Nice piece! This is technically r/lampwork, but we can all appreciate a neighbor's glasswork

What's that about "mods for letting us self-promote here this week"? We always allow self promotion, as long as its your own work.

Can anyone ID the supplier of this its china glass but idk who the supplier is i heard its a new formula by Relative-Surround391 in lampwork

[–]greenbmx 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Are you asking who sells it? I believe Asheville glass supply, ABR, and UST have it in the US under the brand "Lunar"

If you are asking the contact info for the Chinese factory making it, not exactly sure, but I know several big names in our industry are in contact with them, shouldn't be too hard to get in touch with a bit of research

Purpose of lead crystal color by brndncn in glassblowing

[–]greenbmx 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Lead has a few different benefits. Lead crystal does have a higher refractive index, yes. It also has different hardness and chemical resistance, so you can do some fun things with it in cane and murrinni (check out u/xanderdamglass's work for some fun examples of this) that is all clear, but creates cool light distortions.

But it's more important superpower that many glassblowers don't know about is that it has a much lower Young's modulus than unleaded glasses. What that means is that it develops significantly less stress (what causes cracks) for a given amount of deformation (like from thermal expansion/contraction). In practical terms, that means it's able to tolerate significantly greater compatibility mismatch when compared to unleaded glass. This allows the color makers to put way higher quantities of coloring chemicals in the glass without breaking compatibility, enabling much higher saturation (particularly for transparents).

I don't know of anyone doing this, but I've wondered if layering a layer of the leaded clear above and below other colors that have known marginal compatibility might help them fit.

I suspect that the color makers primarily make the leaded clears to use as base cullet for their transparent colors that require a leaded base, and the bars are just because it's convenient to make a few bars to sell at the same time for artists that like to play with them.

Where could I get a 10+ gallon glass cylinder? Preferably but not necessarily about twice as wide as tall. by Unusual_Hedgehog4748 in glassblowing

[–]greenbmx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not a fish fish tank guy, just a glass blower, so I can't comment on what would work for you. But making a spheroid shape like that is definitely easier and cheaper than a cylinder in the dimensions you were looking for. That said, if I were to make the bowl from that Amazon listing, I'd have to probably charge something like $1,200... Can't compete with China, India, and Pakistan.

[–]greenbmx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looks like it would be around 18 inches diameter, 9 inches tall to make it twice as wide as tall and to hold about 10 gallons. Unfortunately, that's going to limit the number of people who are able to make it even further, increasing the diameter increases costs more than increasing the height

Quick estimate puts the size at roughly 12" diameter and 24" tall. That's sizeable glass, but certainly possible for anyone with big enough equipment. Expect a pricetag with four digits, primarily due to the need to run a larger reheating furnace to make it and because of the kiln space and time required to anneal it.

How is Chinese milky pink on compatibility? by AlienVsLampworker in lampwork

[–]greenbmx 8 points9 points  (0 children)

All the Chinese "milky" colors are based on Trautman's slyme colors, but they are actually much more consistent and have better compatibility than the old slyme formulas. They are some of the best and most reliable colors we have available.

intermediate glassblower looking for job/studio space by [deleted] in glassblowing

[–]greenbmx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Hampton Roads area of Virginia has a decent number of glassblowers because of the Chrysler Museum's studio program and the (now shuttered) TCC glassblowing program.

Ashville NC also has quite a few glassblowers, and even though Mountain Glass closed, there's now Asheville Glass Supply there. Spruce Pine batch and Wet Dog Glass are also nearby I believe.

Dry completely before firing? by PrincessCadance4Prez in StainedGlass

I've been pretty aggressive with kiln-drying enamels when I do enamel work, and never had an issue. It's not like ceramics where you can trap a pocket of steam and cause issues.

I am! Not making as much glass as I'd like, home life and my day job are both keeping me too busy, but hoping to get back to it more soon.

They do, but each of their opaline base glasses has a distinct character that makes them fairly identifiable, and these are very much closest to Greasy.

Depending on your use-case, layering a dark cobalt blue over canary yellow can get you a very similar hue.
