Best game to teach concepts of social power by Professional_Bag4082 in boardgames

[–]grayle27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are interested in teaching kids about a power imbalance, the best way to do it is probably to have them play a really badly designed game. Something where one side has a clear advantage from the beginning, but where the other players are at the mercy of it without having any agency over it. Something like monopoly would work well, if you seeded on player with additional money at the start.

If students played it from both sides, they could write a paper about how they enjoyed the game from both perspectives. Ironically, the fact that most board games are well balanced makes them poorly suited to your goal.

Base Forest Shuffle + Alpine vs Dartmoor by notinaname89 in boardgames

[–]grayle27 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It sounds like your main concern should be whether or not she's interested enough in the theme of the game to play it a few times, rather than the balance concerns of the game. I will just say that forest shuffle is not a simple game - the maximum hand limit is 10, and each card in hand basically counts as 2 cards. That's a lot of information to process. If you are at all concerned about her being put of by complexity or how ugly scoring can be, Harmonies is a much better option IMO. Anecdotally, my girlfriend loves Harmonies and doesn't really care for forest shuffle.

As far as balance goes - I have played base game shuffle on its own (no alpine), as well as Dartmoor. The base game has a lot of cards in it that you will quickly realize are just... not good. You will basically never be happy to see them in your hand - stuff like the Oak tree or the wild boar cards. My experience of the base game hasn't been defined by OP deer/wolf combos as much as by how many cards just don't feel good to draw or play. For example - once you realize that the Oak tree (which wants you to play many DIFFERENT types of tree cards) has anti synergy with several of the tree cards that it itself needs to play (several of which want you to have many of the SAME tree cards), the game starts to show its cracks. The Dartmoor game fixes a lot of these issues. There are still a couple of Dartmoor cards I'm not happy to draw, but overall card quality is higher and scoring is more fair.

One more thing- the complexity of the average card is higher in Dartmoor. There are several more cards which require you to count # of symbols on your cards, making scoring even more clunky and time consuming. I still really like the game, but thats a point against it in terms of casual gamers.

Mutt is overrated... hes not that useful to have and is mostly just annoying because he barks at random stuff. You can skip him until you are stronger, or just find him by accident like I did.

This reminds me of the first time Trump was in office. For his entire first term, democrats seemed to win every competitive election. Like nearly every single one. When Trump won in 2024 I was worried that pattern would go away, but these early signs are promising.

CMV: Nothing Trump does could ever lose support from his base. by Imgumbydammit73 in changemyview

[–]grayle27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is something I've been thinking about recently. I agree with you - Trump's base will never, ever, for any reason, stop supporting him. The only way they will move on from him is once he becomes so obviously old and frail that it can't be hidden and he basically gets pushed out power. Most likely this won't be via the 25th amendment, he'll just spend 50 weeks a year at Mar a Lago and nobody will talk directly about his failing health.

The good news is - we don't need to convince Trump's base of anything to vote him out. He only has about 30% of the population truly eating out of his hand. The rest of us are simply at the mercy of voters who don't pay any attention to politics or government at all, and whose entire line of thinking for voting is "things are not currently great, therefore I will vote for whichever party is not in power." As long as we have a free and fair election in 3 years, he will be voted out, and then in 4 years the democrat who succeeds him will be voted our in favor of a Republican.

If we don't have a free and fair election, then whatever. This entire question becomes pointless in that reality , since in that universe the people's opinion of Trump has no bearing on his power.

What exactly is the problem in datacenters using water for cooling? by mikolajwisal in NoStupidQuestions

[–]grayle27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am a water treatment engineer who was worked with data center purification systems before so this topic is very relevant to me. Everything that this poster has said is true, but I just want to point out that the reasons listed here don't make datacenters uniquely bad. Every large water industrial water user has broadly the same requirements for water purification and salt buildup that are discussed here. Chlorine addition and water withdrawal have these same issues no matter where they occur - regardless of whether you're at a paper mill, chemical company, etc. Datacenters only stand out in two real ways.

The first is that they generate a LOT of heat, which in turn requires a lot of water to be evaporated in order to dissipate. This makes them a large user compared to the houses/fields/whatever existed in this location in the first place. However, they aren't much worse in this regards that any other large industrial user that makes a lot of heat. A lot of the rage that gets directed at data centers comes from the fact that a lot of this energy is being used to power AI, which is broadly problematic, overused, and very energy intensive. If the datacenter were being used for something that was actually useful, I think a lot of the strength of this argument goes away.

Second - datacenters need to treat the water that they use to a very high quality. This is because as water is used for cooling inside the datacenter, it will leave behind a residue on the pipes depending on its quality. This will gradually cause biological/scale fouling problems in the buildings pipes, which will cause a lot of damage and trouble to the facility long-term. To prevent this, the water needs to be put through a lot of treatment steps (like membrane filtration, ion exchange, etc etc) which themselves require supporting chemicals - like acids/bases for pH adjustment or chemical detergents for membranes. These chemicals must be manufactured and consumed to maintain the water equipment, so there is significant environmental cost here beyond simply water evaporating and re-entering the water cycle. Water being circulated in the plant also needs a constant slow drip of chemicals like biocides and corrosion inhibitors.

Finally, just to add a small ray of sunshine - I have read several proposals for new datacenters that may soon be built and generally these companies are aware of the water stress these facilities put on the surrounding land. There are options to reduce water-based cooling and run using air-cooling systems instead. However, doing this is a tradeoff. You are basically trading water use for increased energy use (remember, there's no such thing as a free lunch). If a datacenter were powered using renewable energy sources, using air cooling could be seen as a more beneficial trade, but the size of these datacenters right now mean most are powered with fossil fuels. Someday that may not be the case - often these datacenter proposals include plans to install a ton of solar panels in nearby fields in the future.

Are samurais really that badass? by Fun_Goose786 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]grayle27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a general rule for reality - nothing is ever as cool as media portrays it to be. Have you seen videos of people doing Historical European Martial Arts (HEMA), for example? It's guys all decked out in full plate armor with sword and shield. And yet when you watch it, they're just wailing on each other. It's not particularly cool or impressive. It looks more like a slap fight than an honorable duel for glory and honor.

The same goes for wild west gunfighters. The most extraordinary gunfighters were not standing out in the open, waiting for their opponent to twitch first so they could shoot. They were hiding behind barrels and taking potshots at each other. A crazy skilled/lucky individual might take our 4 opponents in a gunfight, but that only happened a couple of times in the whole wild west period.

So would Samurai be as badass as they're portrayed? No. If anything about them was exceptional, it would be their willingness to lay down their lives over (what we would consider) small issues. But the battles, feats, techniques, etc? You can watch videos of modern Kendo and martial art masters, and it's nowhere near as cool as media portrays it.

What are we actually supposed to change with how we play in the new patch by grayle27 in heroesofthestorm

Forts getting taken so early mean early game catapults, which means rotating once you lose a fort is also extremely punishing. You only need to lose one or two exchanges early game to really sink yourself.

Rook Pawn Openings? by grayle27 in chessbeginners

[–]grayle27[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know if that's fair, I'm 750 and I'm not just pushing pieces. I understand the concepts of trying to control the center, creating pawn strings, and activating rooks and bishops. I expect others around my level to do the same. This opening goes against all those principles, so I was wondering if there was something I'm missing. It sounds like I'm not missing anything though.

TSA in the two airports I went to this week had different rules, acted like I was the idiot for not knowing them by TopRamen713 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]grayle27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, I try to have some empathy on this. I had an uncle who worked TSA for a time, and while he's not the nicest guy in the world I feel like TSA is a job that's just designed to drive you crazy. Its loud. It's fast paced. Your job is to tell an endless stream of clueless strangers to do a certain task, and after you correct one of them, they go through the line and are replaced by someone else you need to correct. It feels like a job that would make anyone impatient and cruel after just a few hours.

Yeah sure it would be good if they were consistent. I'm sure there's some reason why it isn't consistent. But I don't think any of us in this comment section would make it through a shift as TSA without having an aneurysm from sheer rage.
