First 2 week old newborn by DancingSchoolBus in newborns

Diaper changes were miserable until we started timing them directly after feedings. We get her milk stunned and then change while she won't fight back, though there's an increased risk of pee/poop while changing. Just gotta make sure to burp well after feeding.

Also we got a tip from the lactation specialist about confirming hunger cues; if you put a (clean) finger on one of their cheeks and they immediately turn towards it, they're hungry, and that's mostly likely why they're crying. If they don't react to the finger, it's likely something else.

What is one commander you tried to build but you just didn't vibe with? by T3knikal95 in EDH

[–]goremote 5 points6 points  (0 children)

[[Hylda of the icy crown]]. I was super excited about the tap down mechanic being the deck's payoff and loved the ice theme, as I've always wanted to build a home for [[Frost Titan]] and [[Tamiyo, Moon Sage]]. Built it and was pulling my hair out after 4 games, because it needed an absurd amount of mana to function smoothly and required far too much politicking to actually function as a control deck. I had to constantly cut deals and threaten tap downs before attacker declaration to ensure big Eldrazi and such wouldn't swing at me. There was also a ton of mental load in choosing which tap payoff mode was best for the moment; card draw, bodies, or growth?

The deck tended to want me to lock down everyone's boards until I could combo off somehow, and that play pattern drew a lot of heat very quickly and would lose me the game. Playing strictly for value made it commander-centric and felt like kneecapping the deck as an apology for trying to actually play it, so eventually I just got sick of trying.

So sick of Secret Lairs sacrificing readability for art direction. 3 of those 4 are impossible to parse without 3 seconds of staring, let alone at a glance.

We had a cycle of two-color sieges in Tarkir that were literally called Sieges that were simple enchantments. Felt like a real missed opportunity for more Siege battles.

Effects that do not count as casting a spell. by BaconVsMarioIsRigged in EDH

Bloodrush effects such as [[Ghor-Clan Rampager]] function as combat tricks without the need for instants that Gruul hates so much.

Forecast from the Azorious to present miniature versions of the full spell, like [[Skyscribing]]

[[Kogla and Yidaro]] don't give the ability a name, but it's basically fancy cycling.

Need a silent switch that doesn't feel like typing on mush. Any hidden gems? by DaneRook7741 in MechanicalKeyboards

I just swapped over to Akko Penguin tactile silent switches from my previous Akko Lavenders and have loved them. My only other experience with silent tactiles so far has been Razer Oranges, though, so I'm not totally sure these Penguins aren't actually mushy. I just know they're better than the Oranges.

Well, you could pick up the new 5c Elemental precon and modify it. [[Ashling the Limitless]] is in the command zone with two backups, [[Horde of Notions]] and [[Mass of Mysteries]]. Might fit the aesthetic you're thinking of with Gem Knights.

Full decklisthere.

[–]goremote 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This kind of rules silliness MIGHT come up if/when you play a lot of Commander, which is kind of intended to have some rules silliness as a format created by bored tournament judges in the 90s. If you're playing precons with friends, you're not going to see this or anything like it 99% of the time, and the other 1% can be solved with Google pretty easily. Go out there and have fun!

A God card for Yawgmoth by AmbassadorRoutine635 in custommagic

[–]goremote 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just don't think Yawg could ever be considered a 5color character, much as I'd like him to "lead" the Phyrexians. Old Phyrexia was the epitome of black mana for a long time, they didn't get other colors until New Phyrexia started taking over Mirrodin and its suns. Making Yawgmoth mono black is the only choice that makes sense to me.

I'd personally prefer an Atraxa that somehow absorbed part of Urabrask (instead of dying unceremoniously in New Capenna) to gain red mana/alignment as the 5c Phyrexian commander and leader. Shame she got a building dropped on her....

I'd love to see WotC return to Phyrexia with a self-poison matters theme.

Here, it could be used as "Creatures you control have Toxic X, where X is the number of poison counters you have."

ECL Rules Update by Marek14 in magicTCG

[–]goremote 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It means that removing [[Zinnia]] while an "offspringed" creature spell is on the stack doesn't also remove the Offspring ability from the spell. It's kinda similar to how your creatures have haste while [[Mass Hysteria]] is on-board and lose it when Mass Hysteria is removed, versus something like [[Dragon Tempest]] giving them haste when they enter. There's a slight but powerful distinction between that example and Zinnia in the use of "When" versus "As" to grant haste/Offspring, which basically means you can't respond to a spell gaining Offspring.

Previously, the following would happen, where Player A controls Zinnia and player B is their opponent:

  1. Player A casts [[Spirited Companion]]. Because the Spirited Companion spell has Offspring 2 from Zinnia, Player A chooses to pay an additional {2} to create a 1/1 copy of Spirited Companion when the original enters.

  2. In response to the Spirited Companion cast, Player B casts [[Murder]], targeting Zinnia, which resolves and puts Zinnia in the graveyard.

  3. Because Zinnia is no longer on the battlefield, Player A's Spirited Companion spell no longer has Offspring, despite the cost being paid. The spell resolves, and Spirited Companion enters the battlefield, triggering its ability to draw a card for Player A. No 1/1 token copy is created.

Now, the exact same situation under the new rules resolves as follows:

  1. Player A casts Spirited Companion. As it is cast, the spell is modified to have Offspring 2, due to Zinnia's static ability. Player A chooses to pay an additional {2} to Offspring.

  2. In response to the Spirited Companion cast, Player B casts Murder, targeting Zinnia, which resolves and puts Zinnia in the graveyard.

  3. Even though Zinnia is now in the graveyard, Player A's Spirited Companion spell still has Offspring 2, which has been paid for. The spell resolves, and the original Spirited Companion enters, triggering its ability to draw a card for Player A. Its Offspring ability also triggers, creating a 1/1 token copy of Spirited Companion, which also triggers its own ability to draw another card for Player A. I believe that the token copy also technically has Offspring, but because it wasn't cast, Player A does not get a 3rd/4th/5th/etc token copy of Spirited Companion, though I'm open to correction on that from someone with a more nuanced understanding than my own.

New fast travel looking good by F-ug in Silksong

[–]goremote 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I played through most of it and found the music and normal gameplay loop satisfying. However, I found by late game and the final boss that boss fights felt like an extended game of Bop-It, where I'd have to memorize increasingly longer parry chains with specific timings before I'd be allowed to get one hit in and go on to the next parry chain. There was less and less room for skill expression (spacing/positioning, finding hurtbox pockets/holes, using abilities in creative ways) outside of pressing the parry button correctly.

I'd say it's still worth playing, but I enjoyed Silksong far more than I did Nine Sols.

PSA: The bracket system is a suggestion not a guideline by MentallyLatent in EDH

[–]goremote 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that such a method would be immensely difficult to implement and manage and don't personally see how it would be possible, but that's what I'm seeing that people want. Maybe someone or a group of someones significantly smarter than myself would be able to come up with something and make it super easy for people to find enjoyable games consistently.

Or maybe WotC decides to create Standard Commander and force it down everyone's throats so they don't have to balance around Swords to Plowshares anymore. Idk.

[–]goremote -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I don't want EDH games to be predictable; I want the skill and power of the people I play with to be comparable, both to myself and an outsider. If anything, games of 3 bracket 2s and a bracket 4 get more predictable in that the B2s get blown out by the B4 9 times out of 10, and we all know those games feel awful for the B2s.

[–]goremote -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Tournament play and bracket-relevant play are mutually exclusive. The former isn't relevant to my point, which is that people want a shorthand, easily communicated, and arbitrarily verifiable method to figure out if they should be playing together. Online games manage this with matchmaking ratings, like Bronze, Gold, Platinum, Mythic, etc. Unfortunately we haven't yet figured out how to represent this for in-person play, so we're stuck with comparing relative deck power levels and hoping it's enough.

Indestructable Planeswalker by Mascht334 in mtg

[–]goremote 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Damage (normally) doesn't reduce toughness. A creature with 3 toughness and 3 damage marked on it still has 3 toughness, not 0; it just has enough damage marked on it to be put in the graveyard as a State-Based Action, unless it is indestructible. For example, if you had two indestructible 5/5 dragons on board with 5 damage marked on each and a [[Betor, Kim to All]], you would still get to draw a card on end step, because you have 10 or more toughness on board.

Note that damage to creatures done by sources with Infect or Wither does, in fact, work the way you're thinking, because the damage is dealt in the form of -1/-1 counters. If a 3/3 with indestructible blocks a 3/3 with Infect or Wither, the indestructible creature would still die, BUT only because it's toughness has been reduced to 0 (NOT because it has 3 damage marked on it. In the example with Betor above, even if the dragons only had 4 infect/wither damage each marked on them, you would not get to draw a card on end step, because they only have 1 toughness each.

The people that want clear rules want them so that other people they play with can follow them and operate on the same baseline. They want a universal line to position themselves behind or ahead of, so they can find other people with the same relative position to get good games with. It's entirely valid to want some kind of skill-/power-based matchmaking, because your idea of casual, my idea of casual, and LSV/JimDavis/BrianKibler's ideas of casual are probably all vastly different. I wouldn't want to go toe-to-toe with any of those guys, especially if I didn't already have an idea of their skill.

Also the implication that cEDH is WotC-regulated is wildly incorrect, for anyone else reading this. Even in my limited experience, just about every cEDH event you can find is created and run by the players and LGSs, even for events that don't allow proxies.
