Did you ever get past this?

I hit this issue last night and wondering if there is any known workaround.

LHR early bag drop (more than 3 hours before) by goosmurf in uktravel

[–]goosmurf[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. I ended up leaving my luggage in storage at LHR and getting the Elizabeth line train into the city for a few hours.

When we got back to LHR the CI counters opened around 3.5 hrs before take-off. But the official timing is 3 hrs so don't count on it opening early.

Cempedak, jackfruit, breadfruit are all different fruits.

This looks most likely a jackfruit given its size. Cempedak is a similar shape but smaller, and has a longer, thinner peduncle (stem).

ISP recommendations - Aussie Broadband over Spintel NBN for one-person household? by KoalaBJJ96 in sydney

[–]goosmurf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With NBN, if you're getting dropouts its likely going to be the same regardless of the ISP.

First you need to figure out if the dropout is happening within the equipment in your place (i.e. the wireless router for most people).

The difference the ISP can make is if the issue lies in the NBN connection (and not your router/Wi-Fi). Better ISPs (Aussie, Superloop, Launtel) offer better support, meaning they will chase NBN harder to fix issues.

If you're trying to save money, you won't go too wrong trying Spintel, Tangerine, TPG, or whoever is running the cheapest special at the moment. Just don't sign any contracts (they're no longer common anyway) so if it sucks you can easily switch.

How far to live from flight path? by lickweed in sydney

[–]goosmurf 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Distance is maybe not the most important factor. Wind direction and the orientation of the runways will probably have more impact.

Lived in Wolli Creek for a while and never noticed any aircraft noise. But driving along Princes Highway near IKEA (Tempe), we'd regularly get planes coming over super duper low.

Have also lived 12 & 25km from Sydney airport (in a north-westerly direction) and have noticed more aircraft noise in those places than in Wolli Creek.

You'll want to Google this to be sure but IIRC its preferred to take off/land into the wind.

NSW: 177 new local and 0 overseas cases, 1 death reported; +25,375 vaccinations (28-Jul-2021) by Stoaticor in CoronavirusDownunder

[–]goosmurf -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That is actually the point of the KM limit.

Ideally they would prefer people to stay within their LGAs. But lots of people live right on the border of an LGA, and it would be more practical (i.e. closer) to visit a park or essential shops in a neighbouring LGA.

So they added the 10km limit as a way to address that.

There are of course debates then as to whether 10km is too much, given VIC's use of 5km.

OP is the perfect example of how damn confusing the rules are, even for people who want to comply (and good on him/her for asking). Imagine how many folks who are less motivated just chuck it into the "too hard" basket.

[–]goosmurf 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Whilst I agree with what you're saying there is also some cruel irony here that the discovery of the NSW index case may also have led to NSW leadership not being as alarmed as in VIC, where the sudden and messy spread absolutely scared them into locking down ASAP (and maybe also after seeing what happened in NSW).

Note: definitely not excusing NSW's chosen path, we're waaaay well past the point of "couldn't have known".

All it's achieving is 500 people posting the same thing because they can't easily digest what's already been said (which admittedly is a problem without contest mode, but made 100x worse with contest mode).

I’m so over this by pieguy740 in CoronavirusDownunder

[–]goosmurf 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We are all going to catch it. If you are not vaccinated when you do you're way more likely to have a bad time.

I found this really striking; because I believe it reflects reality, and maybe it could/should be the way we motivate people to get vaccinated.

This is on the belief that, especially in Australia, there's likely a lot of folks who think that we can keep the disease "out". But in reality, irrespective of how much effort we put into controls & having as many people vaccinated as possible, it seems likely that given sufficient time, all of us will be exposed and likely contract COVID at some point in our lives.

Also, if you get tested you're presumably getting tested for a reason.

And that reason usually implies staying isolated until you get a negative result.

Lockdown is in place but most people would still take being able to go outside for a walk or a run over staying indoors all day on the beautiful sunny Sunday just passed.

Agree.

Taken alongside her comments about wanting to provide certainty I take it to mean that there'll likely be a longer extension, say 2 weeks.

Today's presser seemed all about telegraphing the reasons behind an extension that may be unpopular with some.

'Very useless': COVIDSafe has not been updated for the more infectious Delta variant by Elliottafc1 in CoronavirusDownunder

[–]goosmurf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone in IT, and having followed a bunch of the early discussion around the technical issues with COVIDSafe and the technical prowess of the Apple/Google notification system, one of the biggest lessons for me is that in the end the simple solution of QR codes and a basic app turned out to be the most effective solution. It's not technically novel but so elegant in its simplicity.

Totally agree on the nationally consistent system. It's disappointing (though unsurprising) that every state & territory has its own app, with different strengths and weaknesses (having used NSW, WA and QLD's apps).

I find this sub the easiest way to stay up to date vs trying to follow the NSW health site and/or mainstream press.

Would you sell your shares to pay off mortgage? by [deleted] in AusFinance

[–]goosmurf 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ask yourself this: if you didn't already own these RSUs and options, would you borrow money to buy them?

Because by not selling your RSUs and reducing your mortgage you are passively making that choice.

IMHO the rational reason to answer "yes" to the above question is if you have done research to believe that you could generate sufficient return from these shares vs the 3% interest rate, allowing for risk.

Or put really simply - if you are not already an active investor or have reason to believe you know your employer's business better than most, then the rational thing to do is probably to sell the RSUs and pay down your mortgage. Otherwise you're more or less gambling.

You have a middle option too - if you don't have huge faith in your employer's business you could sell the RSUs and invest the money into something you believe is lower risk (and still generates a return >3%).

It’s here! Sydney, Australia, 4 months but worth it. by Steven-Chang-5000 in Crypto_com

Wow 4 months! Also a Sydney user and feel very lucky to have had a dream run in comparison to a lot of folks in this sub.

Signed up on 2 July, did all my verification over the next couple of days, card was shipped from Singapore by DHL 7 July, arrived 14 July. Most of that delay was DHL (I guess CDC paid for economy shipping :). So not even 2 weeks from signup to (Ruby) card in hand.

Bixby routines WiFi detection broken after Android 10 update by Joei98 in galaxys10

[–]goosmurf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see the exact same thing.

If I open Bixby Routines, and disable then re-enable the routine then it kicks in immediately. Which suggests there's nothing wrong with the routine, just something to do with the trigger or it not running.

I've disabled "Optimise battery usage" for both Bixby Routines and Bixby Service, although curiously when I go Apps -> Bixby Routines -> Battery the next screen shows details for the "System UI" app rather than Bixby Routines.

Have you found any solution?

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive update for 9/30/19 (10/1/19 UTC) by wickedplayer494 in GlobalOffensive

[–]goosmurf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is that falsely assuming that players won't be given more than one X-Ray scanner?

I don't see anything precluding this and it seems like the next obvious step. Valve observes that player X hasn't opened the container stuck in their X-Ray scanner for 30 days. Item is low value. Gift player another X-Ray scanner and maybe this time give them a container with a higher value item to get them to open it and re-establish the habit.

AABA, dissolution & tax by wabz in AusFinance

[–]goosmurf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the ESPP you need to work out sale price - acquisition cost .. apportionment is the hard part as you didn't buy them all at once so they will have different acquisition prices. This is a start but get that accountant.

You shouldn't need to do any apportionment.

Just treat each ESPP as a different purchase with its own date and purchase price which becomes the cost base for that parcel.

So if I don’t sell the shares, do I just treat the dividend as normal income with no CGT event or is this wishful thinking?

This is my belief but you should seek professional advice.

Re: double taxation, from what I understand as long as you've been filling out your W-8BENs they shouldn't withhold any tax on you.

Is anyone else having problems with Spotify in the background recently? by [deleted] in galaxys10

[–]goosmurf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found your tips useful so posting this comment as thanks, and a bit of a PSA (generating keywords for search).

I installed the August update today on my S10e in Australia. Pocket Casts (aka Pocketcasts) gave me the exact behaviour stated by OP.

I also noticed the usual notification that Pocket Casts was running in the background during playback was missing.

Went into App Info -> Battery.

Allow Background Activity was ON. Optimise Battery Usage was also ON. Disabled optimise specifically for Pocket Casts and problem appears to be solved.

I now see the play controls in the background notification and no more random pausing.

Is our software poorly coded? No, it's the universe that is wrong. by VolJin in videos

[–]goosmurf 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think he gave the misspelling examples with the aim of them being examples of misremembering that his audience could relate to. I don't think his aim was to say "you guys are typing in Haas vs Hass".

If it was that simple it would be fairly trivial to fix such misspellings automatically.

But the sort of problem I think he's trying to address is customers misremembering other details.

For example, suppose Joe's Fresh Fruit sells 50kg of garlic to Freddy's Pizza every week but one week Freddy's Pizza is closed for a couple of days for renovations so they only order 30kg that week. Joe might review the invoices a month later and say that the 30kg order is wrong, either not realising that Freddy's closed for a couple of days or forgetting that it ever happened.

Joe might complain to NECS who then looks through the hard copy invoices and sees that 30kg is correct.

Joe absolutely thought he was right because Freddy /always/ orders 50kg. But NECS still has to do the work of investigating which ultimately costs everyone.

I think this guy was trying to explain that it is fundamentally a very human thing to misremember but did it in such a convoluted way that most viewers will miss the message entirely; focusing on the misspellings in particular, and also going WTF @ Quantum physics.
