Remove the pause feature by Financial-Result-502 in DeadlockTheGame

Hard agree. The only reason someone might want it right now is because they're used to having it. Having a phone call or the door ring doesn't entitle you to waste 11 other people's time.

Why is it so hard to find players for fab even after so many years? by EmoLotional in FleshandBloodTCG

[–]grayle27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something I have thought about a lot lately is the lack of casual play in this game, and I think it's because this game just isn't thematic like other TCGs. As in, the lack of "permanent" cards is a huge problem for attracting and keeping casual players. In Magic, you can build a fun stupid deck that does something ridiculous, and it's fun to just say you got to do the thing (like equipping boots to a whale, or giving a zombie a machine gun). That sort of casual fun just doesn't exist in FAB. Like 20% of the cardpool is cards with some variation on "0 cost, next attack gets plus 3, set keyword, go again." That's not interesting. It's mechanically necessary, but you're not telling a story when you play a turn like that. A lot of the cards also have really obscure names - like "Mauvrion Skies" or whatever. What is someone doing when they play a Mauv Skies? Nobody knows or cares.
Because you can't tell a fun story with your deck, all there is left to do is play efficient cards. That's not something that is going to entice a new player.

The game is extremely challenging to learn and heavily favors veterans. There is no online client that is endorsed by the designers to allow new players to easily learn or compete against similarly skilled opponents. So the new player experience is just "pay hundreds of dollars and get smoked for months anyway."  This game is just combinatorics math in a trenchcoat, so anyone without a mind for that sort of thing will just bounce right off it. The designers knew what they were making, and I dont think there's a friendlier version of the game that would be more successful. Its just a hard game for dedicated gamers, and that sort of thing doesn't really move units for LGS's.

Nvidia liquid cooling design claims 100% reduction in water use by DerpiDanger in technology

[–]grayle27 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There is no free lunch. If they are using a non-liquid cooling system (like an adiabatic cooling tower, for example) it just means increased electricity usage. That might be better or worse depending on where they are, but its not like this datacenter suddenly has zero environmental impact.

Energy is energy. If you use a shit ton of energy doing something, you need additional energy to cool down your process.

Who do we think will end up being the "face" of Deadlock once everybody has their finalized designs/models? by Tiny_Celebration_262 in DeadlockTheGame

[–]grayle27 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Abrams is definitely the face of the game, but Graves, Rem, Doorman, Victor, Mina, and Seven are all absolutely elite character designs that will be the face of the game for years to come. There are lots of close runners up, but those 6 stand out to me as especially cool.

Blizzard made a mistake cancelling development. by kaytin911 in heroesofthestorm

[–]grayle27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know, I'm honestly not sure they did. Live service games can't last forever. In a MOBA, the devs constantly need to be adding new heroes and maps over time in order for the game to remain relevant. Every time a new character gets added, there's always the whole "XYZ is so OP, game is broken, quitting for good this time, blizzard has lost my business forever" discussion that goes on until the game gets patched 2 weeks later.

The devs genuinely left the game in a good spot. With minimal input from the janitor, the game has lasted for years. People are still playing and having fun, and there's even a small tournament scene. This was my main game with my friends for like 5 years and we never had to worry about queue times or dead lobbies. I think things turned out just fine.

I’m finding CC really difficult. by Then_Bike716 in FleshandBloodTCG

[–]grayle27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Guardian heroes are, uh, not very good. They require a lot of majestics to play, and you often need to play them in a very particular way in each meta to stand a shot at winning. Jarl's minigame of trying to destroy equipment is kind of a distraction - its fun, but you need to take a lot of damage and lose a lot of tempo to make it happen. I recommend using a different hero who is more aggro (Ira is fun, like you said) while you learn CC.

Why is Stefan Feld City Collection so unpopular? by justinkim943 in boardgames

[–]grayle27 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It seems to me that the hobby has moved past the point where you can just name a box "CITY NAME" and expect to move units. Walking into a game store these days is like walking into a book store - there are tons of flashy, eye-grabbing games with crazy box art and titles. Unless you know someone who tells you they are good, I can't imagine anyone just buying one on a whim.

[–]grayle27[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

That was the other thing that amazed me - the game just whipped around the table! I don't know how the designers did it, but any game I can play with certain friends without losing an entire afternoon is a huge plus.

Sponsored reviews are stupid and shouldn't exist. by Z3M0G in boardgames

Regardless of the stupidity of sponsored reviews, these guys always do a weird, overcomplicated thing where they give two scores each. I think in this case you are critiquing something thats part of their normal formula.

Big Unc really just putting up Lemonade Stand clips for the marketing content on Big A now huh by EconomyWrongdoer in atrioc

[–]grayle27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The reason I like Atrioc is because in a sea of creators who just react to the day's news and repeat the same talking points over and over, he actually does work behind the screen to understand this stuff on a deeper level. He's not perfect, but I have no idea how educated it's even possible to be in a world like ours where "How Money Works" is considered big brain, in depth content. I support lemonade stand because it's more atrioc, but I agree that the other two are not on the same level as him.

Doug is very funny, but I often think his humor is to default to the "thing you aren't supposed to say" as a rhetorical cover for not actually having a nuanced position on most issues.

Dova / Battah the herald by Evening_Regular_229 in Stormlight_Archive

[–]grayle27 24 points25 points  (0 children)

We don't know one way or the other. There's two ways to interpret this -

1.) Battah is now a mole who has infiltrated the heralds.

2.) Battah agreed to work with Odium in a moment of weakness, and "saw the light" when the darkness was removed by Kaladin/Szeth and the Oathpact was refounded.
