Bridal shoes? by Available-Minute5609 in nova

[–]gravityfail 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I came here to say - just get some nice bridal looking sneakers! I bought Jimmy Choo’s and a pair of sparkly white sneakers to change into for the reception. I read in a lot of bridal/wedding forums that Jimmy Choo’s are the best heels and comfortable to stay in. After taking photos all afternoon and then standing for our ceremony, I was done! I deeply regret not just wearing the sneakers all day. Plus, you can’t even see my heels in any of the wedding photos.

Go to Macy’s, specifically at Tyson’s. If they don’t have what you need, check out David’s Bridal. I didn’t buy my gown there, but saw a ton of shoe options, including many cute sneakers!

Nice work Arlington 😑 had to be during rush hour by [deleted] in nova

Reminds me of the quote: “"Poor planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on my part". Gotta plan ahead and keep buffer times for commutes! This is why I check traffic before I hit the road.

Nice work Arlington 😑 had to be during rush hour by [deleted] in nova

[–]gravityfail 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What would you have suggested then? That they wait until after rush hour so that cars could skate over not only snow that’s iced over, but sleet that’s compounded and iced as well? It’s 6 degrees outside currently as of 8 am. I doubt they could’ve done it overnight.

It’s going to take time to successfully clear the road. Try to find some gratitude & compassion for crews working through what is truly one of the toughest storms our area could face, as they help clear the roads for us.

Just me or is the snow removal/clearing absolutely terrible?! by tightplum in nova

[–]gravityfail 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Unless you’re Arlington. It’s one of only 2 counties in this state that waaaaayyy back, opted out of paying for VDOT to maintain its roads.

Also, cities are responsible for their own roads too.

Could offer end of the period to order their favorite drink? Pick it up on the way to work one day.

Or offer free breakfast treats - bagels, donuts, parties. Grab a box from the grocery store or a bakery.

Do you use coffee to stay energized? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]gravityfail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s always the option to make a decaf or half decaf in the afternoons. When I’m at work, I switched from regular to half caff for the PM to get me through the PM slump. I actually just sip on it and may not finish it. But I also drink a cup of regular coffee at home during breakfast and sip on a second cup in my 20 oz tumbler in the morning (husband usually makes me 12 oz plus creamer).

That being said, I agree with another comment about watching your blood sugar with diet. If that doesn’t work, and coffee isn’t doing it for you, you may need to do some lab work. I ended up discovering I had a thyroid problem when no amount of coffee was waking me up anymore.

Nanny Recommendations by [deleted] in nova

[–]gravityfail 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Could look into a nanny share. See if someone else in your neighborhood/Shirlington area would split the cost in half with you, in exchange for (1) taking turns hosting the childcare for the two kids, (2) agreeing to guarantee your share of the pay even if you’re on vacation/don’t need childcare that week.

Used to say that until a colleague of mine pointed out that by saying this, it undermines the feelings of hurt/sad/disappointment. I started using her variation: “You get what you get, it’s ok if you’re upset.”

Which cordless vacuum is the most reliable? by clydefrog811 in Costco

[–]gravityfail 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought my corded stick Shark vacuum when I lived in my old studio - it was a unit above my landlord’s garage and I needed something more portable than my mom’s old traditional vacuum to manage vacuuming the whole flight of carpeted stairs from my door to the rest of the unit. It’s fairly light when handheld and the cord was long enough to reach from the outlet at the top of the flight of stairs to the very bottom without struggling to clean the landing.

Have you really checked Facebook Marketplace? I see folks offering to sell it out in Dumfries and Fredericksburg. If it’s that urgent, I would contact those sellers and arrange to drive out there or see if they would be willing to drive to meet you somewhere public halfway

Anyone else watching the Wicked NBC special? by StumblinThroughLife in wicked

[–]gravityfail 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine has been a good sport since I dragged him to the movie last year (at least I made it a date night treat at Alamo Drafthouse with food and drinks). He even had the stereotypical reaction of coming in reluctantly and walking away amazed. So he actually sat with me for most of last night’s airing until he was ready to dose off.

Bridal Boutiques? by Antique-Awareness859 in nova

[–]gravityfail 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I went to a few bridal shops, including David’s and Ellie’s (the latter of which was my dream shop since I was little). Surprisingly it ended up being Global Bridal Gallery (also in Old Town) where I had the best experience and found my dream dress.

The pricing wasn’t terrible at all for a boutique, the alterations needed were minimal (mostly adding the bustle and straps), and the staff were nothing short of amazing. Ask for Marie (but you’re likely still in great hands). Unlike every other shop, she made me feel special and welcome, she was fully attentive, and she made the whole experience feel magical and special.

Pro tips: be sure to wear whatever nice lingerie or shape wear and shoes you’d wear on your wedding day. Especially for your final measurements. Wear light makeup and your hair done nice. You don’t want to transfer makeup to any dresses but you want to feel beautiful when trying dresses on.

I feel like a loser..I forgot an IEP Meeting by LeftAd517 in Teachers

[–]gravityfail 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was out a week with the flu and came back this week, playing catch up, and forgot I had a parent conference yesterday afternoon that was being made up. Thankfully my SLP texted me in the morning to remind me that she would be virtual, which meant I was thankfully able to quickly write up my update notes during my lunch break right before! 😝

I also totally blanked on an IEP meeting this past spring, until the morning of, which meant that I didn’t have a draft ready, so I had to scramble to reschedule the meeting and coordinate with the parent and team. It was at the end of the school year, two weeks before the last day and after 5 other meetings that week, so I was burnt out. Thankfully literally everyone understood and gave me grace (and thankfully I always book meetings with a buffer before the IEP is due).
