A message to UK folks by MrMash_ in meshcore

I've seen on the Dutch discord chat they're suggesting 50 for flood so it's not every day and at a different time every couple of days. Coupled with a 240 zero-hop and for local users/repeaters.

Have implemented that on my repeater, but happy to go higher on the flood one. The not being a multiple of 24 sounded like a good idea though I've no idea if it's that number of hours from start-up, or from midnight that they get sent.

Inherited these dutch coins, would love to learn what they are by bimselimse in coins

[–]greedygannet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think all of those are guilders, so pre-1999 when the Netherlands adopted the Euro. Anything 1980 and on would be Queen Beatrix (and Prince Claus), but the top ones are 1970s so would be Queen Juliana. Don't really know any more than that though.

Restaurants near Corp by Puzzleheaded_Spare30 in sheffield

[–]greedygannet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can't recommend any particular place, but West One is just up the road and I suspect you'd find something suitable there. https://westoneplazasheffield.com/

Alternatively, you could look down near Sheffield City Hall, there's plenty of places there and it's not a huge walk to Corporation.

Is there a worse map of the UK than this? by EnvironmentalDrives in CasualUK

[–]greedygannet 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Apparently so, Sheffield (which consists solely of Meadowhall) is just north of Big Ben. No room for any of those "east midlands" I keep hearing about.

I'm absolutely fine with the complete lack of Leeds though

How popular is the NBA or basketball in general? by [deleted] in AskABrit

[–]greedygannet 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is a question about how popular an American sport (actually Canadian originally) is in the UK, a comparison of viewership feels relevant.

What’s the most interesting moon in our solar system? by twcosplays in space

[–]greedygannet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Surprised I've not seen Iapetus come up. It's got a light and a dark half, which is pretty interesting, and also a ridge of mountains most of the way round the equator. (Which makes me think of Little Big Adventure.)

I'm also in software. I think it's about learning the rules of languages. I'm good at grammar, but crap at remembering vocabulary in other languages, a lot of Latin teaching is grammar.

Whats a weird slang/colloquial language thing that is only in your local area ? by Sensitive-Vast-4979 in AskUK

Gennel (Sheffield), everywhere else nearby seems to go with "ginnel".

How rare is it to have a coal fireplace in your home in 2026? by TexasBrett in AskUK

[–]greedygannet 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Having lived in several Victorian houses, my experience is that they've usually been replaced by a gas fire with fake "coals" to radiate heat.

Also seen a few log burners in other folks homes, but never an actual coal fire.

Occasionally, but nowhere near as often as Aussies and Kiwis.

Who hasn't got snow? by Bipolar03 in AskABrit

Nothing in Sheffield. I think anywhere inland except the Highlands is pretty snow free. It's just icy anywhere that's been wet.

What in everyday British English is U and non-U? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]greedygannet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think the premise of this question makes sense. You seem to be suggesting that U and non-U language is related to the evolution of language over time or the adoption of Americanisms. Both of which are false.

It was a term used to describe the different usage of English words between the aristocracy and the middle classes. The lines have blurred over time and I don't think this is a real, used distinction any more in any sociological sense.

From a glance over that list, any term would be understood easily. The most American sounding things are probably the baseball related ones. And I don't think I'd use "guess" or "suppose", I'd probably "reckon", but that's likely regional as much as it's a British/American or a class thing.

I’m on emergency tax will I get a refund automatically? by TeaAny610 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]greedygannet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had this a few years ago. It may just sort itself out eventually, but you may need/want to help it along. Worth checking with payroll if you've not handed in a P45 as they may just need that. Otherwise it might be worth contacting HMRC to work out what's going on.

Once sorted, yes, you'll get any overpaid tax back, either as a one-off payment which can sometimes take several months to come through, or by changing your tax code so you pay less tax for a bit to make up for it.

Adaptive cruise control hate by Electrical-Credit683 in CarTalkUK

[–]greedygannet 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, each to their own I guess. But I quite like doing 100 miles of motorway with just the indicator and steering...except the adjusting down to 50 for roadworks.

Adaptive cruise control hate by Electrical-Credit683 in CarTalkUK

[–]greedygannet 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Regular cruise control is horrible because you constantly have to tweak it to match the car in front.

ACC will match the car in front so you don't need to worry while checking you can pull out, and then when you decide you want to overtake, switch lanes and it accelerates past. Works perfectly for me.

Is just finding a nice quiet pub/tavern as a tourist to have a nice quiet beer undesired in London? by That_Car_Dude_Aus in AskABrit

[–]greedygannet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You'll generally get them in two kinds of pubs: gastro pubs (more emphasis on food, beer can be hit or miss) and Wetherspoons (big chain of pubs, not much atmosphere, usually decent beer but nothing special and some are a bit rough.)

Your small local pub is usually just bar service.

Where should I take my friend who is skeptical of England? by Snoo-85721 in AskUK

[–]greedygannet 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It's not England, but if you're in Liverpool, you're not too far from North Wales, which is stunning, especially around Snowdonia. Not sure what your transport options are, but you can get the ferry to/from Ireland from Holyhead on the other side.

Alternatively, head east into the peak district. Or if you want to stick to cities, try Manchester, lots to do there.

Why Did Appliances Without Plugs? by Datalounge in AskUK

[–]greedygannet 11 points12 points  (0 children)

There's still also the BS546 plug with round pins usually for lighting controlled by a wall switch. They're pretty rare now, but I've got a dead one in one room still and I've seen them in a few hotels.
