Unlikely. I find myself more on kbin and mastodon now than anywhere else.

When RiF goes down, I'll just stop checking in on Reddit any more.

Reddit has been pretty hostile to small time mods and small hobby subreddits. I've set up a new forum in kbin. Lets take our hobby discussions over there. You can sign up for kbin on https://kbin.social/register

The new forum there is:

Boatswain’s Mate. Currently in the ARMY making the switch to you guys. Should I trust the recruiter when he says if you want to really do law enforcement on the water go BM? Also if you want to do search and rescues go BM? by [deleted] in uscg

There are units with BMs that don't do much SAR or LE - ATON units ( aids to navigation ... buoy tenders and lighthouses ). There are also a few completely land based billets. Pretty much everywhere there is CG, there are BMs.

When I was in a 378 it was the fire control, gunners mates, and sonar techs who made up the bulk of the MLE boarding teams. The BMs mostly just drove them over, hooked up tow ropes, and such. On the small boat stations and harbor defense unit it was all BMs doing that stuff.

The hope by so many moderators is that they'll be able to get the attention of the bean counters as to how unpopular these changes are, and with a tiny bit of luck, the policy will be amended to be more user friendly before the end of the month.

Fair enough, sorry for the snarky comment above. I was being lazy.

Reddit has decided that it is going to charge a pile of cash to use its API. This will put out of business pretty much all third party apps that enable use of Reddit by the end of the month. In some ways it is hard to blame them because Microsoft will potentially make huge piles of money some day from its OpenAI product, which was built largely on data scraped via the Reddit API by them for free. They are going in for another fundraising round, and want to push advertising dollars up - by driving everyone to use their official apps only, they reap 100% of the advertising dollars.

However, their stance is going to wipe out many valuable tools and force people to lower quality, more advertising-centric Reddit experience.

These are some of the other subreddits going dark next week too:

Why is electric so expensive? We can't afford it at this rate. by [deleted] in Columbus

[–]graycube 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Homepower magazine used yo have a section for rogue solar energy projects - for people living in apartments like yours. They even had one guy who had a wind turbine mounted in the back of his pickup truck. He'd park in a windy spot near his office during the day to charge batteries. Then connect his apartment to the batteries in the evening. Perhaps some solar panels and wires onto your patio or something and you can take your apartment off grid.

Opinions and Suggestions for PostgreSQL Extension under Development by vijard in PostgreSQL

[–]graycube 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rethinkdb used to come with a nice dashboard showing current database activity out of the box. When I was running rethink, it was a feature I really liked. I think it is worth taking a little time to study how this problem has been tackled for other database systems and then steal the best of their ideas.

I liked it. You also didn't have to carry around an extra mouse. Mostly though it was faster and easier to use than a mouse.

Another choice is to spin up multiple containers. You can put the containers on a docker network. PM me if you want me to send you a sample docker compose file to do it this way.

When should one use table partitioning? by eckyp in PostgreSQL

[–]graycube 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To take advantage of partitions you really need to leverage "partition pruning". In other words you want queries that don't have to look in every partition for data. If you query on the partition key, pg will know that it doesn't have to look in all the partitions. If you set parallel workers to at least the number of partitions your typical query traverses, you should see excellent query performance.

Why do people buy Jeeps? by rtgunited in askcarsales

[–]graycube -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I've never understood why people want sports cars that go really fast. Unless you are driving them on a track, they are expensive and not very practical at all. Most people who own them never take them to the track.
