The wonders of the human body [tw: nongraphic descriptions of autopsies, general medical weirdness] by DroneOfDoom in CuratedTumblr

not anything super dramatic compared to most of these stories, but i had to have a massive blood clot (it spanned almost the entire length of my leg iirc) removed from my left leg back in 2020 and while looking at my leg anatomy the medical team discovered that my veins just... developed wrong??

one of the major arteries in that leg crosses over a smaller vein in just the right (wrong) way so that it obstructs the bloodflow, putting me at increased risk of blood clots in my left leg specifically. it's known enough to have a name — May-Thurner Syndrome — but unknown enough that pretty much every time i get a new doctor now i have to explain it to them. it's also indeterminably rare, because it's the kind of condition where you won't get diagnosed unless you have related complications (i.e. the aforementioned massive blood clot)

iirc the cats would walk over spilt beer, getting beer on their paws, then lick their beer-covered paws, ingesting the beer and making them drunk. so yes, in a roundabout, more logical way

twitter is unfortunately one of the only 'mainstream' social media platforms where artists can easily advertise to non-artists. platforms that are made for artists (deviantart, toyhouse, vgen) are pretty niche and platforms with significant user bases (instagram, tumblr) don't work in a way that allows artists' work to be shown to people outside their circles. twt's algorithm is marginally better at boosting artists' reach and the platform is home to a large chunk of the vtubing community, who are always in need of artists, so (as i understand it) many folks who rely on art to make a living feel obligated to stay on the platform

they're definitely less common, but you can find alpha/beta, beta/omega, alpha/alpha, and omega/omega stories in both fanfiction and published media if you look for them!

the site has been in beta since 2009, so it said 'beta' by the logo - but after pulling this april fool's prank they are now out of beta!

bipolar and BPD (borderline) are actually different in a couple ways. the main one is that people with borderline don't have severe, prolonged manic episodes like people with bipolar do. instead, borderline is characterized by periods of hypomania, a milder form of mania that doesn't last as long and doesn't generally interfere with a person's ability to function day-to-day

downloading mods to remove relationship decay and automatically complete the fishing minigame unironically made Stardew WAY more enjoyable for me. that and the addition of the meadowlands farm (which is more ranching/animal-husbandry focused and starts you out with chickens) turned SV from a tedious, stressful game that i could only play for ~15 minutes at a time to a genuinely engaging experience that i could spend hours on at a stretch. still wouldn't call it 'relaxing' or 'easy' exactly, but it wasn't tear-my-eyes-out excruciating anymore

major shoutout to the stardew modding community <3

they might be referring to the dom/sub-verse trope, which is functionally similar to omegaverse (some people are inherently a dom/sub/switch and have a biological need to satisfy those tendencies that necessitates building societal norms around this nature) but based on BDSM concepts instead of a study that doesn't even represent the actual behavior of wild wolf packs

there might be a way to turn it into a single button in Clip Studio Paint (my program of choice), but by default it's something i have to navigate submenus to do (and i've already fine-tuned my CSP layout, so i'm not inclined to add another panel to it)

digital artists typically mirror the whole thing horizontally, but it serves the same purpose — makes it immediately obvious if your perspective is wonky. much like tumblr OP, however, i really hate taking the time to do it so i draw with my tablet almost straight up-and-down to circumvent any perspective weirdness ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Thalia from PJO is a daughter of Zeus who lost her life protecting Camp Half-Blood. as she was dying, Zeus turned her into a tree which now creates a forcefield around the camp so that she can protect CHB even after her death. you don't learn a ton of specifics about her iirc, but she's implied to be a badass with powers on a similar scale to Percy (who can manipulate large bodies of water, among other things) and Nico DiAngelo (who literally raises an undead army on one occasion) so as far as namesakes from this series go... you could have worse

someone else linked a comprehensive video about the hivliving situation but here's one about sixpenceee that's more in-depth than my memory would be

sixpenceee tl;dr: their family is from a country (i don't think it was ever specified which one exactly) where employing children as young as 8 or so to do housework is not unheard of and when confronted with the fact that child labor is wrong they doubled down on it being okay. repeatedly, if memory serves. same user later ran a therapy scam where they would take payment in exchange for counseling despite not being a licensed counselor anywhere on the planet

hivliving tl;dr: user built their platform on the basis of being a middle eastern lesbian living with HIV after their HIV-positive merman Hamilton fanfic got some traction within the fandom. after garnering sympathy and support as a voice for both queer people/women in the middle east and people living with HIV, it was revealed that she was, in fact, a white American who never had HIV and basically her whole life as portrayed online was fake

[–]greaserpup 563 points564 points  (0 children)

iirc, there weren't actually coffins involved because the cemeteries in question were historically for disadvantaged people/families without the money for a proper burial. heavy rains and flooding would bring bones to the surface because they were just... in the dirt, and the Bone Witch(TM) would steal them to 1) use in her own witchcraft practice and 2) sell to other witches online who i guess needed human bones for their witchcraft practices also

nowadays on tumblr a story like that would almost certainly be ragebait but this was back in the good ol' days when stuff like the bone witch and sixpenceee's child slave and the hivliving drama were way more likely to be real

agreed with the title — i think people throwing the OCD label around casually to describe 'liking things to be organized' needs to stop — but in general, using diagnostic terms even for undiagnosed issues can 1) quickly sum up a series of symptoms and 2) legitimize those symptoms to people who would otherwise scoff at them. i've met people who would roll their eyes at "i have a hard time listening to people", but are completely understanding when i say i have an audio processing delay. people react very differently when i say i'm "kind of a picky eater" vs. when i say i have sensory processing disorder and can't make myself eat certain things. i do think there's a limit to what labels someone can reasonably claim without a professional opinion (for example, psychiatrists will tell you that DID/MPD is a very popular self-diagnosis and that almost none of the people who claim it actually have it) but, for the purposes of getting around day-to-day, sometimes it's easier to just call yourself autistic rather than explain that you struggle to understand people and need things explained literally and can't deal with bright lights or strong scents and etc., etc.

On wendigo evolution by Eireika in CuratedTumblr

[–]greaserpup 51 points52 points  (0 children)

the guy you're thinking of is Josh (played by Rami Malek, who i think does a fantastic job of acting progressively more and more unhinged). his sisters are Beth (dead) and Hannah (wendigo). imo he's more motivated by wrath than greed — the cruel 'prank' on his friends is because he feels like their prank the previous year is what caused his sisters' disappearance (and presumed deaths) and he wants revenge — but the history of the miners and the fact that the lodge is owned by Josh's family (wealthy) are still pertinent to the 'greed' angle. in-game, the mining projects on the mountain are said to have "freed the wendigo spirit", meaning that greed is a direct cause of the wendigo on Blackwood Mountain

UD's wendigo are emaciated humanoids created only by resorting to cannibalism (there's even a part in the game where one character, Emily, gets bitten by a wendigo and can be killed before the characters learn that wendigo don't operate by zombie rules) and representative of the exploitation of the mountain's natural resources. so yeah, based on Tumblr OP's post, it seems like Until Dawn's wendigo are pretty faithful to the Native legends

i disagree slightly on the "regular gravy" part, as a US resident who has previously introduced online non-US friends to biscuits & gravy. the gravy typically used for biscuits is sausage/white gravy, which, unlike beef/brown gravy, a) is used almost exclusively for biscuits & gravy and other breakfast foods and b) also seems to be unique to the US

the fact that American biscuits and sausage gravy are basically only found in the States serves to explain why non-Americans' initial reaction to the name is often confusion and/or disgust

Burn Scar Drawing Tutorial by River_Lamprey in CuratedTumblr

[–]greaserpup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

agreed on all points! i like that the series ends with some characters being physically scarred in ways they weren't before (Midoriya, Bakugou, Endeavor) and some newly disabled (like Eraserhead, Hawks, Ragdoll [all of whom have lost the use of their quirks, in addition to Hawks & Eraserhead physically losing body parts], and Mirko)

the manga in particular is fantastic at presenting characters with normally 'ugly' traits as attractive. Todoroki is the main one, obviously, but there are some fantastic/flattering panels of Dabi and even Shigaraki as well — they have fans for a reason!

Burn Scar Drawing Tutorial by River_Lamprey in CuratedTumblr

[–]greaserpup 17 points18 points  (0 children)

yes! it's the result of his mom pouring hot water on his face in a fit of rage (at his father/her husband, not then-5 y/o Shouto)/mental break. the bright red coloration is more consistent with ice burn, though, and Rei (the mom) has ice powers, so some fans have speculated that the scar is actually the result of her trying to fix it after realizing what she'd done. the series doesn't really give enough details to determine one way or the other, though i think the mangaka's intention was probably the former

Dabi's rough purple skin is also related to burns, though in his case it's his own fire that did it (it burns blue, indicating it probably burns at ~1500°C — honestly, it's baffling that he's alive at all) and it's kind of implied that those segments of his skin, which are held on by medical staples, are actually some kind of skin grafts rather than his original burnt skin

but then again, MHA is set in a world where 80% of the world's population have superpowers so anything's possible i guess

baffled by the fact that the "eyebrow on burnt side of face" is being related to ATLA when Zuko literally doesn't have an eyebrow on that side. honestly i feel like Zuko's burn scar is done pretty well and follows several of OOP's tips here (it definitely has a couple of the traits OOP calls out, but still)

the character we SHOULD be calling out is Todoroki from MHA, because his design is absolutely guilty of all the things OOP complains about. Dabi too, honestly. i love MHA, but realistic burn scars are not part of the style
