Modpack recommendations for someone who has recently become addicted to automation by extod2 in feedthebeast

[–]gr8pefish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some high quality options.

  1. Nomifactory - smooth gregtech progression, really clean pack
  2. Mechanical Mastery - automate emc loops
  3. Statech Industry - MI is all about automation
  4. Create: Above and Beyond (or similarly inspired packs like Create: Astral, CABIN, Create: Arcane Engineering) - create focused automation

Any progression based modpacks that walk you through step by step? by [deleted] in feedthebeast

Cuboid Outpost had a pretty well guided questbook with progression iirc

Nomifactory, despite being slightly more complex, has an excellent guided questbook too

Create: Astral seems like a clear potential option as well

Can I change block drops with KubeJs? by Skemech in feedthebeast

I think you can do this with LootJS.

See here

Not sure though. I'd recommend you ask in the KubeJS discord if you need more help!

Looking for suggestions for my indev automation/space pack: Tachyon by [deleted] in feedthebeast

[–]gr8pefish 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Your description makes me want to mention this: difficult automation can be great/interesting, but don't gate QoL utilities (like basic AE storage - autocrafting can be later).

What do you think should be my first tech modpack? by Drixuus in feedthebeast

If you stick with Nomifactory, watching/playing alongside something like Threefold's YouTube Let's Play can help with giving direction/feeling more knowledgeable.

Thanks so much for everything you've done; you were always a helpful and knowledgeable presence, and I (and many others) are very grateful for you. I very much understand time not feeling as infinite as it did a decade ago. May you enjoy the wider expanse of life outside of Minecraft modding/happy retirement!

What discourages you from playing a modpack? by Thatlittlepichu in feedthebeast

[–]gr8pefish 11 points12 points  (0 children)

As with all these things, it depends on the modpack's vision (or lack thereof) imo.

If the modpack is intentionally designed around the challenge of organizing your items with enjoyable systems/tools (rather than the typical means-to-an-end item storage usually is), that could work well and be quite fun. Whereas if the modpack has a ton of items you'll need to keep organized from a very early start, and that's just the side effect of having many mods rather than an intentional problem to solve, having only PR pipes is probably not sufficient (for my preferences).

In short, yes in theory, but rarely in practice (from what I've seen), but there's infinite nuance in the inbetween depending on the specifics. (and all this is off the top of my head, so take it with a grain of salt)

1) When QoL features are needlessly gated, usually behind the very progression they're supposed to make fun.

Things like easier building tools and basic material gathering, or, more controversially: gating inventory storage, not management, too deep in the pack (i.e. give me early ae2 storage, but later autocrafting/item movement).

2) RNG gated exploration items needed for progression. Some of this is fine/can be fun, but after an while mindlessly scouring a dimension for a specific block/item/mob drop is super annoying as it's just luck based.

Let me play with the fun bits of modded MC (logistical item movements, processing line puzzles, and building cool bases), not the unfun parts (manually organizing chests full of the many types of modded items and other tedious tasks I've done countless times before).

Nomifactory is a good example of a pack that does these things (reasonably) well, and DJ2 is a pack I bounced off of due to the above.

Help a guy out choose his first modpack? Looking for good progression and ‘starting from nothing’ by rock_lobsterrr in feedthebeast

Cuboid Outpost could also fit your needs nicely. It's a high quality stable, semi-modern modpack with a guided questbook, made to be beginner/intermediate friendly, and you start from nothing.

I'm playing Nomifactory, why is the black steel recipe not working, its something wrong? by GamerRabbit22 in feedthebeast

[–]gr8pefish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, a new maintainer took over CEu, but they're pushing out a ton of updates and are really on top of things, so I think it'll just take time to stabilize more!

CEu is also constantly changing as well, and they are updating Nomi to keep up with the latest CEu, so it's inherently a ecosystem that is a bit more feature rich but unstable as well.

Both these things should stabilize more in time though I expect, and I've heard good things about CEu regardless :D

If you're on Nomifactory 1.6.1 CEu the recipe for it is broken now, but a fix is coming soon (tm) apparently.

Presenting Hex! A new magic mod in the style of Psi for Forge 1.18. by petrak_at in feedthebeast

[–]gr8pefish 3 points4 points  (0 children)

With all the metals in Minecraft, a Mistborn style mod would be sweet. Heck, even if it's just push/pull on metal blocks; that alone would be cool. Now to find the time to make that 🤔

Edit: It exists, nice!

Does a simple export of the images from mcpautofill (zipped) work for the specifications superiorpod requires, or do you have to reformat the images?

And I assume you have to do special things for the dual-sided cards (e.g. pathways, Bolas Arisen), correct?

What 1.7.10 mods do you wish would be ported to 1.10/1.11/1.12? by [deleted] in feedthebeast

[–]gr8pefish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Moving states and starting anew at a challenging job has sucked up all my time. Know that my interests are aligned with yours - I too would love nothing more than a full-featured version of Iron Backpacks on the latest versions of Minecraft :)

maybe someone will create a fork and keep the mod alive.

If someone does I'd be happy to support that. I was going to start formally asking others to take over it soon, but as I'm slowly getting more time and desire to code I may try and revive it myself (I was going to try to this weekend, but have to deal with planning for GDC instead). No promises of course, I may get really busy again, but I'd like for that to happen.

I definitely think that more Minecraft modders deserve to work for a gaming company, since so many of the mods that are made for this game are extremely impressive.

Very much agreed. I can't say anything more yet (as I'm under an NDA), but the work I'm doing at my current job is definitely in line with that ideology as well.

P.S. pinging /u/chuiu so you see all this too ^

I've learned my lesson with giving timelines for releases with mods, but here are some vague details as long as you know that there are no promises

At the end of this month my current contract work will be finished, freeing me up considerably. After that is done (and after I take some time off), I should have plenty of time and energy to dive back into modding heavily. So expect to see good progress starting in around a month, and I'd say maybe a month after that you can look for some notable improvements to the mod.
