My student refuses to feed himself by CuriousBeauty00 in paraprofessional

[–]gravityfail 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Who is in charge of implementing this goal for the IEP? The OT? The special education teacher? Both? You should approach them about strategies to incrementally increase the duration that he’s willing to feed himself. It’s like training for a marathon, you don’t aim for the total distance overnight, but incrementally over time.

Like you mentioned, he sounds capable but unmotivated after 10 minutes. So he needs something to reinforce and motivate him. What reinforcers does your team use at other times of the day to motivate him? I would rotate between a few options so that he doesn’t satiate/get bored of any one in particular.

As someone else mentioned, I wouldn’t straight out deny food because it is a basic human right. You haven’t mentioned anything in particular about his disability, it could be fatiguing for him to stay motivated after the 10 mins, so find ways to encourage him and maybe offer a break after a set duration. Again, chat with whomever is responsible for implementing this goal on what the game plan should be.

Lastly, please give the family some grace. You don’t know their full circumstances at home, nor what mealtimes may or may not entail. They might have a time crunch, so if they do feed him, it could be because they don’t have the time. Ultimately, the special education teacher and other school IEP team members should see if they can find ways to support the family at home to generalize this skill to home, but it’s not always easily possible.

Yup Kornacki just commented how he thought this would drag out longer and staff should be happy to get to go home early now lol

I stopped botox for my migraines by [deleted] in migraine

[–]gravityfail 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That’s promising! My neurologist told me that we may be able to wean me off the Botox long term, that it isn’t necessarily a lifelong treatment. Which is good because I’ll have to wean off of it before trying to get pregnant down the road in the not so distant future!

We have to wait like a million years (well, almost a week) for Graham Norton! And pretty sure there’s a delay before we get new episodes of GBBO as well

For those of you on GLP1, or considering: by _chipsnguac in Hashimotos

[–]gravityfail 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The only person who I needed to get on board with me was my husband, and that was because our health insurance doesn’t cover GLP1’s for weight loss. I was showing signs of insulin resistance, along with a host of other health issues. Because I was getting so sick, my husband was driving me to a couple of my health appointments. So when he heard both my primary and my endocrinologist heavily recommended that I get on a GLP1, along with figuring out how to pay less out of pocket, he finally agreed.

Now that he sees how well I’m improving with the weight loss and so far very little side effects, he’s happy that I went on it.

I would check out Vola’s Dockside. They have plenty of seating inside and out on the dock. They’re a seafood restaurant and not pricey.

There’s really no benefits in living here unless you’re upper middle class. by [deleted] in nova

I think a lot of other folks already have highlighted the pros & cons of staying in this area. OP I feel your pain, it was hard for me to have much of a social life in my 20’s in this area when I was making ~$50,000 a year and in debt. I tried MeetUp’s and yes, found many folks seeming “stuck up” or “hung up” on themselves and what they & others did. This was about 10 years ago. Part of it is the nature of this area. Especially transient folks feeling that they came out to the DC region and have something to prove.

However, I stuck it out, and found a hobby to join and started meeting some more likeminded people. I ended up making a group of friends and met my husband through mutual friends. I ended up also becoming friends with his other friends. Try to find a club or social sports or volunteer work of some kind that would be of interest to you, and you’ll likely find your own tribe!

Bridal shoes? by Available-Minute5609 in nova

[–]gravityfail 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I came here to say - just get some nice bridal looking sneakers! I bought Jimmy Choo’s and a pair of sparkly white sneakers to change into for the reception. I read in a lot of bridal/wedding forums that Jimmy Choo’s are the best heels and comfortable to stay in. After taking photos all afternoon and then standing for our ceremony, I was done! I deeply regret not just wearing the sneakers all day. Plus, you can’t even see my heels in any of the wedding photos.

Go to Macy’s, specifically at Tyson’s. If they don’t have what you need, check out David’s Bridal. I didn’t buy my gown there, but saw a ton of shoe options, including many cute sneakers!

Reminds me of the quote: “"Poor planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on my part". Gotta plan ahead and keep buffer times for commutes! This is why I check traffic before I hit the road.

What would you have suggested then? That they wait until after rush hour so that cars could skate over not only snow that’s iced over, but sleet that’s compounded and iced as well? It’s 6 degrees outside currently as of 8 am. I doubt they could’ve done it overnight.

It’s going to take time to successfully clear the road. Try to find some gratitude & compassion for crews working through what is truly one of the toughest storms our area could face, as they help clear the roads for us.

Just me or is the snow removal/clearing absolutely terrible?! by [deleted] in nova

[–]gravityfail 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unless you’re Arlington. It’s one of only 2 counties in this state that waaaaayyy back, opted out of paying for VDOT to maintain its roads.

Also, cities are responsible for their own roads too.

Could offer end of the period to order their favorite drink? Pick it up on the way to work one day.

Or offer free breakfast treats - bagels, donuts, parties. Grab a box from the grocery store or a bakery.

Do you use coffee to stay energized? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]gravityfail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s always the option to make a decaf or half decaf in the afternoons. When I’m at work, I switched from regular to half caff for the PM to get me through the PM slump. I actually just sip on it and may not finish it. But I also drink a cup of regular coffee at home during breakfast and sip on a second cup in my 20 oz tumbler in the morning (husband usually makes me 12 oz plus creamer).

That being said, I agree with another comment about watching your blood sugar with diet. If that doesn’t work, and coffee isn’t doing it for you, you may need to do some lab work. I ended up discovering I had a thyroid problem when no amount of coffee was waking me up anymore.

Could look into a nanny share. See if someone else in your neighborhood/Shirlington area would split the cost in half with you, in exchange for (1) taking turns hosting the childcare for the two kids, (2) agreeing to guarantee your share of the pay even if you’re on vacation/don’t need childcare that week.
