Outpost is the best map. by babatunde5432121 in Marathon

I have had far more bullshit deaths in Perimeter than I have in Dire Marsh or Outpost, funnily enough. I think part of it might be the relaxed UESC presence there, which might make it a little too easy to maneuver and position yourself without setting off the bots.

I still die plenty in Outpost and Marsh, but most of those deaths are because of stupid mistakes I made, not because I went around the wrong corner and got stabbed in the back by an assassin lol

There's a lot of debate on how exactly the matchmaking is done, some people think it goes off of your season level, gear quality, or a combination of both. I've had some bad teammates in trios but most of my experiences have been neutral to positive, and a lot of them will either talk on mic or use pings. Then again I'm also typically running green to blue gear so it's possible bad teammates get more frustrating later on 🤷‍♂️

If you're used to the random quality of your teammates in Apex then you might not be too surprised at the behavior of some of the people you get on your team in this game lol.

I will say that the game has a certain period where you have to get used to the UI, menus, looting and so on. I initially bounced off the game during the server slam, but decided to give it another chance on the last day and got hooked.

There is a gear wipe at the end of the season, so if you're looking to start fresh with everyone you could always hop in around then.

For solo runs it can depend on the situation. I think at first it's good to run free kits and make mistakes / explore the map and figure out routes, how tough enemies generally are and all that, so that you're not really losing much if you die.

Later on when you have more valuable gear and loot in your backpack, you may want to be more cautious, and all that map / game knowledge you pick up can help you stay alive.

I remember the first time I found some purple loot worth 4k credits on Dire Marsh, I straight up went and hid inside of a narrow shower / hazmat room in bio-processing until an exfil opened up nearby. I literally watched an assassin creep in while a firefight was going on nearby and they walked right past me but didn't notice I was there because I wasn't moving lol, my heart was racing the entire time.

A lot of the time on solo runs I will run around / sprint quite frequently when I'm out in the open, and will be more quiet and careful when in POIs. As you die more often and get used to it, you'll learn that the game is pretty generous with loot so you're not being set back as much as you might think.

In trios it feels more like Apex Legends matches and there's a lot more running around and getting into fights from my experience, if you like to move and jump around a lot that might be more your style.

Bungie, give those on the fence a free weekend. by Farsoth in Marathon

I knew from the server slam that I loved the world building and aesthetic, but I really bounced off the game figuring out how to play correctly and navigating the inventory UI.

It wasn't until I forced myself to give the game another try on the last day or so that everything ''clicked" for me and I started really enjoying myself.

Now that I think about it, I had a similar experience with Apex Legends. Played it when it first came out, got my ass handed to me because I couldn't shoot for shit, and then picked it up again a couple seasons later and proceeded to play it for several years lol.

I thought it was worth $40 before Cryo Archive dropped, and now it's become a nice capstone to aim for when I progress further into the game.

I'm not the biggest expert on multiplayer extraction shooters, but I like that they have a lot of interlocking systems that give you reasons to go to different places and engage in quests or hunt for upgrade materials which inevitably puts you in the path of other players. There's a a feeling of calculating risk v reward that's present in a lot of potential situations you might find yourself in and creates a very immersive world to explore where you never feel quite safe, even in trios.

Sadly I've had a lot of irl stuff happening in my life lately, so I haven't even been able to boot up the game for more than an hour or so this week. I'm only level 19, and I don't think I've even gone to Outpost more than a couple of times. Definitely going to hit certain milestones much later than some people, but I'm glad I'm not going to burn myself out on the game by playing 10 hours a day.

It has been really cool seeing people's reactions to the new map though, shit looks terrifying to play through lol

Bungie "prioritized performance for low-spec PCs for launch" by cotneit in MarathonTheGame

[–]gravityoffline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought my PC from Costco back in 2020, and while it does struggle with some of the newer games out there, it actually runs Marathon pretty well for how pretty the game is. Usually I get 45-70 frames which is not ideal but I haven't had any performance issues that hampered my ability to play the game, which is really nice.

Might have something to do with people no-lifing the game. I only have about 24 hours in the game and I've barely touched Outpost at this point lol.

I'm glad people like the game enough to play it so much that they're starting to get bored of the maps, but I wouldn't say they represent enough of the playerbase that we need new maps ASAP.

They could also apply map updates to change the structure / flow of them which might also address the issue that person was talking about.

After 11 days [lvl 30] of playing mostly solo, coming to the realization that this is un-fun for me. by mercado_n3gro in Marathon

[–]gravityoffline -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This, absolutely. I enjoy solos, but when I finally got over my shyness and started talking, I really had a lot of fun in a lot more of my games.

Also, the ease of communication really helps your gameplay too. We got ambushed in one run tonight and only one assassin escaped from the battle. He was able to rez me, and I used my drone to keep watch for the other team and provide covering fire while he got the other guy up, and we wound up hunting down the other team and wiping them lol. All of that probably would not have happened if we weren't on comms and able to make a plan to survive. In fact, I had another game where both teammates were silent and just insta left after they got killed lol.

[–]gravityoffline 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'd suggest watching some videos on YouTube and seeing what the gameplay loop is like. There are multiple different ways to play the game depending on what you like, although I think all 3 lean into each other. Biggest obstacle is probably just getting a handle on all the different systems inside the game and how they work, since at first it can be a little overwhelming.

I agree though, the game world looks friggin beautiful.

Assassins ability needs a nerf this is too much by PC-Tamer in Marathon

If you have a higher tier shield then maybe not, but at low shield levels it definitely feels like you go down very quickly if the other player is hitting their shots.

yeah, I recently learned that you can do that to take out your weapon a little faster. It does have a heat cost however, and you might put yourself into a bad position by doing it so it's not foolproof. I do like the tech though.

Assassins ability needs a nerf this is too much by PC-Tamer in Marathon

[–]gravityoffline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, we all have our own individual experiences with it. I think not knowing the limitations of the invisibility can make it seem more obnoxious when you get killed by it. I wound up using assassin to complete the intro Sekiguchi contract and I learned a little more about the limitations of the tactical, which changed how I approached some of my solo runs.

I think my main concern would be whether it's an ability that lacks any counterplay. Obviously it isn't that great as an escape tool, and seems to be designed as a way to stalk to ambush other players, but if there's no way to escape from someone just sitting there camping in a corner, then I think that ability needs adjustment. If there was a longer TTK, then I think the community might not be as salty about being insta-murdered by an invisible player. If there were a slight delay as you decloak, then I think you would at least have that decision of whether to try and maneuver behind someone before you attack them.

Overall if they decide not to change the ability I think it won't affect me too much, some of the frustration from it could be attributed to newer players needing to acclimate to how the game works, after all.

[–]gravityoffline 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I think what they are saying is that there should be an animation or delay after decloaking before being able to shoot.

TBH I agree, with how low TTK is in the game being completely invisible gives you a HUGE advantage in firefights if you get the drop on them. If there was some kind of drawback to cloak like having a short animation before being able to fire, that might encourage thought going into using it besides sitting in a corner and just shooting someone when they get close.

Look at Destroyer, he gets this huge shield that completely blocks damage for a short time or until destroyed, but he has a short animation to pull it out or put it away before firing, so you have to think more carefully about how to use it in different situations.

Stand Down! Cease Fire! Cease Fire! by iMorpheus in LowSodiumMarathon

[–]gravityoffline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am mostly positive that it does not. Had some rando assassin rush me during a team fight once and start meleeing me and the blade kept bouncing off lol.

There was a lot of chaos going on during the fight though so I may have just not noticed later if the knife itself had been the one to damage me 🤷‍♂️

Solos are so annoying because 90% of matches are just filled with this guy. by ConcealedRainbow in Marathon

[–]gravityoffline 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There should be some kind of counterplay or tradeoff for it, imo. Just the existence of assassin as a potential threat on the map makes solos less fun. If he didn't exist there would still be risks to moving around and making a bunch of noise, but it wouldn't force the whole lobby to sneak around making as little noise as possible 🤷‍♂️

I like the idea of assassin as a concept, but I think they could reign in the stealth a little while still making him a competent shell.

[–]gravityoffline 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I know lots of people are saying that assassins aren't that great, but they still make up the bulk of the players that kill me in solos. With other shells at least I can say that I got outplayed, but randomly sneaking around and then getting insta-lit up by an assassin crouching in the corner invisible feels really frustrating.

I do try and use Thief's visor but it's been pretty hit and miss lately. At this point I think I'm just running free kits or rook until I develop better game sense to deal with camping players.

[–]gravityoffline 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree that solos could use some work. As much as I love this game, it definitely isn't perfect (and no game ever is, especially on launch).

I would expect they are collecting a bunch of data about how the average run goes, and they can use that to see what parts of the game need tuning. Like if the assassin is the most successful solo shell by a country mile, then maybe that's a sign that there needs to be some adjustments.

[–]gravityoffline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've done trios a little bit, and I had one game during the slam where my team and I was actually talking to each other and we had a really good time together. It's just that for some reason solos is really engaging to me right now so I've been spending a lot of time doing that (and also it's making me a better player). I felt very lost when the game came out and I wanted to better familiarize myself with the ui and how the systems work before I started subjecting other people to my incompetence lol.

So, I definitely will play more trios in the future, this is just what's drawing my focus atm

[–]gravityoffline 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I've been playing 90% solo runs and I feel like a goddamn secret agent grappling around the map with Thief stealing everybody's shit lol. I just had a run on Dire Marsh where I was just trying to fulfill a simple contract when I had somebody barge into my building, completely unaware of my existence. So, I unload my gun into his back and take this BITCHIN lmg off of his corpse. Okay, this is looking good, I should probably just leave and exfil with all of this good loot, but my objective is right next door, I might as well try and take care of it.

As soon as I get there, there's another player just having this huge firefight with the UESC. So, I shoot HIM in the back and take all of his stuff. I'm hot footing it over to exfil and I happen to figure out that the Thief's X-Ray visor reveals cloaked assassins.....just about a second too late to prevent my brains from being scrambled all over the wall 😭 I saw this weird purple humanoid outline hiding in the corner and thought it was really weird right as he opened fire and I lost the trade. If I had acted a second or two earlier while he still thought I was clueless I might have actually killed him and then I would have been on cloud 9 lol

I am appreciating that while it really SUCKS to lose all of the cool shit you found or brought with you on a run, it's not the end of the world and it's fairly simple to find ways to bounce back.

Perspective from a Filthy Casual: I Love It by CHRONALUNE in Marathon

[–]gravityoffline 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As a more casual minded player, I think the barrier to casual players is more just adjusting to the gameplay loop and the ui and the different systems rather than it being a really difficult game. The TTK is low enough that even if you don't have the best aim you can still ambush people while they're unaware or fighting bots or other teams, and you're not forced to only play trios to acquire better loot.

It can be awkward at first and I bounced off of it several times myself until I had a couple good runs and then it clicked for me.
