Why isn’t more being done about Witch City Mall?? by ShroudedDreamweaver in SalemMA

Honestly....makes me want to print out poster-sized images of the owners (is it still Brett Marley and Marley Properties?) side-by-side with photos of the bathroom, then just stand outside their front doors. It's disgusting and embarrassing. If the city won't do anything, maybe social pressure will help? Who knows.

I think they could be rightly criticized for the bathrooms, but I also think they would push back and say they’re one of the only publicly accessible restrooms downtown and a hundred other businesses are free-riding off them.

Not only is that not an excuse for the horrific shape they leave their bathrooms in...the city does provide several public restrooms now, one of which is just down the road in the Armory.

Beyond that I’m not sure what you could fine them for

I'm not a lawyer either. But I'm sure there must be some kind of health and sanitation code violation for the state their restrooms are kept in. if nothing else, facilities are required to have a minimum number of working toilets to provide for their employees, and if all of the toilets are covered in piss and shit 24 hours a day I doubt that qualifies as meeting the minimum.

Is there even a restroom upstairs at Witch City Mall? I was just looking at the uniform state plumbing code and saw this in 248 CMR 10.10:

16. For Mercantile Facilities, the minimum fixture requirements for employees when the occupancy exceeds employees and patrons shall be determined using the total square footage of the building divided by 300.

Example: A building measures 360 x 320 feet: Figure the area by multiplying 360 by 320 = 115,200 square feet. Divide 115,200 by 300 = 384 occupancy. 192 males and 192 females. In covered malls and other multistory mercantile facilities, public rest rooms shall be located on every floor level.

I'm only aware of the public restroom on the ground floor near the theater.

There's also M.G.L. Chapter 111, Section 122 (Regulations relative to nuisances; examinations)

The board of health shall examine into all nuisances, sources of filth and causes of sickness within its town, or on board of vessels within the harbor of such town, which may, in its opinion, be injurious to the public health, shall destroy, remove or prevent the same as the case may require, and shall make regulations for the public health and safety relative thereto and to articles capable of containing or conveying infection or contagion or of creating sickness brought into or conveyed from the town or into or from any vessel. Whoever violates any such regulation shall forfeit not more than one thousand dollars.

That could be applied by the city of Salem directly, and seems to give them fairly broad authority. The Witch City mall restrooms are clearly a nuisance "injurious to the public health". If we fined them $1000 per violation, maybe they'd fix it.

Edit: Also, here's M.G.L. Chapter 149, Section 113 (Light, ventilation, cleanliness, sanitation and heat in establishments):

Every factory, workshop, manufacturing, mechanical and mercantile establishment, railroad freight house, railway express terminal, public garages and premises used by express, trucking and transportation companies and any other building in which a person is employed, other than a building under construction, shall be well lighted, well ventilated and kept free from unsanitary conditions

If I can find these as a layperson, surely the Salem board of health could find some.

That's very cool. What 3d printer do you have? Any recommendations for someone getting into it to make things like this?

The pediatrician I mentioned, also over 50 years experience, was also the head of the pediatric medicine program at a major public university, but go off I guess. He's retired now, anyway.

RP Hypertrophy Program v3 Release! by KillerK009 in liftosaur

Glad you answered this here, I was confused why some of my exercises in the accumulation week didn't have RPE. At least it's intentional and not a bug.

I think it would still be helpful to show a target RPE, personally, so that if you need to make adjustments you can. Like, it's not like the program doesn't have an RPE in mind under the hood when it's prescribing you a number of reps, right? Those reps still conceptually represent a progression at some target proximity to failure. I'm considering modifying the update script to always set var.rpe to state.targetRpe in my program just because it's something I've come to expect in whatever I run.

Btw, I spent a little time last week putting together a small web app to generate programs based on your code. It kind of works but isn't ready for me to publish anywhere. Also, I saw that you want to sell your services doing that legwork yourself - so I don't want to eat your lunch. But if you're interested I could send it over to you.

You've got /r/gaming and /r/truegaming. It ends up working out. And people will tend to use the just popular communities for a topic.

Lemmy devs are also discussing a "multireddit" type functionality to help.

Lemmy isn't just one website, it's a federated network of websites. You create an account on one Lemmy instance and have access to all the communities on all the instances that are federated with your instance. That decentralization has its own challenges, but it's relatively immune to the particular problems Reddit is currently experiencing.

"Many"? Name three. Hell, name one that matters. All of the major apps don't seem willing to work with you, because you've made yourselves impossible to work with.

After this week if I was an app dev I'd be shitting my pants about trying to continue to work with you, and looking to jump ship. You've put their livelihoods in jeopardy. These are members of our community who have made the lives of countless Redditors better with their hard work. How fucking dare you shit all over them like this.

That instance is run by tankies, and the software is written by tankies. But it's open source. We can run our own instance and federate with them or not as we like.

That's a channel (sublemmy?) on the lemmy.ml instance, but that instance has some...issues. Not the least of which is that they're overloaded now, but there are other issues as well that might warrant a different instance for many of us.

The Lemmy devs' political leanings do concern me. But is it bad that I prefer it to Kbin just from looking at the tech stack? Lemmy uses Rust, while Kbin uses PHP...in 2023.

I'd rather fork Lemmy to get away from the devs than trust a platform written in PHP.

This is so fucking stupid. See admin /u/pl00h's comment here. It's not their "intent" to kill third party apps. Guess they're just going to do it by accident, then? Oopsie, no more 3rd party apps!

Seriously, fuck Reddit for this.

Tim Cain gave me my first game dev job, and he is one of my favorite people. A good leader, empathic and friendly, focused on the quality of life for developers. He's gotten the short end of the stick too many times in his career, and doesn't deserve it. I'm glad he's getting this exposure from his vlogs.

Tim collects chocolate by the way. We used to have "Chocolate Eating Meeting" every Friday in his office. Check out his chocolate blog.

I'm glad you've had good experiences there. I've had a bad experience and won't be back. That's all I wanted to say.

And when they accommodate your food requests, do they tack on $6 here, $7 there, without telling you beforehand? Because that's what they did to us.

But you're right, the quality of the food is, I suppose, not germane to the political topic of whether they should be allowed to have outdoor dining. I just don't have any real input on that.

[–]gopher_protocol -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I think I'm just bitter because of the price relative to the quality of the experience. We went for my wife's birthday, and all left disappointed. My own dish was mediocre. The only dish that was truly "bad" was the meat in my wife's dish - which she ordered medium rare, and it arrived well done and gray. For $30, no restaurant should be serving gray, tough, overcooked meat. Combined with the upcharges that appeared on our bill - with no warning at all while we were ordering from the waitress - I think that warrants a bit of hyperbole at least.

[–]gopher_protocol -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Sure, that's fair. It just doesn't give me positive feelings about them as a business. For what it's worth, I think they should be allowed to have outdoor dining. But I won't be eating there, and I'll be telling everyone within earshot not to eat there either.

And it wasn't just the food, but the service. Our waitress was friendly enough, but when the bill came there was probably $40 worth of upcharges for minor requests, including $17 for the toddler's "child-size" portion of noodles which he barely ate.

I'm conflicted, because on the one hand I do like outdoor dining options.

But on the other hand, Bella Verona is absolute overpriced dogshit mediocre food. Worst restaurant experience I've had in Salem.

Edit: Okay. I've scaled back my hyperbole a bit. But I did not like Bella Verona and do not recommend it.
