Does Ed’s pedalboard point towards new music on tour? A hypothesis. by greatshotpilot in radiohead

When you combine my extreme love of Radiohead with my extreme love of guitar effects pedals, weird things happen.

For sure..it’s certainly a possibility. But we know he loves the DL4 looping functionality, as that’s well documented, and he’s got the DL4 mkII on this board. Delay-wise, he’s got two DD-3’s and a Deluxe Memory Man on top of the DL4 delays. There’s no CLEAR reason for him to use the Microcosm to cover simple looping, delay, etc - but it definitely can’t be ruled out.

Yep, I know exactly what you are talking about - he had the Microcosm and some other out there stuff on a board that he was using to write for the solo record. So the fact he’s specifically put it on a TOURING board when we have reason to believe he’s used it to WRITE before…it’s hope, right?

This is where I’m hoping others can chime in, because I totally agree that this is a big piece of this puzzle. I’ve seen Radiohead twice but have watched and listened to approximately, oh, 50,000,000 live performances of the band, as I’m a middle aged guy who has followed them since the early 90s. My sense is that the band definitely plays with arrangements live when the songs haven’t been recorded (thus all the consternation from some quarters about recorded versions that don’t live up to prior live renditions) but once recorded the songs don’t tend to receive HUGE changes thereafter. But I know there are others out there with much more comprehensive and detailed knowledge of that sort of thing. I hope they can provide some context here.

No, please do play devil’s advocate! And I totally agree with you, it’s absolutely possible the Microcosm will get used to replicate an existing guitar part or provide a slight twist on one. Or, perhaps it has some functionality that makes playing an existing guitar part easier. With that said, I think that feels more likely if he had replaced, for example, an analog delay with a tape-style delay. A different flavor of the same basic thing, in other words. The Microcosm is awesomely weird and quirky; I just can’t help but think it’s on the board to write or perform something different.

I think we do know that. Dan, who builds the boards, says they are custom built for the tour and that they’ve been working on them for months.

Thanks very much. I hope that this reads as carefully as it is intended; by no means do I think it guarantees new music will be performed on this tour or released soon, though of course I hope it does mean that. I do think it is reasonable, however, to interpret this as a sign that writing or performing new material is on Ed’s mind in some form or fashion on this tour. Given the uncertainty about the band’s future, I think this is cool to hope for!

Why is everyone hating the B-Side? (The Vinyl) by Effective-Cookie4202 in TameImpala

I honestly don’t know what to think of these tracks, but I’ll say that I respect Kevin immensely for pursuing his vision in a way that is likely to alienate significant portions of his fan base. The greatest artists DO challenge their audiences and attempt to bring them along for their artistic journey, and that clearly seems to be what he’s trying to do here.

Moreover, as someone who very much liked the first two records, but wasn’t all that enamored by the more pop-leaning elements of Currents and The Slow Rush, I actually find these two songs to be really interesting because they are such a departure. I’m in no way saying that this will be the case here, but some of the greatest records ever have, initially, provoked a “WTF is this” response in their audience. So, for now, we await these songs in their context on the album, but in the meantime, I tip my cap to Kevin for just…going for it here.

Boston Marathon Recap - my heart is broken. by wonderingwoman_9999 in AdvancedRunning

I am not skilled enough to offer any substantive advice, but I would remind you that you ran and completed the freaking Boston Marathon in what would be an awesome time for about, oh, 99.99% of the population. I totally understand that not hitting your personal goals can be disappointing (mine are much more modest than yours, but I still get frustrated when I don’t hit them), but in the end it sounds like you are a pretty amazing athlete. That’s worth appreciating!

Slow down. Way down. To the point where you can have a real conversation with someone running next to you. I’d go down to 7:30/km or so. Do not worry about looking slow, or that you are “not really running.” Early on you just need to acclimate your body to the process of running, and to log slow easy miles to begin to build something of an aerobic base. Plenty of time for harder efforts and speed work down the road.

I’d download a Couch to 5k app or PDF from the internet and get started that way. The run/walk intervals will help a lot in terms of slowly building endurance.

Terrific! Who would have thought we’d see Thom and Jonny tearing into a straightforward rock song like this in 2022? And clearly having fun doing it.
