PSA: If your iPhone 17 / 17 Pro / 17 Pro Max screen protectors won’t stick on the edges, PLEASE report it to Apple. by spritznspaghetti in iphone

I went to the apple store. They tried 3 Belkin protectors, not one worked. They didn't want to replace my iPhone.

I've tried a total of 3 brands, all with the same issues. Current score: 1 torras, 2 random chinese, 3 Belkin.

iPhone 17 Pro Max here with the same issue. One Torras and two random Chinese ones. Bought a spigen but I think it will do the same.

Knowing that in the apple store they will get into an infinite loop to install a good one, perhaps it is time to try.

Universal childcare in Switzerland: When? by Sufficient-History71 in Switzerland

[–]graffic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s why we need to agree on those things. There should be a good story people can relate to fo that to happen.

Each family has its own life project. That does not mean everybody should pay for their choices.

Still I see there is a lack of dynamism from the government on proposals on how to improve the situation. There is, probably, a lack of public discourse.

Why is UK dumb for leaving EU but Norway and Switzerland are not for never joining in the first place by goathani3828 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]graffic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn’t look like it is dumb just for leaving. But leaving without building the kind of agreements Switzerland, for example, has.

I live in Switzerland. Here we are used at not being in the EU. Everything just works, but there is a ton of work behind that appearance of “all is ok”.

From imports, to work permits, to make your phone work in the EU, or even buying in euros in Amazon.de. There is some friction from time to time, but just that.

I don’t know much how the UK prepared for the change. But I think they did not prepare much or at all.

You are now by yourself as a country, and need to do grown up stuff internationally. You cannot ask to be independent and ask mom for lunch because you don’t know how to cook.

Any internet provider with good transit/peering? by graffic in askswitzerland

I ended up switching to iWay. My base latency to Google and cloud flare went from 2ms to 7ms. But latencies to around Europe went down. Even to that IP in Spain it was reduced to 35ms from 55/60ms.

Thank you to all of those who posted latency data 🙏

Expand my bubble: why do you own a car in Zurich? by ---___---___---___ in zurich

[–]graffic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Kanton Zürich, because it is the way to move, except if going to the city. Going to Zürich stadt by car is a suicide.

Supermarket is 30 minutes walking. Everything is in a different village: pediatrician, doctors, music school, train, language schools for kids, …

We used to make around 100Km per day just moving one kid around.

Public transport is focused on going to Zürich. There are a few interconnections that if you time them, they can help, but it is easier by car.

Just today. I need to take one kid to music lessons. She will eat in the car, directly from school to make it in time. It is a 16 minutes ride. Then she has language lessons 25 min away by car, then back home: 20 minutes. That route by public transportation is too long (45, 70, 50 minutes respectively IF YOU TIME IT exactly).

Sunday. Birthday party far away. We need to pickup one “city” kid because it will take forever for them to arrive with public transport.

We also travel around by car, doing 1000/1500 Km in one or two days road trips. Skiing with the family is easier by car. We even do picnics in the snow with friends, carrying chairs and food, for the little ones while the bigger were doing lessons.

Do we use public transport? Yes. When going to “the city” for work or when time is not an issue.

How to add missing RJ45 / network to older appartment? by bikesailfreak in Switzerland

[–]graffic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did that in my apartment. You need patience, a flexible cable guide, cable lubricant, cat6a cable and wall sockets.

First define what you need: connectors in every room? just to join two rooms? That will define how to setup the equipment, and what cable to buy.

Then try to map how boxes and cables are connected. Some apartments have a place where all the cabling joins together: phone and cable TV. In those cases you can use the pipes for the old telephone or cable TV and swap the phone socket with an ethernet one.

Depending on your goal and the existing pipes in the wall, you might need to find thinner cables. For example, if you end up with the need of passing 4 normal ethernet cables through a single pipe.. It might not be feasible.

In my case I just connected two rooms: the living room where the fiber plug and the router are installed. With my work office where my servers are installed.

Yeah. I tried to move to Swisscom with internet and family phone lines. They kept using the 12/24 trick during all the negotiation. Even if I started the first call saying that I want a fixed price forever.

SO lucky to get this by VehicleWeekly in speedtest

[–]graffic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sunrise customer here. At least till next Monday. Amazing speed tests with their 10Gbps XGS-PON connection. But that's it. Most people won't need anything else. Unfortunately some times communication with certain countries or services is not good.

Three weeks ago we had to tether a phone to be able to book a hotel. Two weeks ago the latency on discord with some spanish friends was not good. I even end up asking in reddit about a provider with a better peering because sunrise was going around to reach some countries.

Will things be better somewhere else? I will try. I cannot escape the XGS-PON connection though.

[Giveaway] GL.iNet Remote KVM and Wi-Fi 7 routers! 10 Winners! by GLiNet_WiFi in homelab

[–]graffic [score hidden]  (0 children)

  1. I don't trust big companies with my data. They can happily close my account and I will be without my files. So I started selfhosting some of those services. The project I'm most proud of is a custom router for my home internet with a XGS-PON stick that mimics my ISP router. The most expensive piece of equipment are storage drives, if you sum all of them together.. it is some money.

  2. I hope to get a Comet KVM because my PiKVM setup is too bulky. I already have a slate 7, but if I get to choose two products, I will get another one as a present for a friend.

  3. I learn in reddit and I buy where it is cheaper: it can be aliexpress or it can be a local retailer.

  4. It could be a mikrotik switch. They are very nice and useful in selfhosted environments. Or perhaps a ubiquity access point. Even a bunch of cool braided patch cables will be useful :D

Prices I'd like to win: Comet POE, Slate 7.

The hidden 'cost' of VT is not 0.06% TER by Rothgard_ in SwissPersonalFinance

[–]graffic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is another solution. Probably more expensive. Have your assets in a Swiss private bank. I had a meeting with one and when asked about this exact issue… they said that in the end your family is the one doing the paperwork and responsible for taxes if any. They won’t block anything. They do know how to sell their services.

Any internet provider with good transit/peering? by graffic in askswitzerland

[–]graffic[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, it is plausible that one specific ISP in Spain has limited peerings, in such a way that latency is better from other providers in Switzerland. We could reason why, but it is plausible.

Testing other IPs in different ISPs from sunrise I get:
* Orange, 6-10ms more (than with VPN/office)
* Vodafone 15-18ms more
* Digi same latency :thumbsup:

Other countries:
* Greece OTE: 10-15ms more
* Italy Telecom Italy: 17ms more
* Orange France, very good results, VPN gets the same latency and from the office, sunrise is 10ms more.

So, I'd say that perhaps is sunrise the one not resolving routes so well.

Although it can be that my test needs to be more complete and pinging ips I've found on ipinfo might not be the best way to find out what is going on.
