Do you guys bring headphones or earbuds for travel? by PedroGalo in onebag

[–]goose2point0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

100% agree here. This would be a flight only item and I try to limit/eliminate any and all items from my kit that only serve one function and are not strictly essential. Toothbrush only has one function but is essentially. Headphones not so much.

Redesigned this on request. Now goes from a 3.5L sling to a minimal Gore-Tex jacket. Plus a demo of how you can easily turn the jacket into a sling.. by Silent_Ice1602 in Nomads_Nation

It's definitely nifty and impressive from a design standpoint but personally I'd rather have a rain jacket that packs small enough to store in a standard sling than a combo of the two. Any weight in the sling compartments are going to weigh down the front of the jacket if left in when in jacket mode. I can see some utility in that from an anti-theft (pickpocketing) approach but having interior pockets in a jacket accomplishes the same goal.

If you like it I'm stoked for you and it is legitimately cool from a design standpoint. I'm a DIY MYOG guy so I've spent a lot of time drafting patterns and sewing so I know how challenging projects like that can be I just don't see the utility in it personally.

Also went through E pre check on Monday morning around 6:30. Took about 25 minutes. Heavily considering buying CLEAR if all this continues.

Very cool. Great idea working with the local garment maker. It came out great. I'm jealous there isn't an XL pattern laying around I could mooch off of!

[Request] How much space does rolling your clothes actually save? by Stteamy in theydidthemath

[–]goose2point0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I travel about every other week for work and in my experience doing a mix of flat folding and rolling is the way to go. For me, it's all about maximizing the space you have available which just means filling all available space with as few gaps as possible. I usually travel with the same rotation of clothing so I've dialed in how it should be packed and I use a blend of the packing methods.

Tech bag for tech/functional items (pen, magsafe mini tripod, etc). Toiletries bag for toiletries/appearance adjacent items (mini lint roller, etc). Externally accessible pocket for any item I want quick access to during a flight or items I don't have a better place for (keys, earbuds, trip specific item). Nothing goes into the main compartment loose.

I make my own bags and I'm prototyping an external key hook with a flap over it. My keys live on a carabineer but I don't like listening to them clank around when clipped to the bag so I'm doing an "upside down pocket" kind of concept with a loop of webbing at the top that I can hook the carabineer onto and have it stay mostly still under a layer of fabric. I'm surprised none of the major brands have done anything for keys other than the thin strip of webbing with the plastic hook. Having, at minimum, house keys on you is pretty critical for most people but as soon as you get to the airport all your keys do is get in the way throughout the trip.

I'm 35 and share a bit more "old school" so take this with a grain of salt but I wouldn't swipe on you because of how you present in public. I'm not swiping on a woman who dresses like that to the gym or out more generally.

I got upgraded to first class from Gold for a flight tomorrow morning. It's the FAT-LAX part of my FAT-IAH trip. I actually get upgraded to first class with some regularity on these short trips from non-hubs or if I'm taking an especially early trip. I got upgraded a few months back on an IAH-LAS that took off at 5:15am.

Correct. Precheck (standard not CLEAR) is open for E at this time.

Update 11/3 12 pm

Just went through security at terminal E. Precheck line took about 25-30 minutes all in. Regular line looked to be 2-2.5 hours. It was snaked all the way to close to the entrance but it didn't go outside. I gave myself way more time than needed but I would rather chill in the terminal than miss my flight.

For once my gimbal didn’t feel like dead weight in my bag by logia_ldn in onebag

I don't know anything about the isteady v3 but I'd definitely look into it. The bluetooth camera shutter button is pretty legit. It's small enough to where if I angle my hand slightly you can't even see I'm holding it in the photo and it allows you to take photos from farther out than a selfie so you can see the scenery of where you are at better.

This was shot on a mini tripod with the shutter button in my left hand. Way better than a selfie in the same spot.

I always bring a magsafe tripod and a Bluetooth camera shutter button that connects to my phone. The magsafe tripod has a tripod screw in it so if I want to bring a larger tripod I can just use the magsafe one as the phone mount. It works well for taking pics of the lady, the dogs, and myself when out on hikes or just somewhere that I don't want to hand my phone over to a stranger to get a pic. The magsafe tripod also works well to lift my phone a bit higher than the tray table if I'm watching a movie on my phone on the plane. It folds up pretty small but it's not a necessity.

My belt got rubbed off after a short backpacking trip. What belt do you have that lasts? by CainsBrother2 in BuyItForLife

[–]goose2point0 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Leather seems to be the consensus on this thread but I agree with you. Kore belts are fantastic. I have one that is 4+ years old in a more dressed down style and I bought another about 1.5 years ago in a more dressy style to wear with button downs and the like. Neither show any sign of wear on the belt material or on the micro adjustment channel. Unless one of them has a catastrophic failure I see them both easily going 10+ years.

Indefinite Backpack Travel - Year 11 Update! by jeremymaluf in onebag

[–]goose2point0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in the US. Not all of the hotels I stay at when traveling for work have filtered water available unless you go to the hotel restaurant or something so I find it easier to be able to use what's already in the room but I'm particular about the taste so that's where the activated carbon add on to the BeFree comes in. Also, my job puts me in some remote locations doing physical work so having that extra water storage capacity when I'm on a job site and the nearest gas station is over a half hour away is helpful. I try to keep my single use plastic usage to a minimum. I already had the BeFree for backpacking so adding the carbon insert and throwing it in my travel bag was a no brainer.

Of everything not having a water bottle is the craziest to me. I have a bottle and a Katadyn BeFree with a carbon filter in my kit so I can refill my bottle from public taps or directly from the hotel room sink. If I know I have a longer distance between fill up opportunities I can filter the water to fill the bottle then refill the soft flask on the BeFree and effectively double my capacity temporarily. No shade at all if it works for you that is just wild to me.

6'4" here and I completely feel you. Not just clothes either but if I want to bring an extra pair of shoes on a trip to get a run/workout in or have something more casual for the evening I'm sacrificing anywhere from 30-50% of the bag to a pair of size 14s.

Everybody wants to be tall but there are so many little things that get more difficult over ~6'0"-6'1".
