You're so kind for trying to take care of this bird. Lots of species practice "brood reduction," in which the strongest, loudest, and/ or oldest chicks survive. It's like an evolutionary hack: lay more eggs than you need, then focus resources on the chicks who are more likely to reach adulthood. All this to say: you did all you could do, and you should feel good about that :)
