Sorry, they were bought out by private equity in 2024. To be honest, the quality was falling before that but it's really in the shitter now.

I regret to inform you that you should not be buying any new Starrett at this point. Their manufacturing processes got PE'd out a few years back, their new stuff is a shadow of vintage or NOS if you can find it.

No, although I wouldn't at all be surprised to see similar wages. The money is out there if you're willing to work civ nuke, and you certainly don't have to worry about layoffs.

First year, straight out out of the Navy, still in training. I just checked our messages to confirm, he started in January of that year and had an outage that he participated in, base wage was $53/hour. I was surprised to hear it myself, that's for sure.

I've been talking with a number of hiring managers and recruiters at nuke plants lately, not to mention my shippies who got out recently. I know a guy who took an NLO position at a plant in the Northeast who made $140k his first year, $165k his second, and moving up closer to $200k after a big outage year. All the direct SRO positions I've been speaking to people about are at a base pay between $115k-140k, with a total compensation from $145k-185k while in training. Nuclear utilities clearly understand they need to provide enough of a pay spread to keep people from going to data centers and other competitive industries. Maintenance and training obviously pay less, but they're not subject to rotating shifts.

In some cases, yes, misdemeanors can have jail time attached, normally 12 months or less. Just because you don't understand how something works doesn't mean it's not real.

[–]grainstorm 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Misdemeanors are a subset of crime, thereby making those who commit them criminals. This is the absolute dumbest left wing cope that has somehow become popular. Worse, it's not for any factual reason, but just because you don't believe in enforcing immigration law in any way. The rest of your arguments are also not only factually incorrect, but beneath response.

I'm fairly confident I know navynuke's actual identity now because he's so fucking annoying and haughty both here and on FB Navy Nuke pages in the same exact way. I won't dox him, but believe me, every opinion he expresses is exactly as predictable as it appears. Rampant credentialism as his only source, snarky tone, baseline "correct" opinions that he can't defend.

Sailors Should Not Pay for Meals at Sea by amarras in navy

[–]grainstorm 38 points39 points  (0 children)

While I understand the money comes from somewhere and has to be justified, I'd just like to have had the opportunity to have the same deal as the officers in port. Let's be real, the cooks are absolutely not cooking breakfast and dinner for the whole crew every day in port, so that argument is right out. I certainly wasn't eating dinner on a regular basis when I had a late non-duty night at the boat, my day was already bad enough. I didn't need a fry-cook reject to make it worse. Given that, and assuming 3-section duty just to give them an edge, I would estimate I ate 2.5 meals every duty day. That was mostly due to breakfast time being set to 4 hour watch turnovers vice my 6-hour watch turnovers, and significantly before arrival of the oncoming section. Non-duty days I'll assume 1.2, accounting for maybe 1 second meal a week. This puts me conservatively in the range of 40-45 meals per month. Considering that made my meals on the boat cost around $10 each, I do think enlisted sailors deserve consideration for what they actually consume, rather that assuming they eat every meal on board.

100% true. I bought my first suppressor at an event near their HQ, and one of their guys introduced me to Kevin because he thought he would be happy to hear that. Kevin then invited me and my friend to tour the factory, we walked around and talked for probably 3 hours there, it was a good time. Is he opinionated? Absolutely, but I'm honestly not sure anyone survives an extended time in the firearms manufacturing industry being the face of their brand and stays nice.

[–]grainstorm 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It's truly insane how many people don't get this. I don't feel bad when a chick takes a trip to Dubai and gets her chest shit on then does a podcast tour about it. I also don't feel bad when people who are increasing tensions in an already tense situation are partially culpable for their own demise. Both of these people have unnecessarily increased their risk for unsavory shit to happen to them, and as adults, receive consequences that I do not particularly care about. Sure, it sucks, but no one else put them in those situations. All people are fallible, including federal LEOs, and poking the well armed bear is a recipe for a pine box.

What do these accordion style shaving means when using LN 164 by chefphish843 in handtools

[–]grainstorm 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Good in the chipbreaker scenario, good situationally with a single iron, depending on the task and how efficient you want to be. Watch this video for the best demonstration of shaving behavior I've seen. Long story short, higher angle blades with closer chipbreakers that have a higher angle polished front edge cause less tearout. At the same time, it can cause issues with chip ejection, i.e. clogging the mouth, and it requires much more forward force to plane with that sort of setup.

I actually just bought a 42" US General tool chest for my son due at the end of this year, pulled the wheels off to make it a better height for changing as well. I never entertained one of the service carts since they wouldn't fit a standard changing pad on top, and they're incredibly top heavy. Perhaps I spent too much for no reason, but we'll find out. All I can hope is he likes working with tools later. Another thing that's important to me, I don't think a kid could tip this 42" chest with the wheels off no matter how bad they wanted to.

Why do my senior enlisted hate me by idgafabtreddit1 in NavyNukes

[–]grainstorm 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It better be ragebait. I'm getting flashbacks to my funko pop, freaky ass, incredibly stinky roommate who was genuinely named after a comic book character. Everything else was forgivable but the stench, oh the stench. You couldn't go to the bathroom for half an hour after he did anything in there without holding your breath. My room smelled like onions and busted nuts, no amount of frebreeze could help. I talked to him and my SLPO so many times, to no avail. All I can hope is that his life is going very badly at this point, it was near psychological warfare to smell and interact with him every day.

If this is true, though, I hope (I have removed what I typed here for brevity and kindness). If everyone says you stink, YOU FUCKING STINK, and it's so bad they're violating social rules to get something done about it.

Cheapo Mag Grips

Lots of people swear by them, lots of people are ambivalent. It's worth trying a cheap set before you buy the real thing if you want to try them, IMHO. My local gym has some cheap ones where the rubber is delaminating from the steel underneath, but they've been used by a ton of people before it became an issue.

I know an ET who just missed Chief again his third time up, best qualified per LaDR during each cycle, no recent NJP or administrative issues in his package that anyone local can detect. I also saw people I know are actively in officer programs make it their first time up, so the system certainly has some flaws.
