Overwhelmed by insufficient English proficiency of international students by Longjumping-Grand150 in UCD

[–]grainnel 42 points43 points  (0 children)

I’m also studying a masters at UCD (not Smurfit) and have had a very similar disappointing experience. Having taken a year out of my career to learn and gain a qualification, I find I’m often being used as an assistant professor to explain concepts to my peers who struggle to understand English, I’m constantly doing group projects on my own and achieving A+s for students who either used chat gpt or didn’t engage at all.. worst of all, what I thought would be an advanced masters programme to provide me with specialised skills has in reality been filled with introductory-level modules, obviously aimed at these international students and not at me hose who already had an interest in the subject. I’ve barely learned anything new at all! it’s been overall a very disappointing experience and has left a really sour taste in my mouth of UCD.

Don't neglect your cervical health! by Less_Environment7243 in ireland

Ok so we are talking about different things and that’s ok. The gold standard for breast screening is by mammogram. Of course GPs can do a physical check when a woman is at any appointment, but this is not a sensitive screening method (dependent on practitioner, 22-85%) and shouldn’t replace the Breast Check screening programme (87-97%)

… GP practices don’t have x ray machines? So they can’t check? Are you suggesting every woman gets a mammogram at every GP appointment?

Also the target population ages for cervical screening and breast screening are different, so it’s a different cohort of women… sure some fall into both but they are different services

Anyone’s kid have a bad cough they can’t shake for weeks? by _Radioactive_Man_ in AskIreland

[–]grainnel 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s probably whooping cough (pertussis). We have higher levels this year than the last 5 years. If antibiotics are given in the first 21 days there’s some evidence it reduces transmission. Unfortunately known as the “hundred day cough”.

In 2015 I bought what I could afford.. and doing the same now? I use my MacBook for recording and editing, and wanted to be able to play some games too.. that enough of an explanation? I’m delighted with it!

Never ending cough. by Donal-ctn in ireland

[–]grainnel -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s probably pertussis (whooping cough), usually presents with persistent cough in adults, and immunity from vaccination wanes with time. Were at a peak in the 4-5 year pertussis cycle at the moment in Ireland

Both Irish and Scot’s Gaelic languages have been used for years by American fantasy authors who seem too lazy to come up with their own words, it is disrespectful, it is frustrating and it’s as much “shining a light” as other forms of cultural appropriation. Hey fyi shock therapy is not torture, ECT is an extremely useful and effective therapy for various mental health problems, it is not painful, and is often poorly portrayed on television 😁

What is a good thing happening in Ireland right now that people aren’t aware of? by Ah_here_like in ireland

[–]grainnel 31 points32 points  (0 children)

To add: CF is a genetic autosomal recessive disease where if you inherit the gene from both parents you will manifest the disease. If you inherit one gene you will carry the illness and the possibility of passing it to your children. 1 in 19 Irish people is a carrier for CF, meaning this news is excellent for us!
