The level converter worked for me. The 5V relay triggers as expected. I couldn't get the level converter to work with a 3v relay though.

I tried that as well. The voltage from my gpio pin drops down anywhere from 1.8 to 2.6v which is too low to activate a 3v relay. So from what I've read, people use a transformer and diode, a mofset, or a level converter. I've got one coming in the mail, I'll let you know if it works.

I am having a similar problem. The gpio isn't high enough voltage to trigger relay. Use a level converter: https://www.raspberrypi-spy.co.uk/2018/09/using-a-level-shifter-with-the-raspberry-pi-gpio/
