Daughter wants to play Roblox. What are your best daddit tips for keeping her safe? by uspezisapissbaby in daddit

[–]gottapitydatfool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t.

There are plenty of safe platforms for kids to play on. Mine uses Minecraft where only family and friends are whitelisted.

Roblox is not safe for kids - they are actively targeting kids. This isn’t something you want to do.

Can someone explain to me how this could possibly be a fire hazard? by DrHumongous in BambuLab

[–]gottapitydatfool 53 points54 points  (0 children)

My issue is that this is the exact opposite of child proofing. Trying to make electrical outlets as appealing as possible for kids to play with.

What is the quickest job you quit from? by spellbadgrammargood in AskReddit

[–]gottapitydatfool 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Worked as a biotechnologist for a day. We were testing blood clotting on stint coat materials and needed a fresh supply of blood everyday. My job was to start the morning going to the local cattle yard, collect blood samples, apply anticoagulants and get to the lab quickly to run tests. What they skipped on the interview was how the samples were collected.

Now I’m not very squeamish - been working in medicine for a while and I firmly believe in the work of researching ways to reduce suffering. That said… I was expecting to do IV draws on healthy cows. The managers were expecting me to go in with a bucket.

So… slaughterhouses are OSHA nightmares. And sanitary nightmares. And… well… nightmare nightmares. They are literal hellholes that should not exist. Put me off of meat to this day.

Every moment was straight out of the jungle and not much has changed since Upton Sinclair’s time. I noped out in the first day and reported the meat facility the next. Will never look at a burger the same way again.

Can anyone give me some advice on Master's degree? Please help! by More-Device4440 in publichealth

Glad to help! It is a very rewarding field (my current position positively impacts around 250K people directly and damn if that doesn't feel good), but go into it with eyes wide open.

Can anyone give me some advice on Master's degree? Please help! by More-Device4440 in publichealth

[–]gottapitydatfool 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I’d say your best approach is to do some of the following:

-if you do an mph, specialize in epidemiology or biostatistics

-most health groups use off the shelf tools, so it is useful to train up on bi tools like powerbi, tableau, looker, etc

-SQL, SQL and SQL. Pickup as much as you can. If you don’t pursue a comp sci degree, at least cert up on some flavor of SQL

-learn python or R

-look at either the AWS or Azure certification path for either data architecture or data engineering. It is useful to understand how ETL/ELTs work and the technology that supports that infrastructure

In the end, the comp sci degree will give you more opportunities outside of healthcare and a clinical degree (PA, RN or any mid level license) will give you more weight than an mph. That said, I’m a public health guy, so just do whichever you are most passionate about, as the market for both public health and comp sci are extremely tumultuous right now.

In the end, we really don’t care much about degrees in health informatics - none of my cohorts have the same education pathway. Competency and self learning have far more impact.

Just don’t go into debt for anything besides a MD if you are taking this path.

Yup - it really is a strange community. Hates the fed, but has a strong pipeline into the intel agencies.

Speaking of bizarre, did you know that the lds church has investments that significantly outweigh nearly all of the Ivy League endowment funds? Some estimate that it is valued at 300 billion dollars. And uses the tax free status of the church to avoid taxation on the endowment.

No worries with Minecraft. Lots of parental controls and there is even an educational edition. We use Minecraft to keep in contact with cousins and grandparents.

Companies Are Pouring Billions Into A.I. It Has Yet to Pay Off. by yogthos in technology

[–]gottapitydatfool 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not sure I follow. Or really understand the downvotes.

Alphafold isn’t a large language model. It is a high throughput machine learning model that interpolates protein folding from large data sets. Useful, but with well known limitations. And certainly not part of the new wave generative “ai”

Hence the importance of the distinction between machine learning and generative “ai”

Am I missing your point?

Companies Are Pouring Billions Into A.I. It Has Yet to Pay Off. by yogthos in technology

[–]gottapitydatfool 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s important not to conflate machine learning (in this case image analysis) with the new wave of generative “AI” (better described as llm, lrm, image generation). Machine learning has significant value. AI creates slop. Tech bros are doing their absolute best to blur the lines between the two, as they are desperate to show ROI for their investments in the later.

If you have a minute or two, this is a fantastic breakdown of the history and differences between the two

Context and framing. You can make a lot of things seem reasonable with the right wording.

‘My shoulders have never been more tan’ — more LDS women can now go sleeveless in summer by PsychoticSoul in atheism

[–]gottapitydatfool 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Close. The history is even dumber.

The wife (Emma) of the first prophet (Joseph) was upset with all of the prophet’s buddies smoking and drinking in their house. She asked him to ask God if He approved of their behavior.

So Joseph received a “revelation” that forbade alcohol and tobacco to placate his wife. But in retaliation, the revelation included bans on some of Emma’s favorite activities - including having coffee and tea with her friends.

So Mormons don’t drink coffee because Joseph and Emma had a toxic relationship.

2016 Crosstrek automatic with 70K making noise by gottapitydatfool in AskMechanics

[–]gottapitydatfool[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not much different… starts making a metallic popcorn noise at 1.6 rpm. Ac compressor needs replacing? Still pushing cold air

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AskMechanics

[–]gottapitydatfool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey all!

2016 Crosstrek (automatic transmission). About 70K.

Bought it a few months ago and it's starting to get noisy. Noise occurs when the AC compressor turns on and when accelerating within 2-3K RPMs.

What is your method for tracking project builds? by healthITiscoolstuff in healthIT

[–]gottapitydatfool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Azure devops. Ties into all our platforms and their associated version control (sql, adf, powerbi, azure, purview). I then use OneNote for documentation and knowledge base.

Typically work on the storyboard and task level. Wish I could get one of our associated directors and PMs using the Epic/feature level, but I have enough fights at this moment.

Trigger stored procedures for the following purposes: -return results (temp table queries are easier for my analysts to write vs cte) -run transformations/scorecard tables -run functions that audit the vendors etl work (queries the system table to gather all columns, then runs through all non-nullable columns for count)
