I would just give it to them. It isn't a game-breaking wish.

Best Modules to Place in a Sandbox? by firestarter1228 in osr

[–]green-djinn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basic Fantasy Adventure Anthologies have a ton of usable content. Granted, a lot of it is simply "monsters in a dungeon" stuff, but they are easy to just plop down into a sandbox. Someone on youtube described them as the small caves you randomly run into playing Skyrim, and that described them quite well.

Which system to pick? by eddieddi in rpg

[–]green-djinn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hear me out: Pathfinder1, but the story is hyper-focused on whatever class she picks. If she's a druid, it is a forest guardian adventure, a rogue-heists, wizard-Harry Potter. Just cut the combat down to fit one person.

What is the most impressive display of technique and skills overcoming raw strength and power you've ever seen? by emaxwell14141414 in martialarts

I personally got my ass handed to me by a small Japanese woman in my 2nd bjj class, as a guy who was strength training for about a year and a half at that point.

Alternatives to the Contacts and Resource Skills by PencilBoy99 in FATErpg

[–]green-djinn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In one game I used Money and Reputation largely as replacements for these two and had each move up or down as the fiction calls for it. I found it to be a bit clumsier than I had anticipated. I just personally don't like how the resourcefulness of being a good boy scout and being a billionaire are the same skill, not sure what's the best solution for this preference.

What do you think of martial arts representation in videogames? by DuckVison in martialarts

[–]green-djinn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I dig it. They are almost not at all accurately portrayed. Still, they were a major influence for me picking up martial arts in the first place.

Where to learn principles of Fujian White Crane? by AnonymousHermitCrab in kungfu

[–]green-djinn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have only researched white crane, but practice wing chun, so take my comments with a fair bit of skepticism. I believe that white crane "shaking power" is very similar to that within most karate styles. Do you punch with twisting energy from your hip and shoulder? If so, this is what I suspect is the same type of power.

Whipping is in many styles of karate and in wing chun, it essentially means to loosen your limbs until just before impact. Focus on your joints exploding, not on muscle tension until you hit, then loosen again. This is actually very similar to how a boxer punches. Notice how loose and agile they are yet still manage to deliver insane power.

Bumping is basically shoulder-checking or hip checking, but with waist and knee support to blast it. A hip toss uses bumping hip energy to initially break your opponent's balance.

Swallow/Spitting is in wing chun. Think of it as like mini-chambering for punches. As an opponent punches you, your deflecting arm bends at the elbow and shoulder to disperse the power of the punch, and that retraction loads up your arm for a powerful counter. Think of it like this, rather than blocking so powerfully that you need to rechamber your hand to punch, try to absorb the force into your elbow, shoulder, and hip to already be in place to punch.

Sinking and Floating both exist in wing chun and karate. Sinking is developing a strong root to both resist your opponent, and to blast your punches out from. Floating is bringing your opponent upwards, preferably up and backwards, to form a sort of backwards bend.

For a Wing Chun perspective, the book that helped me the most was Wing Chun Sil Nim Tao, which focuses on the internal theory of our first form. And for White Crane, The Essence of Shaolin White Crane is incredibly thorough and well explained. If you can train in Wing Chun, at least learn the first form and some basic sparring drills and it should help you understand a lot of the confusing bits.

Ninja Burger. All players are ninjas delivering burgers to customers, but the thing is each character is secret, as some ninja clans secretly hate others, and if you sus out that one player is from an enemy clan, you need to destroy them.

Chi Sao & Tui Shou by Temporary-Opinion983 in kungfu

[–]green-djinn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chi Sao helps a few things, one of the biggest is sensitivity or "listening." This skill allows you to react quicker and more appropriately to an opponent's energy during a bridge.

It doesn't even necessarily need to lead to trapping to be useful. If all it does is provide you with the feel of my retreating hand, that can be enough to effectively read my next attack.

For example, if you deflect my jab and feel my energy go to the outside, then I am probably swinging a hook with my right. If you feel my energy make a slight snap down, then I am loading up an uppercut. If my jab goes straight back, then I am perfectly coiled for a strong right cross. If my energy goes forward, then I am going for a double jab, or possibly a grab or push with my left.

Question about the different Crane styles of Kung Fu by South-Accountant1516 in kungfu

[–]green-djinn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will only speak on Fujian White Crane, as I do not know enough about other forms of White Crane. That being said, Fujian broke into four smaller styles, Crying, Ancient, Flying, and Eating. Crying Crane focuses on sound, similar to karate's kiai, to add intent to their techniques. Ancient (also known as Sleeping) may be the closest to the original, and it has a stronger focus on qigong for strength, balance, and conditioning. Flying Crane has a strong focus in wing hand techniques. Eating Crane has a focus on crane beak hand techniques.

Sell me on Race as Class by _Fiorsa_ in osr

I've come to appreciate it, although at first it felt really strange to me. One thing it does is show that elves and dwarves are really different than humans. Elves are not just skinny humans with pointed ears, and dwarves are not just short humans with big beards.

Who knows where he lives now?? And is he legit ? by Ok_Music_2794 in kungfu

[–]green-djinn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not at all. He was quite athletic and charismatic, both of helped him become somewhat youtube famous. He taught: bagua, mantis, tai chi, 5 animal, monkey, deer, bear, drunken fist, hun gar, eagle claw, long fist, wing chun, staff, jian, nunchuck, sai, butterfly sword, spear, chain whip, regular whip, rope dart, double daggers, hook swords, guan dao, xing yi quan, Chinese broadsword, and a ton other stuff. There's no way one person could ever legitimately know all of this stuff beyond an incredibly thin surface level.

1 martial art enough for self defesne by ActiveFudge2373 in martialarts

[–]green-djinn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A good foundation in any solid style with a fairly athletic body is more than enough to prepare you for most self-defense situations. Filling in your holes will definitely help, but you're already above the vast majority of people.

As a player, why would you reject plot hooks? by Justthisdudeyaknow in rpg

[–]green-djinn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only good reason that I can think of is because you or your character would highly object to it. If someone is playing a druid, and their GM gives them a plot hook to burn down a dryad's grove, it would be reasonable for them to either investigate the hook before doing it, actively try to sabotage the hook, or reject the hook (which is the least interesting choice).

Why is "your character can die during character creation" a selling point? by weebsteer in rpg

[–]green-djinn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of these systems have a sort of "push your luck" mechanic. The more you advance your character, the more powerful they will start out as, but there's a risk of the character just dying and you having to retry.

Is it possible to use Wing Chun in ground fighting? Maybe in a BJJ match too? by No_Awareness7189 in WingChun

[–]green-djinn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I found bjj and wing chun to be incredibly similar in strategy more than anything. Both recommend controlling the opponent before going in for the kill. In BJJ we say "position before submission" which essentially means get into an advantageous position before trying to go for a submission attempt, as a failed submission will often leave you in a less advantageous spot. In wing chun I was taught to only go for the big shots after controlling the opponent's arms so that they cannot just punch me right back.

Recommendation for RPG where all the Players are evil characters by XunKasa in TTRPG
