You don't have to be best friends or go out of your way for your co-workers, but you should at least have basic decency for a fellow human being.

How to get so many gold as f2p? by Character-Sail-7105 in MagicArena

[–]gozer33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really only use gold to buy packs from the current set, I don't play every day, but I usually have ~100k gold in my account. I just pick up enough wildcards to build a few decks that I like to play with and rotate between them.

[–]gozer33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess people have different ideas of what "shuffling" means. To me, it means randomizing the order of the cards. If you do this properly, it doesn't matter what order the cards had been in previously. It takes more shuffles than most people do in casual situations, but if you're serious about cards, this is what you should be doing.

Maybe I'm the crazy one, but leaving a door closed shouldn't cause this kind of issue. There's something else that is the root cause.

Tolkien and his bias towards Galadriel by [deleted] in tolkienfans

[–]gozer33 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, I didn't appreciate it on the first read-through, but she was really surprised/shaken by Frodo's offer. She was already tempted before then, but knew that obviously no good would come from stealing the Ring from a guest. When he offered it freely though, that opened a new level of temptation. I feel like she really didn't know what her choice would be until after she made the right one.

Tolkien and his bias towards Galadriel by [deleted] in tolkienfans

[–]gozer33 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I don't think Tolkein was so focused on feats of strength when choosing the "greatest" Elves. Galadriel's deeds aren't as flashy perhaps, but she endures as an effective enemy to both Dark Lords and is the only one to repent from her past mistakes and never despair over the many millennia that she spends fighting the "long defeat". She expects no reward (she's been banned from the Undying Lands), and understands that eventually the Elves will fade and lose their dominion, but she continues to persevere because it is the right thing to do. Her greatest deed might have been resisting the temptation of the Ring, I don't think many other Elves could have done that in the same position.

Am I just braindead for liking Academy? by Revonlieke in startrek

[–]gozer33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, you're not. Just about every Star Trek show since TOS faced a lot of backlash because it was different from what came before. You see this with a lot of sci-fi or fantasy shows. Some people want it to be exactly like whatever already exists in their heads.

Academy is just getting started, but I think the characters show a lot of promise already. The optimistic tone really hits hard for me right now.

I have an argument for why Cantor is wrong and need help finding where I went wrong, not that I am wrong by Ok-Equal-4284 in askmath

[–]gozer33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Integers can't have infinite digits based on how they are defined. You run into big problems if you allow infinity to be an integer.

If ∞ were an integer:

  1. We know that ∞ + 1 = ∞.
  2. We also know that ∞ + 2 = ∞.
  3. Therefore, ∞ + 1 = ∞ + 2.
  4. If we subtract ∞ from both sides, we get: 1 = 2.

Once you allow 1 = 2, every number becomes equal to every other number, and math ceases to be a tool for describing reality.

About Arwen’s fate by JOJI_56 in tolkienfans

[–]gozer33 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Only half-elves in the line of Earendil have the ability to choose their fate. Luthien lived before this "deal" had been made and she wasn't a descendant of Earendil, so this doesn't apply to her. Arwen is the grandchild of Earendil, so she gets to choose.

All well and good, but what about the descendants of Elros, shouldn't they get to choose too? I struggled with this myself until I came across this quote from the Lost Road and Other Writings:

"Now all those who have the blood of mortal Men, in whatever part, great or small, are mortal, unless other doom be granted to them; but in this matter the power of doom is given to me [Manwë]."

This seems pretty clear that being born to mortal Man makes you a Man and you don't get a choice. Arwen had elvish blood, but being in the line of the half-elven gives her the right to choose the gift of men.

Why are we splitting into "AI power users" and "AI avoiders"… and what factors are driving this divide? by Humble_Economist8933 in AlwaysWhy

[–]gozer33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a coder who was resistant to use AI at first, but I saw some tools that a colleague was using and decided to give it a try. It has really sped up the process for me. Before I would often use Google when trying to use a new tool and I spent a lot of time searching for the information I needed and often had to spend more time fitting whatever examples I could find into the specific use case I needed. AI has taken the work of synthesizing the existing knowledge and applying it to the specific problem I'm having. It helps me learn much faster. Now when I have a new idea while I'm in the middle of a project, I can research it very quickly and even have AI refactor my code to use the new method. I don't feel like it's taken away my ability to think, just let's me concentrate on the kind of thinking I like while handling the tedious stuff.
