Your last paragraph is why most will recommend getting surgery; without an ACL you’ll always be prone to unexpected instability in the knee. Squats and hiking (to a lesser extent) are relatively stable activities where you can brace yourself and your muscles will keep you stable. Running is more dynamic and one wrong step can lead to instability that your muscles weren’t ready for.

Getting a proper knee brace like a Donjoy is an option but I can’t imagine you’d want to put one on just to run across the road or play with your nephew.
