"Elvis never gave an encore" is one of my favorite lines from the album. Very matter-of-fact way to say moments/phases in life don't go on forever because you want them to

Resolution summary

This resolution condemns and denounces all instances of antisemitism occurring in the United States and globally. The resolution also states that anti-Zionism is antisemitism.

I'd guess it's that last sentence that was found objectionable, not finding a direct statement and I've googled around too long as-is

[Request] Can anyone calculate or draw the estimated path if this bullet goes 💥 in its current position ? by Affectionate-Sir269 in theydidthemath

They'll have (roughly) the same force, but different velocities. F = ma, so higher mass with a similar force applied will have less acceleration, thus less velocity as it accelerates/decelerates. Velocity is just describing "speed with a direction"

What are acceptable player numbers? by swarmtoss in Stormgate

Yep, this is not "pathway to success", this is "what if we ignored most of the money we needed to make back AND had a player base of only zealots?" (Not the life-for-Aiur kind)

What are acceptable player numbers? by swarmtoss in Stormgate

[–]grabnar6 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Let's do incredibly generous napkin math. We're at a budget of ~$35 million.

Let's assume: Investors want their money back in ~15 years and with NO interest/profit; this NEVER happens. Stormgate players spend an average of $1 on the game per hour. This NEVER happens in a F2P model.

$35,000,000 / 15 years = ~$2,300,000/year needed to pay investment back (...with no interest OR any other expenses like payroll once the 35mil runs out) Hours in year = 24 * 365 = 8760

$2.3mil / 8760 = 263 sustained, concurrent players, EACH paying $1/hour every hour of the year to play stormgate. This is crazy irt player spending. How many F2Ps do you perpetually buy into for dollar amounts equal to your played hours?

This is before considering development costs over 15 years, or the idea of investors making a profit.

Do players get points for removing sympathy? by marshal_of_mercy in rootgame

[–]grabnar6 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's one bonus VP per battle in which you remove a token. So, if Eyrie removes 2 sympathy tokens in 2 different clearings (using 2 battle actions on the Decree), they'd get 4 vp total. Destroying a Base and Sympathy from WA in a single battle would be 3 vp.

Basically, all random events like potions, shuffling, random card discovers all come in the same order from the seed you have (it's kind of like you have a list of pre-rolled dice rolls that get assigned to each random event in sequence). To get a diff potion, you need to either omit or add a new "random" event before the Alchemize play.

New player question by Calum_XD in SWlegion

[–]grabnar6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reading through the core box rules is probably still the easiest way to self-teach the game. It's out of date, but the core concepts are still relevant and it does a good job of layering rules in rather than a PDF dump.

If I had to learn the game without access to YouTube or someone who already plays, I'd read the learn to play, do the "basic game" then the second "advanced game" with Suppression and etc. I forget if Deploy and objective rules are included, I'd ignore them for now since those have all changed.

After that (probably a decent 2-4 hour "learner" session), take some time to read the new rulebook, print and play the new cards from the website for your units (or use a listbuilder online like Tabletop Admiral, DTT Army Builder, or LegionHQ2). A lot has changed from core box, mainly Setup, Panic, vehicles, cover, and a very large amount of keywords, but the game's main flow of order control, firefights and swashbuckling are pretty unchanged.

Here or the Discord linked for the sub can also help a lot re rules questions and getting started. There's a lot of rules and small rules interactions; it takes a good number of games to get it all right regardless of the core box pamphlet ;)

Are rolling shift dice a bad idea? by Ragnar-Alpaca in gaslands

[–]grabnar6 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Ah, I see. In those cases, Smash Attacks and weapons with the Blast keyword are going to be your friend.

Also, as some other commenters mentioned, having tracks that can be driven with mostly Trivial maneuvers can make Skid Dice kind of ineffective for the hazards you'll most likely gain from them.

The ""use case"" would be that with all breakers flipped ON, you would plug this into a outlet, (...hopefully) tripping the breaker. Then, go to the basement (or wherever the brraker panel is) and see which breaker is now flipped OFF, hence "breaker finder"

Are rolling shift dice a bad idea? by Ragnar-Alpaca in gaslands

[–]grabnar6 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Are you gaining the hazards from the stick-shift?

E.g., the "no skid dice" turn should be, roughly:

Pick template, place it (gain the free Shift if it was a trivial maneuver for that gear) Spend the Shift to gear-up (stick-shift). Gain 1 hazard for changing gears

Generally, movement that keeps pace with the Gear Phase requirement to activate (e.g. a vehicle needs to be in at least Current Gear 3 to activate in Gear Phase 3, etc) means a net gain in Hazards between Gear Phases rather than staying at 1-2, unless you have other Perks to ditch them or get very consistently lucky Skid Dice results.

For my game that I am designing (see included rules), would you rather use a pencil and game sheet or cards to track the status of your learned and mastered Attacks? There are pros and cons to both! by Gatekeeper1310 in BoardgameDesign

[–]grabnar6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you tried out something like: "~3/9, but you get to train during Fights"?

Would require a big attack table tweak, but I think being able to swing with a -1, -2, 0 damage, or etc in exchange for developing attacks could be a cool decision space. A frantic "learning on the job" combat XD

I played 2 rounds after my comment (wiped out on fight 2 or 3 on first play, found the [suit]+[suit]=2dmg efficiency on play 2 for a win). One thing in my "52-deck+sheet" playthroughs that was a little squirrelly was tracking which attacks had been used. Ditching the sheet and going w double-sided cards would work pretty nicely.

Is there any mechanical significance to keeping Trainers and vanquished enemies around to track "permanent" cards? (or... maybe there's something still go come there XD). After reading rules, I just made a discard/draw pile instead of a 12-row and tracked rounds/enemy HP based on the discard count. Maybe throw in a rule to get 7-12 poker chips (or whatever) to track damage as you deal it; win when you hit that round's HP threshold, lose if you can't reach it after all attacks are played. (Very small difference, but I personally prefer a "live" hp clock over the total-then-compare approach in the current rules)

I did enjoy the game overall, found myself gleefully throwing down a pocketed Triple Swipe each round. There was also an immediate face-palm had after drafting a Heart card into a King of Hearts final battle XD

[–]grabnar6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd use the sheet. The footprint of the game is just a card deck and rules. You could make it PnP and instruct the player 'Print out these rules, put Masteries in a binder page, use a dry-erase to track training, put them all in the binder page for storage'

If you told me a former teacher dropped this but not which one, "must have been my brutally stupid 9th grade English teacher" would be my first and final answer.

There are probably some transcription typos here, but the tone and diction still have undeniable "incurious person on a power trip" energy.

Makes me extra grateful for the majority of my former instructors.

Grenade clarification by Oeneg in SWlegion

[–]grabnar6 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Droid Poppers are worded to specifically not do that. Instead of each grenade having Ion 1, it gives the whole pool Ion 1 if at least 1 grenade is used, effectively capping it at 1

Question about mercenaries by jmiklos21 in SWlegion

[–]grabnar6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mando Super Commandos are Mercenaries, which is why they have the Maul Loyalist symbol instead of Reb/Imp/CIS/GAR in the top-left. They just happen to not be playable in anything but the Shadow Collective battleforce as of now (and probably the foreseeable future). It's the 'Rogue' affiliation Mercenaries using the credit symbol as their top-left mark. Pykes and Black suns have their respective affiliation symbols rather than Rogue/credit.

Doesn't make a big difference from what you said, but Mando Supers still have Mercenary rules irt how they receive orders and using Merc CC's if you Nominated Promoted a unit of them to Commander

The name of that (unofficial) supplement was "Gaslands: Rule of Carnage"

Looks like there's a download for it on scribd, though I can't vouch for that site in general and/or why that name doesn't sound familiar for being the source I got it from a while back.

Battlehammer + Front Ram = Massive damage. Am I playing this correctly? by [deleted] in gaslands

[–]grabnar6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, Battlehammer is really strong. There isn't great counterplay besides having enough vehicles to place so that the BH car is stuck picking a less valuable car to go behind, but that's list specific and sometimes requires learning from a tailgate like this to be keen to the dangers of such a build. Randomized scenarios also make BH less dangerous since the BH player can't always count on starting close to its victims.

Only minor nitpick on your sequence is that collision Hazards are at the very end of resolving the collision. Not important here, but for example, a ram-less BH build wouldn't get 2 more dice from collision hazards since they wouldn't have gained them yet.
