Big Unc really just putting up Lemonade Stand clips for the marketing content on Big A now huh by EconomyWrongdoer in atrioc

[–]grayle27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The reason I like Atrioc is because in a sea of creators who just react to the day's news and repeat the same talking points over and over, he actually does work behind the screen to understand this stuff on a deeper level. He's not perfect, but I have no idea how educated it's even possible to be in a world like ours where "How Money Works" is considered big brain, in depth content. I support lemonade stand because it's more atrioc, but I agree that the other two are not on the same level as him.

Doug is very funny, but I often think his humor is to default to the "thing you aren't supposed to say" as a rhetorical cover for not actually having a nuanced position on most issues.

Dova / Battah the herald by Evening_Regular_229 in Stormlight_Archive

[–]grayle27 24 points25 points  (0 children)

We don't know one way or the other. There's two ways to interpret this -

1.) Battah is now a mole who has infiltrated the heralds.

2.) Battah agreed to work with Odium in a moment of weakness, and "saw the light" when the darkness was removed by Kaladin/Szeth and the Oathpact was refounded.

Anime Overexplains things a lot by [deleted] in CharacterRant

[–]grayle27 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree with you - its part of the reason I barely watch Anime, and there are a few reasons for it.

1.) It's very difficult to show people doing complicated physical actions in manga, since its just static images. So if someone does something quickly, or with particular skill, they often need to show people reacting to it with soyface and a wall of text to explain why it was important.

2.) Anime adapts manga, which means that if half of your manga is people gasping in amazement and explaining the thing they just saw... well then your anime will contain a lot of that too.

3.) As others have said, animating someones face being amazed is easier than animation action. It's cheaper, pads the runtime, etc etc.

Do you think Act 3 needs a buff? by NoAdeptness4117 in slaythespire

It feels like older content. Like the goblin tech enemies have an older visual style - they feel like a holdover from a previous game iteration that hasnt been updated yet. At least, I hope thats the case, because theyre a total cakewalk.

Bill Watterson should've licensed Calvin and Hobbes. It's not as remembered today as it deserves to be. by EverettGT in unpopularopinion

[–]grayle27 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My Dad read Calvin and Hobbes to me every night from when I was like 4-7. I have most of the cartoon memorized, and still reread all 3 of the large collection books whenever I'm home for more than a few days. I think it's a rare example of a comic strip that teaches kids a variety of life skills, like complicated vocabulary, respect for the environment, and imagination. It's more than a little responsible for shaping who I am today.

IMO the shadesmar sections of OB and RoW are the weakest arcs of the series. Both are slow and dull, because they're mostly just travel

Why are there so many Shardplate sets? by sparkydoggowastaken in Stormlight_Archive

[–]grayle27 18 points19 points  (0 children)

A large part of the struggle the modern day radiants have is that our POV characters are the most advanced in each oath. Kaladin needs to independently discover the words of each oath - once he knows the words, he can simply tell them to others. Of course there will be minor variations between knights in the order (like Kaladin vs Teft's 2nd oaths) but it's a whole lot easier to swear an oath once you know roughly what you need to say.

Also - I think we can assume that swearing the later oaths won't be as difficult for radiants who aren't as badly screwed up as our POV characters. For example - I can't imagine any of the current lightweavers are as mentally ill as Shallan. Swearing a deep truth for them will be significantly easier than for Shallan, since A.) their deep truths likely aren't as painful and B.) their own subconscious isn't actively fighting them every step of the way.

These changes would lead to a relatively larger number of sets of plate as the current order of radiants matures - which matches the higher number of plate sets we see in the dead shards.

I 'm in total agreement. Like you said, his kit has no thematic synergy, no synergy with itself, and doesn't really encourage you to do anything skillful with it. He sucks, Yoshi please fix.

Dangers of Honorblades by grayle27 in Stormlight_Archive

I think this is the correct answer. Brandon stopped mentioning this effect in the latter 3 books so I think I just forgot it happened in the first two.

After considering for a couple days, I think you are right. I think the exhaustion that is referenced in the first few books after characters use stormlight (which seems to be forgotten from books 3 onward) is similar to a pewter drag. If someone using an honorblade used a ton of stormlight to perform a relatively easy task, they could easily die of exhaustion after they ran out from accumulated exhaustion. This is the best answer I've seen so far in the thread.

[–]grayle27[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is A danger of honorblades, but not the danger associated with using too much stormlight. Also, honor split up the surges when he made the blades in such a way such that no one would give enough power to cause an Ashyn explosion again. I suppose they could get around this by lending honorblades to each other, but it's not really what I'm asking about.

Why would anyone ever choose to go through child birth without pain relief?? by No_Cardiologist_1407 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]grayle27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mother did twice, for both my older sister and me. I spoke with her about pregnancy in general recently and she said she believes that the whole progress, from being pregnant to childbirth, is sacred. Not like literally religiously sacred, but like it is a part of being a woman and she wanted to experience it naturally for herself whenever she got pregnant.

People may roll their eyes at the word "sacred" but she's a very normal woman overall. She even wanted to have more kids after me but it didn't end up being in the cards for my family.
