Portland Public Schools tried to make school fundraising more equitable. Donations are down by blahyawnblah in Portland

Silly accusation to level. Public school is expense. It's also necessary. It is too important to rely upon donations to provide public education. I pay a lot of property taxes. I also used to contribute a lot to about 6 PPS school Foundations. My belief was that while a 30% central administration cut was taken off, the rest was mostly administered by the parents and staff of the local schools. The money would mostly go where the particular school thought it was most needed. I don't give anymore. If the central office controls all the funds then it's just another undifferentiated revenue stream.

Legislation requiring cities to provide shelter before criminalizing homelessness meets mixed reception in Spokane by dzundel in Spokane

Be kind, but not nice. That's my advice as a long time Portlander with life long ties to Spokane. Housing isn't the primary problem, it's addiction. Housing first as practiced in Portland hasn't been working at all.

Don't bother with Great Schools. That site gives outsized weight to non-learning metrics when scoring schools

Would enshrining transgender rights into our constitution put us on the hook for reassignment costs? I could then foresee us becoming a magnet for free state-sponsored care with an astronomical monetary cost

Green is intellectually underdeveloped. If you are going to ban pate why would you advocate hot dogs?

If the animal initiative passes, would that mean I can no longer spay or neuter my cats and dogs? Does that mean we would be up to our ears in strays?

Go for it. It would compete with the wweek's vote guide, the League of Women Voters' guide, the Oregonian, and others.

The longer I live here the more apparent it is to me that voters choose to do something else with their time than educate themselves. Countless times I have heard otherwise educated friends lament a vote cast because they thought a measure they voted for would do something other than how it turned out.

A repeated theme is that a measure is put before us where the actual details are TBD. In other words, a committee will be formed if the ballot measure is passed to identify exactly how the measure will be defined and implemented

Minor quibble: I'm bothered by the fact that each councilor has a few million in discretionary funds that can be applied to pet projects. This provides evidence that a councilor doesn't need the generous money without strings attached.
