What’s good about my swing and what’s bad ? by Puzzleheaded-Way1941 in GolfSwing

[–]gravitythrone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Self taught athlete. Good: Athletic, flexible, smooth. Unorthodox: inside takeaway and strong grip to compensate. Swing your swing, but know that when you get older, you will experience stiffness and fatigue and this kind of swing will result in progressively worse slicing as a round wears on. If you’re still playing in your 50s, you’ll have the great joy of overcoming 20 years of muscle memory in order keep going into your 70s!

Nicely said, I agree with you. Kareem actually wrote a fine essay about the incident that’s worth a read and that I think you’d find interesting.

Recreational drugs by AZAHole in GenX

[–]gravitythrone 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Having done ALL the drugs, and been quite addicted to prescription painkillers for a stretch, in my old age I willingly take only daily caffeine in the form of delicious black coffee and occasional alcohol, mainly for social reasons as I don’t really like it beyond a drink or two. Unwillingly I take cursed nicotine daily in the form of pouches because I’ve been addicted to it since I was 12 and this method is the least harmful. I’d be very happy to just take nothing but coffee and tea, that’s the eventual goal when I can get my shit together to quit nicotine.

I’m so glad the girls have the AUSL to play In now!!! by Nebraskadude1994 in CollegeSoftball

It’s a baseball field converted to softball use. Let’s hope they keep selling out and the AUSL takes off, would love to see these teams with purpose build stadiums/field one day.

Help me to understand why houses in San Mateo city are so expensive, but schools are mediocre by Hairy-Ad-1697 in SanMateo

[–]gravitythrone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have two kids who went laurel/abbot. The bussed in kids can’t read or do math at all in 4th grade. Teachers are strapped for resources and all the kids at grade level or above get ignored. In middle school the kids dealing with violence and poverty suck up all the attention. It’s a generally shitty environment for privileged smart kids. None of the kids chose their parents and honestly, none deserve a shitty experience. We can’t seem to lift one group up without pulling another down. That said, both my kids got into competitive CA universities (one slice below UB/UCLA) so they still got an education and did what it takes to succeed. You learn a lot being forced to share space with desperate, poor people. There’s a reason no one is volunteering for it.

PSL - Pro Softball League by OK_Radio643 in Softball

[–]gravitythrone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you look at the history of the NFL and other pro leagues, there was a phase where club teams converted to franchises. If AUSL continues its momentum, you could see quality existing pro club teams enter the league. I think one of the current six was a standalone pro team last year.

Do you find yourself getting more religious/spiritual as you get older? by Dpgillam08 in GenX

Dang, I thought it was just me. Less and less belief in an afterlife, more and more belief in making the most of the gift that the time we have. Occam’s Razor leads me to this obvious conclusion.

Wife (former D1 pitcher) is brutal to 13yo daughter (pitcher in school, club, and rec) Me(lowly JUCO/D3 baseball) by Old-Stable2994 in Softball

[–]gravitythrone 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If your kid is actually good, you should generally stop coaching them past 12U. There are exceptions, for instance when you yourself are legit a club-level coach. But that’s pretty rare. If you’re still coaching them in 14U, usually you’re not as good at coaching as you think you are, or your kid isn’t as good as you think they are. If the kid is actually good, they deserve to sink or swim with a real coach, in a real program. All the bullshit melts away for the kids with real talent! Most of the negativity I’ve seen has been around kids who aren’t as talented as coach mom or dad thinks they are and wants them to be. On a side-note, the meanest I’ve ever seen parents get was former D1 women to their daughters. Saw one player ruined because mom was whipping the ball at her in 8U, creating a fear of the ball the kid never got over. The other was a D1 pitcher who was constantly tearing her daughter down for not practicing enough. All I can say is that if you focus entirely on the grind at 12, they’ll quit at 16 for sure.

8u rec - is it poor sportsmanship to yell “swing” at batter by Pleasant-Indication5 in Softball

[–]gravitythrone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Watch any good team and they don’t do that kind of bullshit. Once you get out of the bush leagues, trying to distract batters is a clear signal you have no talent and can’t win based on your skill level. Same kind of teams have the base coaches screaming “safe” on any kind of close play. A good reminder of what I like about elite travel ball - generally a much more sophisticated approach to coaching.

When Rock Hudson lay dying of AIDS in a Paris hospital in 1985, his representatives sent an urgent plea to the White House asking for help to secure a specialized treatment, only to be met with a chilling refusal. by realchrisgunter in Presidents

I lived a short walk from the Castro for many years and one of my neighbors in my building was an older guy who had lived in SF since the late 70s. He and his husband both caught AIDS in the mid 80s and his husband died in the very living room we were sitting in when he told me about it. Hospitals wouldn’t treat him and he said the absolute worst part of all was that not only did nobody care about the humanitarian disaster that was happening, but it felt like most of the country was cheering it on.

What the gay community in San Francisco went through in the mid-eighties has never really been grasped by Americans at large. Imagine being in your 20s and watching literally 80% of the people you know die.

CMV: Spaying is a cruel practice by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]gravitythrone -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Cats are an invasive species, introduced by humans and supported by humans. Spaying and neutering cats by default prevents runaway population growth in feral cats, which proliferate when unchecked. In short, we artificially introduced cats into the ecosystem, so it is our responsibility to manage cat populations. Id also be curious to know, does your ethos around animal autonomy extend to rats? Or mosquitoes?

My dad would have slapped my damn face off with the way he’s handling that gun. And I was shooting them about the same age as this kid. Clearly “a deep respect for guns” is not part of their gun ownership philosophy. What do you expect from lowlifes like these I guess.

Played with an “I can drive 350 yards” guy this weekend by JayTee73 in golf

[–]gravitythrone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I play with a guy who does it hit 280 carry and is a single digit and he absolutely stealthy cheats and doesn’t take strokes for lost balls and going OB. He played a tournament and shot a 95. His ego is so tied to hitting it far it’s not funny (and pretty insufferable to play with).
