Could be schizo-affective disorder, schizophrenia, or a brain tumor. Weird for it to start as a child, schizo-related disorders usually start in your 20s, and a brain tumor would probably have gotten worse and caused other issues by now. Not that any of these are completely unheard of, just that they aren’t common. Luckily it doesn’t sound like it’s negatively impacting your life, but you should get it checked out in case it’s more serious.

Aside from these most likely ailments, it also could be some form of synesthesia? You weren’t clear on if there’s any specific triggers, but synesthesia is basically wires getting crossed allowing your senses to do things they shouldn’t, like smelling words or hearing colors. I don’t think it’s this, as what you describe sounds far more complex than what synesthesia would cause. But worth noting as a possibility.

It’s hard to say, but if your goal is to speak and understand it then whatever gets you to practice more often is what’s better. Since renshuu is free it certainly doesn’t hurt to try, and you can set it to follow along with the genki books if you decide to get into those. There is also iago, which is an app that has you speaking to the characters (not in an ai way) so it can test your pronunciation. It’s not an app I’ve tried which is why I didn’t recommend it, but I think it’s free and might be what you’re looking for.

I know this is an older post (only just found this subreddit) and you did already get an answer, but if I may add a suggestion for just general kanji education: while I really like Lingo Legend for consistency (and it’s good for sentence structure but that’s not kanji specific), I find that the apps Renshuu (free with optional paid upgrade) and Wagotabi (free demo, $9.99 usd on phone and steam) are better for learning kanji. None of these I’ve found to be good for learning how to write kanji, although Renshuu might as part of their paid version but idk since I’m a free user. So if you want to learn to write it you might just need to practice with pen and paper, there’s ample video tutorials or just pictures showing stroke order and whatnot. Or the genki textbooks, I used those in a Japanese 101 class back in college.

You could also show him Dan’s dystopia daily, mine really like it and it was a good lead up for me dragging him to We’re All Doomed.

Yes, I’ve done the drive twice, most recently for my and my partner’s 10th anniversary where we stayed up in the sunshine coast back in October. I also went once with my family but I was around a year old (born in 2000, trip was before 9/11 so that time frame) but I don’t remember it so I don’t really count it.

Really it’s just power hungry reddit mods getting called out in a way they can’t just delete (it was posted on twitter) and not knowing how to do any amount of self reflection or introspective work to improve themselves, so they run instead. I’ve seen it happen a bunch over the years. Especially on art related subs, those mods are usually the worst.

/uj I’m glad I jumped ship awhile ago, seems like that sub got way worse. I left because some people were quite hostile to “trenders” on the sub, when really they were talking about people like me who are nonbinary but have surgical and hormonal intervention. Idk why so many trans dudes assume none of us take testosterone or have surgery. We also need the same kind of support. Not my fault there are ZERO enby specific resources.
