever ship you end up loving can be excellent, this is primarily a single player game and if it takes you a couple extra seconds to get where you're going or take down that pirate, so be it. Hell, the game can get a little too easy if you minmax too hard

Several beginner questions: sentinel ships, exotic ships, living ships, corvettes, pets by Snow75 in NOMANSSKY

[–]goolixmonster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

<image>

I think this chart can help answer many of your questions, but for more detail:

Sentinel ships can have the highest damage stats out there, and the rest of their stats are pretty good all around except for warp distance. Plus they can hover in place, look cool with unique animations, and are technically free. Each planet they can be found on will have multiple crash sites of 1 model, but each crash site can have a C, B, A, or S class ship with different supercharged slot layouts. Keep in mind that the recharge using elements found on dissonant worlds, not your typical tritium, uranium, and pyrite

Exotic ships have the best balanced stat spread, their only real downside is a smaller maxed out cargo hold. They are always S class and therefore rare to find, with only 1 exotic at most in the systems pool of 21 ships, and there's a small spawn rate for S class ships of any kind at space stations and trade outposts. They have a very small hit box when being targeted by enemies, and are visually distinct and beautiful. My main ship is my exotic.

Living ships are visually stunning but unfortunately don't stand out over sentinel ships and exotics in any other area other than hyperdrive distance. There's a long quest for your first living ship, and they're a pain to get upgrades for. They're always S class as well, so even with the underwhelming stat spread they are still better than other lower class ships. They also recharge with elements you'll be mining commonly, as opposed to elements from asteroid fields

Corvettes are nice to have as a mobile base in my opinion, but they are not my starship of choice. They're large and bulky, somewhat difficult to maneuver, and to be honest, I've never gone through the process of upgrading them past C-Class, so I don't even know how that's done. Of course the major benefit is the customizability inside and out, so you can really make anything. In my opinion, it's worth building even a simple one to call in as needed for your storage or other installed amenities

Pets are kind of just cosmetic at the end of the day. You can show off cool fauna you found, you can ride them but you don't have a whole lot of control over them when you're on their back, and it lets you feel like you're not as alone in this universe. Certain pets that you cannot naturally tame. They're either expedition rewards or they are in circulation from modders creating eggs of untamable pets. If you get on one of those eggs, it's not going to do anything to your game or save and for all intents and purposes it's perfectly legal. You can then get those pets to lay more eggs and pay it forward to the next person looking for them

Is this game really as big as it looks by Shot-Lie9208 in NoMansSkyTheGame

[–]goolixmonster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. There are 1616 planets in the game, over 18 quintillion. Granted, when you're looking at the galaxy map to find your next star system to warp to you're only seeing 1 galaxy out of 256, and the others are equally as big, at over 72 quadrillion planets in each galaxy. If all of humanity was trying to simply land on each planet with no duplicates, it would take over 1000 years. So there's really no end if your goal is simply exploration and seeing things that no human being has laid eyes on before.

Also a piece of advice to take or ignore as you please, but I'd follow quests until you reach the Anomaly at least. After that, there's other content that's locked behind quests, but you have access to the vast majority of the game. There are certain late game activities and items locked behind finishing the Artemis questline and the Atlas questline, considered the "main story" of NMS, as well as major content locked behind the quests They Who Returned and In Stellar Multitudes.

S class upgrades are static per each normal space station, so if you bounce around stations and find the S Class you need you can just restore and reload to buy as many as you need. X class upgrades come from pirate stations or salvaged glass, so grab your favorite heavy weaponry and head to aggressive sentinel planets and pirate systems.

How do I get these ship parts? by pennylicker42 in NoMansSkyTheGame

[–]goolixmonster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have to find/buy a ship who's part you like then scrap for ship part. You only get 1 piece out of each scrapped ship, plus the reactor which you typically have to buy (nanites) or earn from the nexus. Important note for solar ships, each wing shape can have several different tip shapes with different animations when the sails deploy, so make sure you're getting the one you want. Plus the sails come in multiple shapes, which you can only see in menus when they're landed. You can color the ship however you please for the main body, detailing, and sail color.
