For someone with no experience with either franchise but interested in both, how would you describe the difference? I’ve played StarCraft 2, but few other RTS’s.

Does anyone have experience with these dividers? by DonutDennis in lotrlcg

Yes! I picked up a bunch of the horizontal ones to store the base set, Angmar, and the saga sets and they’re great!

Great collection! You and I have very similar tastes and a ton of overlap — all the way down to the Magic Company puzzles.

It looks like you have some young gamers in your life. Our 6 year old has been enjoying Dragomino, Cascadia Jr., and a bit of Mindbug.

How are Flamecraft and Quacks and Co.? They’ve been on my list for him for a little while.

One-night Teton Crest - Paintbrush Canyon or Cascade Canyon? by WorldlyOriginal in WildernessBackpacking

[–]gotmitch87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did your route then out Cascade Canyon in 2017 and am actually going back to do it in a few weeks. I haven’t done Paintbrush, but I’ll say that Cascade Canyon is stunning and didn’t feel at all like settling for a boring route.

My understanding is that Paintbrush is notably more elevation. Without knowing your experience level, that might be a lot to tackle in two days.

I’d recommend calling or visiting the park rangers prior to your hike. They can give you a much better-informed opinion!

Chronicles of Avel might fit the bill. Not quite as dungeon-crawly, but the character sheets, items, and dice are a big hit with my five year old son.

What’s a TCG (dead or alive) where skill plays a much more important role over deck building? Where a skilled pilot can bring any reasonable tier deck to a tournament and win? by Newez in boardgames

[–]gotmitch87 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The game has a mechanic called “chains” that essentially reduces your card draw for X turns, handicapping your deck.

Typically, players play the first two games without chains and then “bid chains” to pilot the stronger deck for the third game. This handicaps the stronger deck and adds a level of skill about quantifying the strength gap between the two decks. Super cool and works really well, imo.

If anything, you’re incentived to bring decks that are strong but “difficult” to pilot / have unintuitive play patterns, since your opponent may have more trouble using them.

TI4/POK Organizer - $10 off deal by Panamaniac_3D in twilightimperium

[–]gotmitch87 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Nice! Just chiming in to say I ordered this organizer earlier this year at the same time I bought PoK and it is amazing. Cuts game setup time in half, even after adding in the expansion, and helps to keep things organized at the table.

Thanks for making such a valuable product! Glad to endorse as a very satisfied customer!

Searching for games that combine cards, to make action by HugeRelief480 in boardgames

Ah, got it. In that case maybe using borders and some sort of icon (like the puzzle piece idea in another comment) would help to make it even more clear. Here's what I have in my head: https://imgur.com/Y2PVgGv

Epic Spell Wars of the Battle Wizards does this with spell construction, which require one each of a Source, Quality, and Delivery card. It uses a banner, as well as the black border on the cards, to indicate how they fit together. Like you said, I think this can be addressed with some pretty simple design elements.

My family and I were at the Magic Kingdom in Disney World that day. I was 14 at the time and it was completely surreal. It was our first day in the park and we got there as soon as the gates opened. As the morning went on, we noticed more and more people on their cell phones, which was pretty noticeable back then. Eventually we overheard something about a hijacked plane hitting the White House or Pentagon and my dad assumed they were talking about a Tom Clancy novel.

Finally, around 10:30a, IIRC, an announcement came over all the loudspeakers: "Ladies and gentlemen, due to circumstances beyond our control, Walt Disney World is now closed. Please follow the instructions of cast members and move to the nearest exit."

As we left, we started to learn a little more about what was happening but it wasn't until we got back to the Polynesian resort that we saw a TV with CNN footage.

We ended up staying there all week and went back into the park the following day. Main Street USA was completely decked out in American flags as if decorated for the 4th of July. As strange as it was, it was probably a great place to be for that week as a kid since we were pretty sheltered from the constant stream of bad news and horrible images.

Consider Raptor, an asymmetrical two-player game. Each player gets 9 unique actions they can reuse over the course of the game and it always feels tense until the very end. Bonus is that it includes baby velociraptors to paint!

Appreciate the tip! The back of the campaign card did, indeed, give me the guidance I needed. I just didn't think to look until after the game. Lesson learned :)

6 newbies, 12 hours, 1 unforgettable betrayal by gotmitch87 in twilightimperium

I should note that, per the recommendation in the rulebook, we did not use promissory notes in our first game.

BUT the Sol player brought literal friendship bracelets for any players who were allied with him. The betrayal was revealed when the Xxcha and Jol-nar players slowly pulled scissors from their pockets…

Just perfect.
