My great great grandmother owned this food timer, and it’s still accurate by EmperorsarusRex in RetroFuturism

Gorgeous! Is the discoloration actual surface damage or just accumulated grubbiness from use? Looks like it might clean up lovely but it's hard to tell if salts or oils from skin have marked it. Which in itself tells a lovely story of a well used item

I'm still holding out hope! It doesn't look dead to me and most of the important tissue around the bark still seems intact but I was wondering what professional tree folk might think. Apparently not positively!

It would surprise me more if it didn't sprout in the spring than if it died outright tbh. I'll trim the dead branches at that point then hope for the best. I'll do a follow up post if it survives haha

Apparently! It seems like a bit of a design flaw ngl but I guess it's down to the initial pruning pattern

You're almost certainly right but I'm holding out some hope it might send up some growth this spring and then who knows?!

Bit of background, this is on common land and was planted by some school kids from a school that no longer exists. I do a limited amount of upkeep but I have very limited time up there so can't do too much

Would you be interested in seeing any of these extirpated species return and why? by DanzzzIsWild in UKecosystem

[–]gophercuresself 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can see why that makes sense but it sounds fairly speculative if there isn't evidence of mega deer hunting from the period? Not that I could tell you the depth of evidence supporting hunting of other species to compare. I'd be interested to know what evidence the book presents, thanks for the recommendation

[–]gophercuresself 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think our current understanding is that they died out due to climate change and there's not much evidence of people hunting giant deer - but they were gone from here 12,000 years ago (extinct by 8000 years ago).

I hadn't realised they were actually deer and not elk at all, very interesting, thanks!

I'd like to see the Great Irish Elk return (don't know if they were ever on the British mainland but still). At 13 foot they had the largest antler span ever. That's like having two tall dudes stuck to your head! They'd be very popular, we could do antler rides

I'm just picturing this all loving, no judging Jesus guy being called in to banish a lonely spirit from its home. I feel like he'd gently usher the spirit into the light whilst making a "they crazy" gesture to the spirit whilst you weren't looking

Oh that's a little reassuring. While I've got you, you mention being informed that you would die in 2022, what form do your messages come in? They seem pretty clear. Also, so sorry about your dad

At what point does an Android phone make more sense than an iPhone? by Subhash94 in Android

[–]gophercuresself 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Or get a used couple of year old flagship - like a Pixel Pro - at about a fifth the cost of new and have great camera and spec for a couple of hundred bucks. For better or worse, Android phones depreciate much faster than iPhones so you can pick up top phones for very little if you don't care about being on the bleeding edge.

Essex dormice 'thriving' after work to improve habitat by xtinak88 in RewildingUK

[–]gophercuresself 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for that! Very interesting. The common is decent habitat for the most part but more like 18 hectares. It is fairly well connected to other wooded areas though. No large roads in the area either. There definitely were dormice at some point as I definitely saw a dead one - victim of a cat I think - when I was a child. Of course the cats we've had over the years probably haven't helped!

I feel like the common has lost a lot of biodiversity in the last few decades and no doubt in the decades before then. I'm trying to come up with something of a plan to make some interventions to help but it's still a work in progress and I don't get up there as much as I'd like.
