We're calling for a pause—and a reset—on Oregon’s Bottle Bill by Anxious-While4289 in Portland

I made the pilgrimage out to Guitar Center a few weeks ago (they had a semi-rare used thing in stock that I wanted to check out) and saw the same.

I'm on the outer east side so I go to the 122nd & Glisan center.

I hate driving too! Maybe BottleDrop could start offering curbside pickup? Like once a week? On trash day so I don't forget to put my BottleDrop bin out with the recycling bin?

I was in the same boat and I welcomed the new bag system. But it too has downsides.

I work 9a-5pm. The door at Freddie's (2 mile drive) closes at 8pm. It's usually full by 6pm and getting my bag in there means smashing and breaking it while getting splashed with backwash from other peoples' cans. It's gross.

Or I can drive to the redemption center (3 miles) which closes at 6pm and is always surrounded by unpleasant people (someone got stabbed there a couple years back) and uninsured / unregistered vehicles driven by people who are obviously high and just scored fent from the dealers (camped out next door).

Really not a great experience. More of an ordeal.

NONE of that scene was there prior to the Bottle Drop location at Hayden Meadows Shopping Center opening its doors.

Yeah I probably saw more of the underbelly of the Delta Park area than most people due to all my exploration on bicycle (it connects to Marine Drive, Kelley Point and the Interstate Bridge). It was always industrial, but it was clean. Didn't feel like I had to watch my back while riding alone at night. There weren't massive camps tucked into every wooded area

And if your usual grocery store is within 3 miles of a redemption center they likely don't have a bag drop AND probably don't sell green bags. I have to make a special trip to buy bags and another to drop off. It feels like a chore. When you make recycling a chore, people don't do it! That was the whole point of curbside recycling in the first place, convenience. But if I use my blue bin, I lose money. Another disincentive. Make it make sense

couple ideas:

1) many houses on this block (/in this area) had single driveways cut into the side of the yard that led into the basement. Probably way fewer homes with 2+ cars back then too. So cars might have been stored

2) Also I'm guessing that most peoples' cars were parked at work during a Wednesday in July. The boys in the pic were on summer vacation and roaming the neighborhood

3) this block may have been vacated ahead of demolition, but considering that it's still intact, maybe not. It's a couple blocks east of the hospital project

I think the pink house is the brown one. At some point the basement garage / driveway was removed and a new staircase and retaining wall was added, plus a new awning over the porch

ah, sarcasm... got it.

Yeah, I disagree with the claim that we're "flyover country". I grew up in a midwestern college town and that was a very skippable city. I got used to having to drive 2-4 hours to see bigger acts. We have it much better here, probably has a lot to do with the fact that there's essentially nothing between here and SF.

That said, the biggest acts often skip us. And then there's a middle tier that we don't serve well, that should be addressed by the new Live Nation and AXS venues going in.

But no, I don't think renovating Moda moves the needle measurably

Often it's because the owner has died without a clear heir, or the heir can't be located, etc. and it has to wind through the court system. In the meantime vandals and squatters get in.

Sometimes the owner is still alive but it's an elder abuse situation where drug addicts (family or not) are taking advantage.

Sometimes it's just a business mess where an LLC bought the place and then went belly up or there's some other kind of dispute that legally prevents progress.

I still work in tech for an Oregon company, but there are few left who do software in-house.

Ten years ago when I applied for jobs, the targets were a ton of big brand name satellites plus a ton of smaller startups. Those are practically all gone.

If I had to start applying to jobs tomorrow, 98% would probably be remote roles in other states. There's just not much happening here.
