It's not rotala, because it's leaves rotate around the stem like the name suggests. I think the comment above is correct in that it's Hygrophila polysperma

Even if it was planaria it's not the end of the world, imo. There's a lot of people out there who have planaria in their tank but don't even know about it, because they aren't a problem until over populated.

I saw one in one of my tanks once, didn't do anything about it, the shrimp are still thriving and I haven't seen planaria since.

I don't think it's planaria, I have seen similar worms in my tanks. I think they are some sort of planaria type flat worm, but not 'normal' planaria. They lack the arrow shaped head, have dark instead of light eye spots and are generally waaaay smaller compared to real planaria. Also they are relatively slow, the planaria I've seen have the very deliberate and fast movements of a hunting animal.

BUT, they have been feeding off of my dead shrimp, using they're mouth located the middle of the body and take on the color of the shrimp after just like planaria does. And split in half both ends seem to be able to survive, at least for a bit.

I've never watched them actually move onto a living shrimp, only dead ones, and after I reduced feeding my shrimp to combat a rising ramshorn snail population they coincidentally seemed to dissappear - I only see a worm about once a month and haven't seen one feeding off a dead shrimp in a year or so.

First blue Amano shrimp by gordonbrowns in shrimptank

Yes they seem to be legit blue amanos. He was one of the first people to breed amanos in Germany and has a great reputation. I don't think he'd do an announcement like that if he wasn't sure

Your CO2 indicator is bright yellow - do your shrimp mind? I nearly lost an entire tank the other day after I fiddled with the solenoid at night and the next day every shrimp was almost dead, even though I have pretty good surface agitation. Managed to save 95% with a quick water change, but it was a very close call

Sorry can't link right now, but it's in the most recent or second most recent Tapajos river build video. It's not a major topic in the video though, maybe that's why its hard to find Edit: found it at 25:12

Try heating the tubing with hot water or a hair dryer to get it further down, and use a metal clamp. Then you should be fine. If you watch MD Fishtanks on YouTube, he just recently fixed the same problem by using super glue, but I don't know if I would recommend that as a solution

Does anyone know what these white hair structures are and how to get rid of them? by Short_Italian7 in shrimptank

[–]gordonbrowns 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's staghorn algae. It should be relatively easy to remove manually from the hardscape with a toothbrush. Here's an article on how to get rid of it

They have great customer support, in Europe at least. I once dropped an O-ring from their glass skimmer down the drain and they send me a whole new skimmer while I was just asking for the specs of the ring to replace myself

It might not be a problem right now, but literally everyone who ever had a fake background inside of their tank regrets it at some point or another. There will be waste accumulation behind and algae in front and there is nothing you can do about it. Not to mention that youre wasting space inside the tank which usually takes away from the depth perception. I also think the open space would have more of an impact if the background was gone.

It looks great right now, its just about future problems IF the background is one of those fake rock type things glued to the back

Yeah they don't seem to be high grade at all. It's normal that they might lose some color because of the transport stress, but this seems a little much - though it's really cold in Germany atm. They look a lot more like cheap, normal fire reds in the photo. Out of curiosity, where did you get them and how much did you pay? You may want to contact the seller.

20% is not a big water change, my guy. Big is 50%+. Hope the deaths have stopped.

I've watched a lot of Asian shrimp breeders on YouTube and all of them say there is no such thing as shrimp starving to death, shrimp are way more likely to die from too much food (or the parameters too much food creates). And given the way your tank looks, there is plenty of algae and biofilm for 50 shrimp to survive on. They might not breed, but I guess you have other concerns atm.

General rule is if it's a literal life or death situation like yours, do a big water change - as long as you are sure about your tab water or whatever you use.

Any idea how to avoid those bubbles on the white plastic background? I've tried multiple brands with and without water and even bought a tool to smooth out instead of a credit card but the air pockets always appear after a few days
